1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly written sequence of anecdotes to pass as a book, 20 April 2014
This book is one for the saddos who want a string of anecdotes. Obviously written by an anorak. If you want a sequence of poorly written anecdotes then this is for you. The writing is the let down here not the subject. The band are great and no mistake. This author is more than likely the typically perceived Marillion fan that lets the band down so much and continues to drag behind them. The band are worth so much more than their perception.

I agree with another reviewer here that this publication could have been so much more. It would serve anyone here well to find a copy of Steve Hogarths diaries. There you will find a collection of anecdotes worthy of publication unlike this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars The message is clear, 3 Jan. 2014
This review is from: THE WHITE BIRD (Paperback)
A critical analysis is not necessary. This book speaks for itself. It needs no introduction and will call you from the outset. What is worthy of review is the aftermath it indents on your thoughts.

Upon reading this meditation you are left with a series of understandings and reflections that echo upon the personal and the global. Maybe one day those who are choosing to create a tumultuous earth through blind malevolence will reflect upon these words as a mantra of "i told you so" and realise the parable in the message.

If these words, and those of like minded authors, were heeded on a global scale and understood, then maybe (and it's sadly a small "maybe") we could move toward harnessing and sustaining our future through non pollutive and cold fusion thermodynamic harnessing. But the corporate elect don't want that.

Anyone with any rational sensibility observing our current unhealthy global attitude and disposable nature will already be saying "one day it will be too late".

Until then, any notion of change will be governed unless disclosure of free energy and it's implication toward the possibility of exopolitical strategy will declare a sense of global emergency and hopeful resolve.

We bury our waste for our children to inherit,
and while this is all done apparently for our own current benefit, it is they who will say "we never asked for any of this".
Just look at the film Into Eternity to discount this observation. It stands as testament just like this book.

In this global age of mass communication where everyone talks at the same time maybe this one lone voice of The White Bird will rise like the Phoenix in mythology to allow the meditation to take effect. I am sure it is the authors underlying principle.

5.0 out of 5 stars an accidental hearing lead me to this!!!, 11 Nov. 2013
This review is from: Back To Land (Audio CD)
it is seldom i write reviews about anything on this site and yet i want to about this release.
i heard it by wandering into the oldest record shop in the world (cardiff) as it was playing. liked what i heard and subsequently bought a copy from the great staff there. i love the happy accidents like this.

this album is very polished and apparently written and recorded in just 11 days. the immediate sound reminded me of the drones of the band Suicide, the space of Hawkwind and a whole host of experimental psychedelia thrown in for the mix.

the album is relatively short with only 8 songs/sounds. nevertheless those 8 will make an impact. immediate listening will draw you to repeat play.

it pays to visit your local independent record shop i have found out. i have missed doing such a thing as there is no choice in Swansea. really! naming no names. this is why i have chosen to find things far cheaper online than be ripped off anymore.

so all in all this was such a lucky find for me. i would highly recommend you searching for selected songs via a search engine check, take a listen and get yourself a copy. to own the physical copy and its artwork is well worth it.

i hope this review will prompt people to check this album out.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Album That Deserves To Be Recognised More Than It Has. Time Will Allow A Wider Audience., 25 Feb. 2012
This review is from: Elizium [VINYL] (Vinyl)
To see that this album has been re-issued on vinyl has made me want to write a review. You've been drawn to read this that i write here and it is strongly hoped that you will take it from me that you would do well to purchase a copy either on vinyl or CD. I bought this the day it came out hours before i went to see them play the first night of the Elizium tour in Bristol. I did not get a chance to hear it before seeing them play it live and that was one experience i will never forget. Had i the time to play the LP then i would have missed the gig! Simple as that.

From the opening build up and the segues that follow, this recording is more than mere music on vinyl and bits of plastic. I have had the good fortune to introduce many people to this particular album and none have been disappointed. It truly is something not many words can describe adequately. Here is something that only experience can offer.

A lot of people are 'put off' by the vocals of Carl McCoy apparently. I do realise that his singing comes from a place that not many can achieve and this makes the synergie of voice and music even more in harmony rather than discord.

The majority of this album is a soundtrack to a place that a lot of us often wonder about i am sure. Some call it heaven, you get the picture!

The albums closing sound is the epic Wail Of Sumer/And There Will Your Heart Be Also. I would not begin to do this an injustice by attempting to describe, it would be ignorant of me. You should hear this. I do hope it will take you to places that i have thought about when hearing the sound. There is a painting by the artist John Martin titled The Plains Of Heaven. To see this painting in front of you in the gallery whilst hearing the sound of Wail Of Sumer/And There Will Your Heart Be Also is something i hope someone reading this will get to experience also. They belong together.

However you obtain this album then i wish you an experience that you too may find impossible to write about like i have failed to do so here. It truly is an experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars 16 years later and a beautiful album is crafted, it's good he is back, 11 May 2011
This review is from: catholic (Audio CD)
this is my first ever review for amazon and what a great way to start one by reviewing a release by gavin friday. if you have never heard the recordings of gavin friday then why not go out and buy this wonderful album. each song is beautifully crafted and this man's vocals just carry you through each song with the thought left in your head that you wish they would never end. elements of cocteau twins and sigur ros are in here. but it is predominantly mr friday's stamp for sure!
this is a work of maturity for sure. his previous release, Shag Tobacco, way back in 1995 was a truly wonderful album and one that i have constantly played ever since. if you feel flush with cash and looking for albums that obviously will stand the test of time then just buy them. i cannot recommend these highly enough.
why gavin friday has not released anything of quantity since 1995 has been a loss to music fans in that time. but now i strongly hope he will have great success with this new release and record a whole lot more...........and gavin if you ever read this, know that your music and craftsmanship of lyricism isn't wasted on those who find is strongly hoped you will tour this album and you continue to record for many years to come. sláinte mhaith to you and the land you come from.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gruff comes up with another blinder, 27 Jan. 2011
Gruff Rhys has done it again! another fantastic recording from what will no doubt appear alongside some more dead good tunes on his forthcoming album Hotel Shampoo. if you've not heard this song then track it down and purchase yourself a copy as it is well worth the cash. enjoy!
