Shores of Barbary (The Duty and Destiny Series, Book 12)
Shores of Barbary (The Duty and Destiny Series, Book 12)
Price: £3.79

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best of series., 4 Sept. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not as engrossing as previous episodes. There is a lack of attachment between lead character and reader. One gains the impression Sir Frederick can do no wrong, make no mistakes and failure is an unknown commodity. He lacks soul. The story line is good and moves along nicely......too nicely. Its not a page turner.

4.0 out of 5 stars A dark series., 9 Aug. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A dark tale. Needle's Georgian Navy is truly a place of horror which is relentless. Nevertheless, it is quite captivating and it appears to have been terminated after book three, leaving it in an unfinished suspended state. ( Having read the Bentley series previously, it too ended inconclusively. Not a particularly endearing trait this author seems follow.) ( Both series were penned some time ago.)

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful series and a pleasure to read the Dickensian style, 24 July 2016

A wonderful series and a pleasure to read the Dickensian style! Dreading the end of series. The only bit of downside is the drawn out local politics.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a find!, 1 Jun. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
What a find! Excellent storyline and intriguing style of writing. Again, measured against Patrick O'Brian, this writer has a very individual charm. I recommend the book and possibly the series most highly. I will not need a sample for the next episode!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the greatest series, I'm afraid, 19 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not the greatest series, I'm afraid. It would appear the author also became disinterested in the subject, the apparent endless domestic issues, the boring romance and the constant strife with the Naval hierarchy. I have questioned Mr Donachie's knowledge of Georgian Navy architecture before, and indeed, his knowledge of sails and sailing. The questions remain. Not for the serious Naval fundi!!

2.0 out of 5 stars A big yawn., 3 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The never ending and very tedious saga of Mr Pearce and his colourless mistress has me nodding off within minutes, so , yes this book has it's upside.Have read the entire series and what started out as a good idea has long passed its sell by date. Mr Donachie has scant knowledge of marine architecture. His cutters have ships wheels when they carried tillers .His frigates have a raised poop, his brigs have lower gun decks and that's just some of his basic errors? These books are far cry from Patrick O'Brien so don't get your hopes up.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the most gripping., 16 April 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Slow and bordering on tedious in parts. The drawn out intrigue centered on Capt. Barclay has reached its sale by date. When will it end?

Peregrine (The Fighting Anthonys Book 5)
Peregrine (The Fighting Anthonys Book 5)
Price: £4.91

4.0 out of 5 stars Recommended., 8 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very enjoyable series. Occasionally spoilt by American terminology such as that dreadful word "gotten" which one would not find in Patrick OBrian or C.S Forrester. The west coast of the US. is the setting.....again.......and the number of characters increases to confuse the reader. However, the storyline moves along at a snappy pace, the actions are well constructed and the history thoroughly researched. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good read., 21 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Ensign Royal (Kindle Edition)
A good read and interesting from a historical point of view. I enjoyed the series, starting with A Gentleman Captain and this is therefore a step back in the saga before our hero went to sea. Thus its a tad disappointing in that we don't set out on a Naval adventure!

4.0 out of 5 stars ... Naval fiction writers and this is one of the better works from his pen, 7 Sept. 2014

Sean Thomas Russell has long been a member of elite Naval fiction writers and this is one of the better works from his pen. A good story well told.
