Echoes of Scripture in the Gospels

5.0 out of 5 stars Profoundly insightful, 23 Jan. 2017

I snapped this up after hearing NT Wright recommend it in an interview. While many bibles have cross references, instead Hays' digs into the multi-level scriptural allusions used by the gospel writers. He treats each gospel in turn (starting with Mark) and asks three questions of each;
1. How does the gospel writer use scripture to relate the story and role of Israel.
2. How do they use scripture to describe Jesus - who he is and his mission.
3. How do they use scripture to describe the church and it's role.
Unavoidably the distinct gets a bit blurry in places.

Most often, the key is found in taking a few crucial greek words or phrases, or a partially quoted or paraphrased scripture from the gospel, and finding the parallel term in the Septuagint text.. and then reading around that.

For example, in Mark 12 Jesus tells the story of the wicked tenants. In verse 6 it says "He had still one other, a beloved son". Hays argues that the first century Jewish hearer is meant to here the echo of Genesis 22 where God says to Abraham .. "Take your son, your BELOVED son", and obviously Psalm 2 which was understood to be a Messianic psalm... thereby making the parable not just a story, but ISRAEL's own story, and also prophetically pointing to Jesus' coming crucifixion.

All in all, this felt like opening a door. It demolishes the idea that the gospels were composed late and far from Israel. The entire fabric of all four gospels is woven from Jewish scripture, recapitulated and transformed by the writers, yes, but from completely Jewish stock.

Summary comments:
1. It's relatively scholastic, not a popular summary. Greek words are used and a good familiarity with the bible is assumed.
2. This is the first edition and it does need a detailed editorial overhaul. The preface explains why this is so. If you buy it - be sympathetic.
3. It is not theological or historical, the entire work is focused on the LITERARY aims and devices of the gospel authors. To be fair I can't really argue with that, but as an evangelical believer, I found this frustrating. I personally believe that the reason of the gospel's were written in this way is at least substantially because Jesus himself taught the disciples to see scripture this way. Each gospel author adopted this hermeneutic in their own way, for their immediate purpose, but the fact they seem to share so many of the same texts surely suggests (historically speaking), that there was a shared source for the approach.

We read this at the dinner table, to the utter joy of the children. It's hilarious, as well as smutty and disgusting in the best possible way.

We used a pack to seal the rooms during a loft conversion. Recommended for any major rennovation. You need some good tape to secure them, - we used gaffer tape in the end as we're going to redo the hallway and didn't mind about the paint coming off. The little velcro stickers that keep the rolled up door don't work particularly well.

5.0 out of 5 stars best sport head phone on the market..., 4 Jun. 2012

Initially I was annoyed that they've decommissioned the PMX80, and put the price up... but these are even better. They're more comfortable, as stable to wear as ever and.. a new feature.. the cable splits in two sections so when I'm running with my iPod in an armband I only need the short piece - no long cable flapping about or needing special run-proof coiling.

I'm no audiophile but even I wouldn't rate these as the greatest sounding headphone - but that's not what they're aiming for... they're just by far the best sports headphones on the market, for the price and then some.

1.0 out of 5 stars Drone, drone, drone..., 28 Sept. 2010
This review is from: The Courage Of Others (Audio CD)
I absolutely loathe this album. I've tried to listen to it half a dozen times because word of mouth hype like this is rarely wrong... but every time I get about halfway through, realise that I'm quietly furious with something, realise it's this bloody music that's been moaning and droning on incessantly for half an hour and have to stop it immediately.

It's by no means a view I expect others to share and I know I'm probably wrong, but to me this sounds like the hold music for a particularly Puritan funeral parlour. These lads need some happy pills.

These are just the best. Rock solid, durable, lightweight. Sound quality is not superb, but for any kind of workout they're all you need.

1. The cable is slightly shorter than other headphones - which is great as there's less tangle and tidying to do.
2. After an hour or more, sweat can block the ear buds...

But even so, they're fantastic.

Mine tend to last about 6months, but I thrash them on a daily basis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliance. Everything to love about football., 19 Mar. 2009
I would like to see all the UK's cliche-spouting, brain-deadening, parochial and myopic TV pundits suspended until they've read, and can pass a written test on this book. There's more sense in a few pages than I've ever heard from Alan Hansen. Anyone who ever again says "You just need to pick the best 11 players... ". There should be an official injunction against Kevin Keegan ever becoming manager at another club.

The best part is, it looks like a dry technical textbook.. but it's actually madly passionate about the game, the characters, the colour, the place of football in wider-culture and the national identity.

His analysis of Croatia v England during the qualifiers for Euro08 is deeply cathartic; explaining specifically and simply how we were so effectively carved up. I was also amazed by the evidence showing that England's football character hasn't changed in 100-odd years - from the start the game here was about passion and workrate over technique and skill (this is only just starting to change). And by his explanation of how the game spread around the world via trade routes. And by his observation that Real Madrid are habitually the whipping boys of whichever club is the new force in Europe (Benfica, Ajax, AC Milan..) - so hello Liverpool. I was surprised by the heat and violence of the Argentine game, and the bewildering decay of Uruguay and Hungary. And Roy Hodgson, what a bloke!

The one thing I thought is missing from the book is an in-depth analysis of Wenger at Arsenal and the shake-up he's given the UK game, though now I've reached the end I suspect he would say that, as beautiful as they can be to watch, there's nothing new tactically (they're basically a traditional 4-4-2..)

Oh and some technical insight into the great Lampard-Gerrard paradox.

A fantastically gripping thriller, brilliantly acted, finely nuanced, as socially relevant today as ever. It keeps you guessing all the way to the very final scene.
Highly recommended.
