5.0 out of 5 stars Dark Genius, 4 Aug. 2013

Yet another dark, intense classic from Mika Vainio - as much industrial electronica or classical minimalism as ambient. Vainio's on a roll at the moment, and this bleak, compelling opus is another masterpiece.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ultra Avant Garde, 3 Aug. 2013
This review is from: Disapointment-Hateruma (Audio CD)
One of Ryuichi Sakamoto's earliest recordings, dating from 1975, this is a must-have for any devotee. But be warned this is ultra avant garde noise as music - all dissonance and atonality (but with a sneaky hint at minimalism, with some compelling repetition) - it's a million miles from his mid-period romanticism (but not that far from later experimental work).

Me, I loved every minute of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another classic from Beltrami, 3 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Two-time Oscar nominee Marco Beltrami is and remains the most exciting young (everything's relative, he's in his 40s now) composer at work in Hollywood. This is another classic, with all the Beltrami hallmarks - dark, terse, haunting and utterly compelling writing, with his deft blending of synths and orchestra an example to lesser composers.

A must for Beltrami devotees, a great intro for newbies, this is great film scoring.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Vainio's Finest, 1 Aug. 2013

This review is from: Kilo (Audio CD)
As well as being one of Vaino's finest releases from an illustrious career, this is also one his most accessible. Industrial electronica meets classical minimmalism to create a dark, heady cocktail of compelling, singular music.

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive classic, 25 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Handmaid's Tale (Audio CD)
This Japanese version of the disc is the one to go for, with the tracks broken down to the individual 27, as opposed to the two long suites of the western version.

A classic soundtrack from the underrated genius of Ryuichi Sakamoto, one of his best, all pounding synths and mournful strings, film scoring at its very finest.

The Third Bullet: A Bob Lee Swagger Novel
The Third Bullet: A Bob Lee Swagger Novel

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Hunter's best, 18 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Hunter's finest novel in some time harks back thematically and dramatically to his early classic, 'Point of Impact', and ranks among the finest Kennedy assassination novels, such as DeLillo's 'Libra'. Not as action-packed as some Hunter tomes, but redolent with tension and the emotionally-laden pathos not seen since 'Black Light'.

Hunter is and remains the genius savant of intelligent action-thrillers - and a great writer to-boot.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for Zornists, 24 Jun. 2013

This review is from: Weird Little Boy (Audio CD)
An essential Zorn release, this features the compelling aggression a la Naked City, and must rate among the eclectic composer's finest releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Monkish Minimalism, 24 Jun. 2013
Beautiful, lush and compelling, this is reminiscent of the vocal Minimalism of Meredith Monk, and is not only one of the finest of the Book of Angels recordings, but among Zorm's most striking and rewarding works.

The Finish: The Killing of Osama Bin Laden
The Finish: The Killing of Osama Bin Laden
by Mark Bowden

2.0 out of 5 stars An Embarrassment, 6 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Is this the same Mark Bowden who wrote the exemplary classic 'Black Hawk Down', because this book is just plain embarrassing. Given its short length and title I was expecting a second-by-second account of the raid that killed bin Laden, (backed up by an exploration of the manhunt that led to the shoot-out) a la 'Black Hawk...'. Instead he skims over the CIA hunt and the raid itself is relegated to a few scant pages (none based on first hand interviews with the SEAL operators, instead lifted from 'Mark Owen's' definitive 'No Easy Day') - what we do get is an exhaustive account of the politicking in Washington. And guess who the hero of the narrative is? Not the CIA operatives or JSOC operators, no it is the saintly genius hard-man Barak Obabma. Bush is ridiculed while Obama is lionised - only under his auspices was the raid and hit possible. Is he kidding?

Most of this is drawn from face-to-face interviews with Obama and his officials. This is all bunk. OBL was tracked and killed not because of Obama, but in spite of him.

Also little details are wrong, such as basic military nomencalture - Delta Force is never referred to as such but as simply Delta, Seal Team Six is referred to by its personnel as DEVGRU (see 'No Easy Day') - this plus other basic errors add to an account that is just not just ill-informed, but dangerously distorted.

Avoid thia book at all costs, unless it is read as satire. Bowden should be ashamed.

Zorn's 50th birthday yielded a goldmine of material, and this is among the best. Spiky, scary and compelling - no one can touch Zorn's genius.
