Every now and then, a book comes along that transforms your understanding of the subject matter.

In his latest book: 'Lincoln Cathedral, The Biography of a Great Building', Jonathan Foyle unravels a deeply complex building which has been imbibed with layers of meaning over its near thousand year existence.

From the varied and often conflicting messages within the building, he has provided a Marian paradigm which elevates our understanding of the cathedral.

Life is given to the dusty carved stones through the overarching concept that the buildings dedication to the Virgin Mary drives its genius loci, and through this he enables us to get into the minds of the people that built, worked and worshipped in this magnificent edifice.

What is equally satisfying is his perceptive observation of architectural grammar combined with his deep understanding of the semantics of ecclesiastical architecture.

A complete history of one of the most pivotal religious buildings in England. Jonathan gives us an articulate in depth analysis of the history of Canterbury Cathedral with a strong architectural theme running through it. As well as his vast knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject, Jonathan's skill lies in articulating complex themes in simple and descriptive terms that draw you into the wonderfully organic growth of the building in physical, historical and political importance. Complemented by a new set of wonderful photographs and illustrations - this book is a must read for fans of architecture, archaeology, heritage and England's past.

Bought this book some time ago and I have already read it twice. Fascinating and intriguing secrets to be had behind our front doors. Each chapter is more intriguing than the last and gives our humble homes real personality.
