4.0 out of 5 stars A well written addition to the genre, 4 Mar. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
While 'World War Z' and 'Day by Day' still rank as my favourite apocalyptic zombie novels this is a strong also ran.

Numerous character groups, phases and individuals make for an interesting story that continues to engage the reader. Great character development.
Houston area is ravaged by a flood. Toxic reactions create a new virus and the undead rise. Government seal off millions in a quarantine zone with no gates and keep them penned in. But for how long?

If you like zombie movies this is well worth a read and will keep you turning the pages.

Regardless of whether you're a gamer or not check out the CGI trailer for 'Dead Island', brilliantly done.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting story, 4 Mar. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
My expectations were higher than some of the cheap pulp purchases I've bought recently for the Kindle, this was a full price purchase.

While Infected is not a classic and I've no desire to read it again it was a nice idea, well researched and strcutured effectively to draw the reader into the various character streams.

Hero of the story was Perry, the infected ex football player, all other characters felt a little like fillers in comparison and perhaps could have done with a little more development, but that aside thoroughly enjoyed reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top quality stuff again, 27 Feb. 2011
While the character who plays Spartacus fights illness the producers have created a 6 episode prequel mini series.

Despite its short length Gods of the Arena does an outstanding job of explaining many of the pre stories of Season 1 while injecting all the manoeuvring for favour, violence and sex that marked the series out as so exceptional.

The acting, characterisation, plot and dialogue has all the skill and conviction of a Shakespearian production. Graphically impressive the photography and direction capture the essence of the era beautifully.

As good as all the components are this is a series about gladiators and the real stars are the fight scenes - choreographed, performed and CGI'd into a heavily stylised brutal reality they are fully immersive and leave little to the imagination

Buy it, and if you haven't seen season 1 yet, buy that first to appreciate the character stories in full.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lord of the Flies featuring adults, written by a 14 year old., 26 Feb. 2011

The plot skipped and the dialogue seemed out of place, as were some of the characters reactions to horrific circumstances. Not sure was editor was up to when was meant to be editing.

Was a bargain buy for the Kindle. Was ok. Forgettable addition to the genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice twist on an ancient genre, 26 Feb. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Being a cheap buy for the new kindle I wasn't expecting too much but this story was fresh enough to keep reading a look forward to a sequel.

A nice twist on the vampire story instilling a rigid hierarchical discipline via 'The Council'. the enforcers, Lost Ones and a neat explanation of vampires aversion to a crucifix fitting in very well with the plot.
Skillful description of the era, painted a nice picture, easy to imagine the setting and characters.

Worth buying, better than most at this price bracket.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality router/modem, 17 Feb. 2011
Admit that I hesitated before buying this based on the reviews. I use O2 for my broadband and was nervous about spending hours on frustrating helplines. My existing free Thomson II had lost its wireless function though and I needed something. Although I've a decent grasp of these things I'm not very technical by current standards and many of the reviews just overwhelmed with technical desciptions I just didn't recognise.

I needn't have worried.

Firstly I rang O2 Broadband (0800 230 0202 - follow options for technical team) explained what I was doing. They asked for the brand I was swopping to and read out all the settings I would need. 5 mins, couldn't have been more helpful.

Next, on opening the box I found a sheet with workaround instructions for o2 customers in case they experienced a problem recognising thier ISP during setup. I did and the workaround worked perfectly.

Took perhaps 30 minutes to setup from start to finish.
Firmware was loaded already but an upgrade was required. Was quick and trouble free.

PS3 download test suggests 3.9 mbps which sounds ok but perhaps not quite as fast as I was expecting. Was some lag on iplayer via wireless on PS3

Advice summary
- Get your account details ready in advance
- Follow the instructions carefully

Follow these 2 pieces of advice and most of the problems encountered over the last 12 months by reviewers have probably been fixed.

Early days but first impressions are good.

Look good and now have the confidence that router will handle the growing mass of wireless objects demanding its attention.

Update 27/2: No problems still. Powering through all demands on it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just doesn't satisfy, 15 Feb. 2011
This review is from: The Tourist [DVD] (DVD)
Agree with other reviews - Venice is beautifully presented and Jolie has never looked more stunning.

She plays her part well as the love lorn enigma trying to meet up with her soul mate. Problem is her soulmate has swindled billions from a mobster (Steven Berkoff) who very keen to get his money back and kill him, while HMRC are also after him for taxes on the stolen money while it has sat in a bank account within thier juristiction (or something). Consequently she's being watched like a hawk, very clumsily. The central premise of the movie is how the soulmates can manufacture a reunion without getting caught.

Depp & Jolie, as two of the biggest current movie stars, are a dream pairing for the marketing of the film, unfortunately the chemistry doesn't extend to the film itself.
I just felt Depp was miscast in this role as the maths teacher unwittingly recruited as a decoy by Jolie. I'm a big fan but his role here didn't convince.

The conversations were ponderous, understated, laden with gravitas but ultimately felt artificial. The scenes between Depp and Jolie had the feel of a stage play throughout. There were some attempts at humour but never strong enough to know wether they were meant to be funny or not. On the whole it seemed not.

Not serious enough to be a thriller, not a romance, not a comedy - I guess a light drama might cover it.

There is a little bit of twisting and turning in the plot but somehow the ultimate story is obvious from almost the start of the movie.

I wanted to like it and it certainly wasn't bad but ultimately it didn't satisfy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Proper popcorn movie, 14 Feb. 2011
This review is from: Unstoppable [DVD] (DVD)
Huge frieght train is accidentaly released unmanned when brakes are turned off during a routine move and so begins the movie...

A great example of how to make a very simple story engaging for a full movie duration, the action ramps up nicely with the speed of the train and the increasingly frantic efforts to stop it before it careers off track to catastrophic effect.

Introduction of principle characters family members adds a little padding but very hard to recall a Mr Washington movie that failed to satisfy. His presence even made the ridiculous Pelham 123 watchable. He excels again in unstoppable.

Good action movie, highly dramatised but recommended.
