4.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing, 8 Nov. 2009

This review is from: Mum & Dad [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
Mum and Dad could be viewed as being "sick" and indeed its subject matter is very disturbing and graphically told. It tells the story of a family living on a housing estate near Heathrow airport who are taking young foreign immigrants who work at the airport home to torture and kill.

Alternatively, because of the way the story is told and the familiarity of the environment to many, it could be viewed as a harrowing portrayal of despair that has descended into deep mental illness; and on the whole this is where I feel it leans. Rather than going for the out and out torture of the likes of Hostel and SAW, it attacks the senses pyscholically to leave a very uncomfortable to watch film which you feel could actually happen.

This is a great British horror film and recommended viewing, though definitely not for the feint hearted.

4.0 out of 5 stars Poignant Drama, 8 Nov. 2009

This review is from: Tuck Everlasting [DVD] (DVD)
Tuck Everlasting, adapted from the book by Natalie Babbitt, tells the tale of Winnie (Alexis Bledel), a girl growing up at the start of the first World War. Rebelling from the strict constrictions imposed by her parents she runs away into the nearby woods where she discovers a family living hidden there and falls in love with their youngest son (Jonathan Jackson). However all is not as it seems as she discovers their secret and their world comes tubling down as a stranger (Ben Kingsly) intent on exploting their secret also finds them.

It is a beatifully told and poignant drama about life and living it to the full. Very much worth watching.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Conclusion of the Original Sharpe's, 8 Nov. 2009
Sharpe's Justice

Sharpe's Justice is one of the more interesting episodes, not necessarily in terms of the overall storyline but because it is set after the end of the Peninsular War with Napoleon in exile all the soldiers returned to England looking to resume their lives in peace time. It shows the social struggle going on inside the class structure at that time; the beginning of the industrial revolution.

It is also an interesting episode in terms of Sharpe himself as he returns to his roots in Yorkshire and you learn about his upbringing.

Sharpe's Waterloo

Sharpe's Waterloo is the final episode of the original stories and the final one (so far at least, as the new ones in India have the books based before the Peninsular War) based on the books. It was always going to be extremely difficult to film this episode because of the scale of the battle, so it concentrates more on the personal aspects of the battle with Sharpe being posted under the Prince Of Orange (Paul Bettany) and meeting up with his old comrades. It still retains much of the feel of the battle however by carefully selecting pockets of the fighting to portray.

It serves very much as a conclusion to the series with the storylines of Jane / Rossendale and Harris / Hagman being neatly finshed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Romantic Comedy, 4 Nov. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Prete-Moie Ta Main is an hilarious French romantic comedy. Alain Chabat plays Luis, a a very happy and content single man who is pampered by his mother and sisters until one day they decide it is time for him to get married and start lining up women for him.

To counter this he employs Emma (Charlotte Gainsbourg), his best friends sister to pretend that they are dating. The comedy all comes from the situations they find themselves in as they meet for various functions and get deeper into trouble with the pretence.

3.0 out of 5 stars Funny Spy Spoof, 4 Nov. 2009
This review is from: Get Smart [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
Get Smart is a spy spoof very much in the vein of an Americanised Johnny English. Steve Carrell plays Agent 86, a desk agent who is thrown into the field when headquarters is attacked by KAOS, an evil terrorist organisation. Anne Hathaway partners him as Agent 99 as they try to save the world.

It is a fun to watch and well put together comedy and never taxes the brain too hard, though it ultimately feels a little repetitive as Steve Carrell effectively plays the same character as all his previous films. The other actors, especially Alan Arkin and Bill Murray look like they had a great time playing their parts; and Anne Hathaway puts in yet another great performance showing how diverse her acting talents are.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sharpe's Mission / Sharpe's Revenge, 4 Nov. 2009
Sharpe's Mission:

Sharpe's Mission is the eleventh in the series and sees Sharpe, now a Major married at the end of the Peninsula War with Wellington's army pushing up into France.

It is the usual Boy's Own stuff with adventure, betrayal, battles and Sharpe saving the day.

Sharpe's Revenge:

Sharpe's Revenge, the twelth in the series, sees the final battle of the Peninsular War at Toulouse and then peace come to Europe as Napoleon abdicates to Elba.

Following the battle, Ducos plays his final trick against Sharpe getting him accused of stealing Napoleon's treasure. This leads Sharpe to go on the run to clear his name. Meanwhile, his wife Jane leaves him along with all his money and returns to London.

As with all the other films, the story is well told though obviously on a tight budget.

Recommended for all fans of the books or series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Season, 3 Nov. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Following on from the first two seasons of Gilmore Girls, this boxset contains all 22 episodes of season three. It sees Rory in her final year graduating from Chilton, looking for a university place and going through the trials of dating Jess (Milo Ventimiglia). Lorelai continues with her troubled love live and finally looks set to open her own hotel. Her parents continue to manipulate their lives even more.

If you enjoyed the first two seasons then this builds and improves on those so you will certainly enjoy this. Highly recommended.
