5.0 out of 5 stars They get better, every time you listen.., 25 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this CD following a reawakening of my interest in the Samll Face's Music. This CD is full of good songs by them; 'Don't Burst my Bubble', for a start. It is mostly Immediate Label output, but not exclusively so. I'd recommend this CD to anyone who is interested in the music of the Small Faces, or, for that matter, good, popular, music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mr. Pennimans singing, so it can't be that..., 18 July 2011
This review is from: Rock And Roll Roots (Audio CD)
This CD should be placed with the 'Vee-Jay years' CD and the 'Explosive Little Richard': his Okeh Recordings. I found his performances on here to be perfectly, well, Little Richard. In fact, there are some indications of his coming soul recordings on these two CDs, within this compilation. Agreed, the CD is wrongly titled, but that's just an indication of the lack of knowledge, of the compiler/production team (hi-ho).

I bought this CD because I wanted a recording of 'Sun ain't gonna shine...'. At the price I paid, the CD is worth every penny, and more. These recordings have atmosphere, and the vocal delivery is superb; a lovely bit of (mostly) sixties nostalgia...

5.0 out of 5 stars this CD's got that 'it' quality about it, 30 Mar. 2011

I came across this CD by accident, and listened to the Sound Samples and that was it! This CD has got so many tracks that have a certain mood/atmosphere about them; They bring to mind the country, and listening to it, you might drift away in that Brazilian Sunshine....brilliant!

5.0 out of 5 stars ...and it's still in the groove, 11 Feb. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I recall the first volume of 'A Cellarfull of Motown'; and here we are, with number four, still delighting we Motown Fans. The sheer volume (no pun intended!) of songs produced by the studio is mind-boggling. This compilation is competitively priced, and a worthy addition to any Northern/Rare Soul Fans CD library...

5.0 out of 5 stars Seductive, Southern Soul, 1 Feb. 2011

This is a fine compilation, I came across by accident; competitively priced, it showcases, excellently, the nature of Southern Soul: those wonderful, beautifully-orchestrated, seductive, Southern Soul tones. A wonderful purchase for any fan of this genre.

2.0 out of 5 stars maybe track 8, but apart from that..., 3 Nov. 2010
Having bought other CDs by J., I was interested to see what he came up with. 'To travel hopefully is better than to arrive' just about sums it up. Whilst I realise that all artists have to progress, this CD was a great disappointment; track 8 was like the old J., but the rest, well. The rock style guitar was particularly incongruous, in addition to the limp nature of the songs, generally. The tacky CD cover design sums it all up.

5.0 out of 5 stars what more can a Motown fan wish for?, 21 Sept. 2010

Great voice, great production, some interesting alternative versions of classic songs; what more can a Motown fan wish for?

5.0 out of 5 stars Like righteous soul and 'down and dirty', funk bass?, 20 Sept. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Like righteous soul and 'down and dirty', funk bass? Then this CD is for you. Working with James Brown meant that any work by Lynne Collins was going to be good, and there's lots of it here. If I have to select a stand-out track, I'd go for `Backstabbers', where she duets with JB; a CD well worth the money!
