3.0 out of 5 stars The first pleasant detective story?, 10 July 2014

I can't help liking the character of Daisy Dalrymple. She is the epitome of an idealised image i have of the past which essentially involves dressing nicely for dinner and being unfailingly polite. However, the actual plots of all the books are a long way from challenging or even gripping.

4.0 out of 5 stars a great adventure, 31 May 2014

Flash man, the narrator of this novel, is such a rogue he nearly becomes likeable. Very funny, this nonetheless portrays the failings of the British army and administration just when it was supposed to be great.

An exploration into the darkness of human nature. This historical novel explores human greed, cruelty and the need for revenge. The poetic descriptions of the English countryside are beautiful.

A wonderful, intelligent novel. The characters are exceptionally well-drawn. Tightly focused on the lives of twin boys born in India, one of whom moves to study in America, the other of which remains in India, this goes well beyond a simple exploration of cultural identity, exploring political idealism, terrorism, academia, feminism and love and the list continues.

A Tale for the Time Being
A Tale for the Time Being

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book, 27 April 2014

This is an intelligent yet heartfelt novel. The two main characters become entwined In each others' lives when Ruth, a novelist struggling to adapt to her new environment in the wilds of Canada and the death of her mother, finds the diary of Nao, a Japanese girl struggling to cope with Japanese life after growing up in California. This is too intelligent a novel to become sentimental and, on the contrary, challenges consistently through its intellectual scope. However it remains heartfelt and moving too. What doesn't this novel explore? Be prepared to explore concepts of time, post-modern concepts of characters, identity, cultural transition, environmental change, WW2, Japanese anarchists, Japanese pop culture and Buddhist meditation, but with plot and description that never lets it get dry.

3.0 out of 5 stars fun, 11 April 2014

This is typical YA fiction and enjoyable for what it is: all the girls are pretty and nice; the boys are committed to having long term girlfriends; there's drama; there's loads of betrayal; action abounds. there are plenty of strong female characters. It is a fun read but certainly not deep, and says nothing interesting or new. This is a shame as the idea has the potential to be much more being at least a little original.

These stories are subtle while evoking an array of characters, individual and fascinating. When the image or shape of a character stays with you long after you've read it, you know you have read so etching special.

Whilst the common trend in fantasy is for the anti-hero, I enjoy a tale with a true noble soul as it's hero. This is well-written, cleverly plotted fantasy.

I will not pretend that I could not predict the outcome of Mma's cases, but that is not the point of this novel. It may be a detective novel, but really it is about people. Thus is a heartwarming novel with characters you cannot help but love.

A great adventure, with some thought provoking ideas. The narrator was at times a little frustrating, but overall, a good read.
