4.0 out of 5 stars A Strange Mixture Of Obscure And Popular, 10 Oct. 2013

I suppose it would always be the songs that you enjoy that would bring this book to anyone's attention. The pop songs wouldn't necessarily be the reason, or the more obscure songs either, maybe the mood more than anything. Sink a mint julep, gather round the 88's, and go-Dad!

4.0 out of 5 stars Creative Acts In Themselves, 10 Oct. 2013

Sharp minds honed on the faults of those who are already laying themselves open creatively. The criticisms seem to be creative acts in themselves. All part of that beautiful human faculty of creativity, and usually hilariously and inventively funny.

Otis Spann here explicates a demonic experience. Puts you THERE, while making the experience entirely enjoyable. Robert Johnson. As poetic, but not as stark. No comparisons though. All equal in poets' heaven.

This is one cool hat. One of the cheapest on offer at Amazon UK, and of the two I bought with it , definitely the most serviceable, robust, well made, biggest (actually the only one that fits what I consider to be my normal sized head! friends heads too). Tres Oasis style to my mind, but if you prefer a flower child look, this hat accommodates that very nicely.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Creative Artist, 25 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Whatever the moral issues of Michael Jackson's life, this collection is testimony to his genius as a creative artist. Somewhat limited by the marketplace and stigmatisation by limiting, judgemental spirits, many attempts were made to malign and discredit him and his work, but pretty much to no avail right up to the end of his life, if only in reference to his work, his creative genius. Not the full five stars because of record company and corporate packaging rather than any omission on Michael's part.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost As Prodigious A Work As Those Of The Bard Himself., 25 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Without once alluding to the suggestion that Shakespeare was more than one person, the scholastic depth of this book alone seems to give credence to that theory. So thorough, so perfectly explicatory of plot, sources, context and so on, this book opens up Shakespeare like nothing else I have encountered, including documentaries, biographies, annotated works and modernised versions of the plays. The synopses of the plays are more enjoyable for me than the plays themselves, which could easily put me in the category of philistine ignoramus, but the crucial ingredient that makes Shakespeare Shakespeare, the poetry, will always make the dramatic works in their original form central, and that would be in living performance rather than read in a book. This may be stating the obvious, but to me they have always seemed impossibly dense, mannered and abstruse in all other formats, especially if one is looking for their existential, inspirational source. Everything else, sources in other plays, character exposition and relationship, ancient and modern staging and context of the plays etc.etc. is covered with such loving detail that the creative genius of the Shakespeare himself and the experience of the theatrical presentation of his work is almost rendered superfluous to the information presented in this prodigious work. Of course Shakespeare created the work, so that could be considered an absurd statement, but if the work is rendered relevant, accessible, and more importantly, enjoyable to those who seek to understand or simply see what the fuss is about, without trivialising or demeaning the power and genius of the plays, then this book is crucially important. In addition to exposition of theatre staging, societal purpose and context in Shakespeare's day, his social milieu and peers, landmark modern productions, film and radio versions are reviewed, recorded excerpts and more, the book proceeds and expands in loving appreciation.
I believe at the time of writing this review, the book is out of print. A crime.

The Name Book: Over 10,000 Names--Their Meanings, Origins, and Spiritual Significance
The Name Book: Over 10,000 Names--Their Meanings, Origins, and Spiritual Significance
Price: £4.27

5.0 out of 5 stars Get Your Existential Bearings, 25 Aug. 2013

Names are so much more than a surface identification. This book digs a lot deeper than that, while being brief and to the point, thus making meaning an enjoyable and graspable concept for each name. There is a Judeo-Christian orientation, and biblical allusions and contexts are provided for each name with multiple phonetic resonances provided, which are flexible, so if you're looking for a particular name, the book engages creative faculties by giving a pointer to the grammatical root of the name, without being overtly scientific or systematic in approach. A good, inspiring energy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Reliable New Age Guru, 14 April 2013

This review is from: Far Journeys (Paperback)
Robert A. Monroe was very much a pioneer in bringing a rational explanation of out of body experiences to the skeptical scientific community, being a scientist himself, and running a successful big business based on very firm rational, materialistic principles. It's for this reason that he found it very disorientating when he had spontaneous out of body experiences in the mid to late 1950's. Setting up a research organisation, this book is the warmer, more approachable result of his thorough investigative method, with mostly direct case histories, which I think appeal to most people much mor readily than what an external, so called objective observer of those experiences may report on, as is the tone of Journeys Out Of The Body, being his own reportage for the most part, and being in contradiction to his warmth and inspirational qualities as a speaker. Still there's something attractive about someone so conscious of needing proof, and providing it, to someone such as myself, who prefers, usually, something of an imaginative approach to hyper-reality. In other words, the weirder it sounds, the more likely it is to me. This book is that un-Blakeian middle ground of straightforward reports of un-straightforward experience. Fascinating.

A great compilation, and classy sound, but the people at Chess should know that people are hungry for the complete masters of Bo, Chuck, Muddy, Wolf and all the great prolific R'n'B masters. They could make lots of money, so what's stopping them?

Nobody plays or composes like Peter Kater. Here he is stripped of melodic accompaniment, a worthy, inspiring and inspired study for pianists of all ages, and transcending by a long way the anodyne "new age" formulas. Above all, beautiful music to listen to.
