Very much in vogue again - But this is not your average comeback album. Faith No More infamously sneer at fame and celebrity.

Not as glossy as FNM of yesteryear - The instruments are all quite raw. Patton's voice still soars - A little more mature with some gravelly parts reminiscent of Tom Waits. Jon Hudson's guitar sound remains natural with few effects, but his arrangements are carefully considered and delivered with gusto. Bordin and Gould are still the beating heart of FNM - Despite their advanced years they have the same energy that powered 'Introduce Yourself' in the 80s. Roddy adds more natural piano sounds this time and contributes confident lead vocals on one song.

Some songs really shine - Matador is theatrical and epic. Cone of Shame has all the snarling cynicism of Tomahawk at their best. Superhero is crunchy thrash nostalgia. The opening song is unexpectedly calm in the same way that Mr Bungle's Sweet Charity opens California. The last song is an emotional curtain call rather than an explosive climax - Like the closing of Angel Dust or King For a Day. It's been a touching reunion so why not sing "back from the dead" over some happy chords? A fitting juxtaposition and a lovely way to end things.

But my review is largely irrelevant. If you like Faith No More you will certainly get a kick out of hearing these weirdos recording together after an 18 year hiatus. The CD has not left my car stereo for 2 weeks. As for those who are struggling with another change of musical direction - I imagine Faith No More will be happy to annoy people again - It's not like they were ever predictable. Great to have them back.

My favourite Cramps release. Recorded live at the Peppermint Lounge.

Tons of energy. Lux Interior is a mental frontman. Punk drums. Chainsaw guitars. They even play the title song from a Russ Meyer film.

It's The Cramps on a good day. What's not to like?

3.0 out of 5 stars It's Primus Jim but not as we know it, 22 Oct. 2014

Primus & The Chocolate Factory may be a challenging customer but it has some good moments. The idea is so good on paper, it never quite lives up to expectations - After all, this is the classic line-up recording together for the first time in 19 years, and performing songs from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The concept is almost too good to match the hype.

The production is carefully considered. The arrangements add percussion and strings to the mix, creating a sound reminiscent of Frank Zappa. Les Claypool uses his various basses to create some great noises. Tim Alexander and Larry Lalonde take a minimalistic approach to their playing and the band concentrate on building solid arrangements opposed to displays of technical wizardry.

These are dark renditions of the original songs that mirror the sinister elements of the film. Although 'Cheer Up Charlie' is admittedly quite dreadful, 'Pure Imagination' has pleasing percussion and careful attention to dynamics. Larry's distinctive guitar riff underpins the whole piece with eerie psychedelia. Another song worthy of mention is the Eastern-sounding waltz of 'I Want It Now'. The initial rendition of the Oompah song is effective, but as the theme resurfaces on four separate occasions the novelty wears off. The album provides some epic Pink Floyd atmospherics in 'Farwell Wonkites'.

Those who are new to Primus would be advised to start with a more immediate release - Frizzle Fry maybe? Fans of the band may find a few fillers on the album. It's not exactly their best work but there is some sweet ear candy to be found here.

If you have found these batteries you can happily wave goodbye to the crazy prices of supermarket chains and massive electrical retailers. Don't give them any more of your hard earned cash. These Panasonic Lithium batteries do exactly the same job for a fraction of the cost. I have been buying these CRV3s on Amazon for years. Nothing bad to say about them.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best strings I have used for standard tuning, 14 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am a working musician and I use several electric guitars in different tunings. Owing to a busy work schedule my guitars take a lot of punishment. I get through a lot of strings.

When using guitars in regular EADGBE tuning, I found that strings would break frequently and sustain was limited when using lighter gauge sets. Consequently I have tried almost every recognised brand of strings to resolve these issues and Ernie Ball Hybrids have proved to be the best in terms of lifespan and sound quality.

The customized 9-46 gauges are perfect. The thicker strings have sustain and durability, whilst the lighter gauge strings allow for plenty of noodling and dexterity in lead playing - The unwound strings are light enough to ensure you don't get blisters. This happy combination means your guitar will be reliable whether you are playing violent punk or subtle jazz standards. The strings remain nice and bright for a good few weeks of average use.

