5.0 out of 5 stars Who says sequels are never as good as the original?, 28 Mar. 2002
This review is from: American Pie 2 [DVD] [2001] (DVD)
There are very few films that I have seen where I didn't actually want the film to end - I personally found this film incredibly funny. It's one of those films where you can leave your brain at home and just enjoy the crudeness that it offers.
There's no real storyline other than that of the main characters seeking to either improve their sex lives or just looking for the next available opportunity! The original cast members are back from the first film - none have been replaced or dropped which adds to the film's watchability.
Since the film basically revolves around sex and growing up, you can have an educated guess at the kind of gags and jokes that are going to be used in the film - which is probably why it appeals to such a vast audience!
Great fun if you have a couple of hours to spare!

5.0 out of 5 stars A work of genius!, 11 Mar. 2002
Anyone who has said that they guessed the ending to Fight Club is talking complete rubbish - not just because it twists the storyline into a 180 degree turn, but because it is so completely unpredictable.
Fight Club is in a class of its own. It develops a psychological boundary that is both impressive and, frankly, quite brilliant. Not only does it provoke modern society, but also screams out a message that is seemingly determined to grab the viewer by the scruff of the neck shouting "grow up!"
The film centres around a character called Jack, an insomniac who becomes extremely bored of his life of routine and predictability. That is, until he meets Tyler Durden - a man with a very surreal and twisted outlook on life who introduces Jack to his philosophy on life, with both funny and shocking results.
Fight Club is a film that deliberately laughs in the face of seriousness and as a result, is a film you'll either hate or love. Personally, my outlook on the film was definitely the latter!

5.0 out of 5 stars Typical Manga - but compared to Akira?, 11 Mar. 2002
Urotsukidoji can be summed up in three words - brilliant, shocking and imaginative. The great thing about this DVD is the two films on one disc.
The film(s) centres around the plot that the world is actually three worlds. Amano - a "Man-Beast" whos quest it is to seek out the Chojin, a 'Superfiend' who will unite the three worlds into a realm of peace - battles against the evil Monster World to gain knowledge about the Chojin and the "Land of Peace". But he soon realises that both the Chojin and the future are not as he has been lead to believe.
The film is very dark and features either a scene of sex or violence in almost every scene! But even so, both films are very cleverly made with some very impressive visuals and effects. Not to be missed if you are a big Manga / Anime fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Masterpiece returns to DVD!, 11 Mar. 2002
This review is from: Akira [DVD] (DVD)
Akira is now over ten years old, but its ground-breaking cel animation visuals are still absolutely astonishing. The storyline is complicated to say the least and requires several viewing occasions to fully understand and appreciate!
The film centres around two main characters, Tetsuo and Kaneda when their motorcycle gang encounters a military operation to re-capture an escaped experimental "human". But in doing so they capture Tetsuo and begin to conduct experiments on him - to discover that he has a similar psychic ability to that of "Akira". Tetsuo, in a state of rage, then uses his newly founded powers to seek out revenge and to find "Akira".
This was the film that made the world stand up and take notice of Anime - and quite rightly so. Still a classic after over a decade!

5.0 out of 5 stars Imaginative, original and brilliant!, 24 Aug. 2000
Despite the fact that it's nearly 18 years old, this film still remains one of my favourite films of all time. The puppets are wonderfully created, from the grotesque Skeksis to the peaceful Mystics; each one beautifully detailed. From the captivating storyline to the brilliantly atmospheric settings, this will always remain a fantasy film classic! Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very clever and intelligent thriller., 24 Aug. 2000

Initially I wasn't too sure what to expect from this, however, I wasn't disappointed after watching it for the first time. Like "Akira", at first the storyline does become difficult to follow at times. But the neat twist at the end of the film makes this as one of the most gripping stories to come out of the Manga collection. Very clever, intelligent - and superbly animated.
