2.0 out of 5 stars Analogue source?, 14 Sept. 2011
Mine is the Region B blu-ray sold in NZ/Aus and it is an inferior blu-ray with artifacts indicating an analogue source. I doubt very much it is a different printing to that sold in the U.K.

Avoid, it is better than some dvds, possibly...

4.0 out of 5 stars Mystery/Thriller - powerful suspense, 14 Sept. 2011
I was wowed by this film when I got it out a couple of years ago. The film take place aboard a single carriage of a late night train heading to Freemantle. The carriage heightens the sense of claustrophobia and indicates this might be a story intended for, or originally played out on the stage...

The train guards are on strike and a young woman finds herself threatened by two yahoos.

I won't give anything away about what happens on the train suffice to say there are some vary intense scenes and some surprises and the film is ultimately a human drama.

Some I have recommended this to have not rated it as highly as I have but if you are interested in Australian cinema I highly recommend it! Avoid reading spoilers - just rent/buy it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Might have been fantastic..., 5 Jun. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Sharktopus [DVD] [2010] (DVD)
When reviewing a film like Sharktopus is helps readers to understand one's expectations and tastes - I enjoy exploitation and cheese for what it is - Toxic Avenger, Class of Nukem High etc all rate very highly with me!

From other reviews I had high hopes of a silly, tongue-in-cheek bloody riot.

Unfortunately, like Piranha 3D, the ironic potential of the script was lost on the filmmakers...

Sadly, I felt the acting and direction let down a film that would have been fantastic if more vision had been employed.

The script was genuinely funny at times. Sharktopus pops up and eats people everytime someone denies the possibility of such a creature (a clever, fun device). The choppy narrative just jumps to completely unrelated characters merely to have them gobbled (again this CAN be knowing). The hero wears his shirt open through the whole film (it's rediculous - so why not film if from silly angles, have the actor do his best Bruce Campbell). But no..

There are many more examples of genre silliness that might have been exploited to produce a VERY funny parody of such horror movies. But the actors think they acting in, and the director thinks he is directing... a serious film!

Clearly the whole thing was shot in as few day as possible with no real effort to light the scenes because it's Mexico but for all it's balmy weather it might as well be Scotland or Wales.

At least Eric Roberts got a free lunch out of it or maybe some bad sex...

2.0 out of 5 stars Over-rated and unoriginal, 13 July 2010
The film is basically following the model established with films by the likes of Linklater and the much mater Scanner Darkly. Film conversations or interviews and, in this case, cheaply animate over the video template provided.

So the technical aspect shouldn't be a wow factor given this film did it years after it was done by others. To me the computer produced 'cel' animation looks incredibly cheap unless a lot of time is spent making it not look like a shape being morphed or moved into another shape. Which this film usually does... peoples mouths look like 2D shapes manipulated to match the source film rather than frames of individual animation and parts of a coherewnt whole, a persons face for example. - eg it is pretty, but CHEAP.

The story is the only thing that might have been interesting or novel in the film. Unfortunately the 'revelation', if you will, should come as no suprise to anyone with even a passing aquaintence with the subject matter, which is Isreal's involvement in particular acts of genocide that took place in Palestinian refugee camps.

The 'twist' and 'revelation' which this film took a very, very long time to produce was neither particularly insightful or clever. These are merely the facts of events that took place.

I guess if you can't have an intelligent conversation about world events and know next to nothing about Israel/Palestine and have an abundance of patience for films that are overly long and self absorbed this film might seem incredibly rich...

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than a kick in the face, 10 July 2010
This review is from: Creepshow 2 [DVD] [1987] (DVD)
The first Creepshow was greatstuff and better than the Twilight Zone movie (which I also watched again recently) but this second in the series presents much less bang for your buck and is a pale imitation of its predecessor.

Not terrible and I'm glad to have seen it but one for rental rather than adding to home libraries in my opinion.

4.0 out of 5 stars My favourite Seagal, 30 Nov. 2009
This review is from: Fire Down Below [DVD] [1997] (DVD)
Great film. Many or most of his films feature dull spells of terrible acting and mindless plot as the viewer waits for the next spasm of violence, this film features love interest and a villian that actually add to the films charm..! And where so many of Seagal's films feel facistic and excessive with their violence the treatment the nasty polluters get seems balanced and deserved.

Yes, Seagal is hokey and he should have shot his fashion advisor (or hired one!) but that's all part of the charm.

4/5 only a few scenes suffered in an otherwise very enjoyable action romp.