When experimenting with other makes I was surprised to learn that higher priced strings often had shorter lifespans. Do not be fooled by celebrity endorsements or bold claims of scientific innovation. In standard tuning, these affordable Ernie Ball Hybrids function at a higher level to everything else I have tried.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bit of a disappointment, 24 May 2014
I have always found Alan Partridge very amusing on TV. He is probably Steve Coogan's finest creation.

Unfortunately the hilarity of Alan Partridge has not translated to the big screen. Surprisingly Declan Lowney's slick direction is at odds with the world of Partridge and you realise the success of the TV show owed much to the understated nature of things. In the TV series, Alan was juxtaposed by his mundane surroundings and pedestrian colleagues - This made his unswerving ability to say the wrong the thing at the wrong time genuinely hilarious. In this film he is surrounded by zany people in a high budget production. This means Partridge's lack of self-awareness often ceases to be a comedy vehicle. There is no juxtaposition because the other characters are often more unpredictable and socially inept than Alan. It is an unfortunate oversight coupled with a choice of wardrobe and hairstyle that make Alan appear younger than his years. He is often neither socially blemished nor cheesy and that is what made him so funny.

This is not to say the film is completely bereft of humour. Steve Coogan is a great performer and there are a handful of genuinely good moments, but this film should have been painfully funny where it is mildly amusing. I am a bit gutted.

Autobiography (Penguin Modern Classics)
Autobiography (Penguin Modern Classics)
by Morrissey
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.48

4.0 out of 5 stars He compares Glastonbury to "Gdansk trenches of war-torn Poland". But it's strangely compelling, 8 April 2014
Morrissey's Autobiography is at turns fascinating, hilarious, disjointed, self indulgent, entertaining, rubbish and brilliant. The ending may be lacklustre with it's relentless self-aggrandising descriptions of musical performances but there are moments where Morrissey's scathing delivery borders on genius. Even if you dislike the man, you will find many bizarre musings and odd anecdotes to keep you reading. The following quote from the book is real. I kid you not.

(p448): "Not for the first time I wrap a dying pelican in large bath towels and carry it to the hotel reception. They are not remotely interested."

Tiger Music GACAPO2 Capo for Guitar - Chrome
Tiger Music GACAPO2 Capo for Guitar - Chrome

5.0 out of 5 stars High quality. Pleasing design. Great value for money, 13 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am a working guitarist and needed a capo to play some unusual selections at a wedding ceremony.

There is no messing about with screws, straps or clips. Holding the device like a gun, you simply press the trigger down and move it over the desired place on the guitar neck. When you let go of the trigger, the capo automatically locks onto the fretboard with just the right amount of pressure - The process is smooth and can be done mid-way through a song. It has a strong grip and I have no problems with tuning or performance. The capo has rubber fittings on all surfaces that come into contact with your guitar - This ensures that your neck avoids scratching or damage. It's a solid design and pleasing to use. The Tiger Universal Capo is now a permanent fixture in my arsenal of guitar gadgets. At just over five pounds it has been good value for money.

EDIT: I have noticed other reviews on this page warning of flaws in this capo that I do not recognise. To clarify - I have used this capo on electric and acoustic guitars with no issues over several years. Discussion suggests there is another company producing a low quality knock-off. Make sure your device is a Tiger Universal and not an imposter.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amateurish disaster. Highly entertaining, 4 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Plan 9 From Outer Space is poorly crafted. The acting is atrocious. The special effects are pathetic. The script is beyond catastrophic. The film's biggest star Bela Lugosi died before production started and they replaced him with a double wearing a cape over his face - The real Bela only appears briefly in prerecorded footage. It's all deadpan with actors seemingly oblivious to the film's shortcomings. Flawed dialogue is delivered without irony and there are no winks to the camera.

However these things work to the film's advantage. The inconsistencies and mistakes are funny and very watchable, whether it is bad acting or a rubbish flying saucer on a string, Plan 9 is really entertaining - You will be amazed how many mistakes you will spot in every scene and this accidental feature in the film will keep you watching until the end. Plan 9 is loved by many and I value my copy as much as anything by Stanley Kubrick.

This edition of Plan 9 also contains the rather splendid 2 hour documentary 'Flying Saucers Over Hollywood: The Plan 9 Companion' featuring interviews with Vampira, Joe Dante, Conrad Brooks, Sam Raimi and many more.
