The Chrysalids (Penguin Modern Classics)
The Chrysalids (Penguin Modern Classics)
Price: £4.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Wyndham's best, 15 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Wyndham's best. The story is well plotted, it moves at a steady pace and the main character is well drawn, at least for sci fi. However the main story is the society. Almost believable. It is of its time, with the fear of total atomic war being the reason for the story.

The Complete Mars Trilogy: Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars
The Complete Mars Trilogy: Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars
Price: £12.49

3.0 out of 5 stars Not engrossing, 9 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've had the books some nine months and have only just finished Red Mars. I find it difficult to sympathise with the main characters and am not bothered by what happens to them. The story is strong and moves well and the premise is clever and unusual, probably unique in scifi. But it just didn't ring by bell.

Shame: I so wanted to enjoy the three books.

4.0 out of 5 stars A variation in quality but well worth the money, 9 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These are a mixed bag. The Dark Room was bottom of the pile, with Scold's Bridle a bit better. Echo was intriguing to watch but not what I would call a classic. That leaves Ice House and Sculptress. These two were excellent and worth the asking price on their own.

I'm not a massive fan of Walters as I feel she sometimes underrates her audience. I guessed what had happened to what was in the Ice House in the first five minutes, but luckily that was of little consequence to the purpose of the story.

Sculptress was without criticism. Quirk's performance was sublime. I sympathised with her.

Two great stories, one pretty good, and the other two irritatingly poor. But excellent value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars I would have been happy to pay for this book, 9 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'd have been happy if I'd paid £5 for this book, but then would only have given it 4 stars.

It was very interesting, fascinating in fact.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use but feels flimsy, 9 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It does exactly what it said it would do. It was easy to set up and easy to use. I back up my data weekly and this has lasted for a few months without problems.

Downsides: the design is uninspired and looks are not a positive feature, and the casing is a little flimsy. One hopes the mechanism is stronger.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not genre defining but pretty good, 9 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Fatal Boarding (Kindle Edition)
The story moves along at a pace. It is not genre defining but not bad. A previous reviewer suggested that it could do with editing, and as an ex-proofreader this grated with me. It is not as bad as some though.

It lost a point as it is not a book you might read over a couple of days. I got a little bored a couple of times but went back to it, and I'm glad I did.

I bought his second book, so this one must be pretty good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Recommended, 9 May 2016

A reasonable price for a reasonable product. It is smart enough and is showing no signs of wear after some months. Good for its price. Recommended.

Price: £5.22

3.0 out of 5 stars Good enough as a grounding in canals and their history, 9 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It does what it says: explains the how and why of canals. It is a brief overview with poor images.

DCI Banks: The first three novels

Price: £9.02

4.0 out of 5 stars They are showing their age and Robinson's inexperience, 9 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It is remarkable how Robinson has improved over the years. These, his first three in the Banks never ending saga, are still entertaining, interesting and fairly well plotted, but not as good as many of the latter ones. I think that's why I found them a little dissatisfying and only awarded four stars when I took the price into consideration.

A pleasant enough waste of afternoons in the garden.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't expect it to change your life, 9 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Oddly enough, I think you would need to have studied the bible, or at least Genesis, to get the best from this amusing deconstruction. It becomes a little repetitious and is not the sort of book you would read at one sitting.

Don't buy it expecting an atheist's argument for non-belief in a god. It does little more than poke fun at the stories I was taught as a kid and expected to believe. Mind you, my Sunday school teacher didn't believe in them either, and she demonstrated this by her exasperation at questions.

This book is light, light and mere entertainment. It is not life changing.
