We eat too much sugar and this makes us fat. So stop eating sugar (and carbs). This is basically the message of the book pasdded out over far too many pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for anyone returning to french, 24 July 2009
If, like me, you studied french at school, but it was a long time ago..then this is an excellent book for reconnecting with the language and jogging the memory of half-remembered grammaire and conversational phrases. The first part(Julie and Marc in Paris)manages to revise basic language and vocabulary in a useful and practical way without feeling forced (most of the time anyway) and the remaining two parts with short chapters of history and culture are interesting and written clearly and simply without condescenion. I highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Had me from the first page: evocative and powerfully written, 23 July 2009
Amazingly believeable - this book will transport you to the village of Eyam in 1666 and hold you there until the last page. The heroine, Anna Frith, is written with honesty and is our eyes as destruction and death are wrought all around her. The book delves further though - into the role of religion, belief, values, the exercise of power and will - and what these can do for good and for bad. On the first reading I did feel let down by the ending feeling almost as if my trust had been betrayed, but on re-reading I can see why it was written so - and eventually it offers some hope, balancing the book which is otherwise short on lightness. All in all a fantastic read - especially as swine flu adds a contempory question: would the quarantine happen today?

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheds new light on a classic book, 13 Jan. 2009
This adaptation is the BBC at its best. Outstanding ensemble cast, with Ellie Kendrick living the part as Anne Frank. Most people already know the book, or at least the story, so this could be limiting, but I liked how the adaptation often portrayed other's perceptions of Anne, as well as hers of them. At times you almost don't have that much sympathy for Anne - she shown as selfish, self-centered and harshly critical of others: a typical teenager! What I especially liked was that you could see the development of a more mature Anne through the last episode, who has started to come out of the teenager into the adult. All of the cast are excellent - especially Tamsin Greig as Mrs Frank. The end when it comes is the no more easy to watch, for all that you know the what is coming. All in all superb stuff and highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars 2007 diary, 2 Dec. 2007
I also found my 2007 diary with (the soft cover) fell apart pretty quickly hence the three stars - but having seen the 2008 diary in the shops I notice that they have gone back to a much more durable hard cover, so I think 2008 version will last, as, in fairness 2005 and 2006 did...
