5.0 out of 5 stars Benchmark Beethoven, 12 Oct. 2012
How can you begin to review a disc of this stature? These are benchmark recordings of the late quartets, made in 1989 and still sounding fresh and inventive over 20 years later. A legendary quartet playing the greatest music - what more could you ask for?

5.0 out of 5 stars Superlative playing, 12 Oct. 2012
This review is from: French Piano Trios (Audio CD)
The Florestan Trio understand this music perfectly, and give a beautiful performance on this superb disc. Each player is a virtuoso in their own right, and they combine with warmth and sympathy to bring these works to life. The Ravel in particular is a wonderful performance, bringing out all the shades of light and dark that make this work so original and extraordinary. A disc to cherish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Enescu, 12 Oct. 2012
This is remarkable music given a passionate and committed performance by the Schubert Ensemble. Enescu's music is still largely unknown, but anyone wanting to explore it could not find a better place to start than with this disc. Sample the heady, dreamlike slow movement of the second quartet or the lyrical, rhapsodic opening of the first quartet. It might take a few listens to really get into the language, but once you do it will haunt you. This is chamber music of the highest quality, and once you've discovered it you'll wonder how you ever lived without. The Schubert Ensemble are ideal advocates, rising to the considerable technical challenges with aplomb, allowing the music to breath where it needs to and letting rip in all the right places.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Class Dvorak, 12 Oct. 2012
There are many recordings of Dvorak's great quintet but this new release from the excellent Schubert Ensemble stands out for its superlative playing and eloquent charm. This Ensemble has clearly lived with these pieces for many years and their in-depth knowledge of both works shines through. The lesser known but equally passionate piano quartet is a welcome coupling. Overall, a wonderful recording I am looking forward to listening to again and again.
