4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Prehistoric Romp, 8 Sept. 2009
10,000 BC provides an enjoyable romp through pre-history very much inspired by a combination of Stargate and Jean M Auel's Earth Children novels.

It tells the story of the journey of the man to rescue his love who has been kidnapped and taken as a slave to work on the building of the Great Pyramids. Along the way he befriends a sabre tooth tiger, fights raptors and becomes leader of a small army of tribes who have all lost members to the slavers.

It tramples all over history to make the story fun so as long as you take it in the vein it is meant it provides a good evening's entertainment.

The extras on this two disc version run to over two hours and include an alternate ending, deleted scenes and documentaries on the story design and historical elements.

This review is from: The Reader [DVD] (DVD)
The Reader, adapted from the novel by Bernhard Schlink is one of the most powerful and thought provoking films that I can ever remember seeing. It poses questions both in it's story and in the discussions among the law students that have been taboo for the past seventy years. While never attempting to make an excuse for the attrocities committed in the concentration camps it does ask whether the right people were punished afterwards or whether it was more a case of finding anybody to shift the blame to.

Kate Winslett was rightly rewarded for her portrayal of Hanna, a former prison camp guard who through her pride takes the brunt of the blame for a massacre. Ralph Fiennes gives another sad and splendid performance as her former lover.

4.0 out of 5 stars The End's Not Near, It's Here, 8 Sept. 2009
This box set presents the sixteen episodes of the fourth and final season of The OC. For me, after watching and loving the first three seasons, this one felt a little strange as it is almost like watching a different show. Gone is the light hearted humour to be replaced in the initial episodes by a much darker experience. This is to be expected as the characters grieve and move past the death of Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton).

Season four was always going to be a challenge as they had to juggle the diverging lives of the kids once they left school. On the whole I think it works but at times it feels forced and the humour for me loses a lot of its sting. For example Summer's college friend Che just doesn't work and the dream sequences just seem a little daft.

If you have watched and enjoyed the first three seasons, then you'll want to buy this and will almost certainly enjoy it - it's just very different. If you haven't seen the first three then go and watch those first as this season doesn't show what made The OC the great show that it was.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warning - This Film Will Reduce You to Tears..., 7 Sept. 2009

... even if you are man not usually susceptible to such things (and even if you are male).

This is a very slow paced love story told in flash back as James Garner reads from the notebook of the title to his wife in a nursing home as she battles dementia.

It is beautifully filmed and acted. The box touts it as "The most romantic movie since Titanic". I would say it well passes Titanic.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Peak Of The OC, 5 Sept. 2009
The OC Season 3 is my favourite of the the four seasons. The characters are now fully developed and have matured to the point where the storylines are more complex and interesting. The writers have also taken them in directions which are unexpected and may even be unpopular with fans. I liked this because it meant that each episode is always fresh and intereting to watch.

I was a little disappointed with the season finale this time which (if there can be anybody left now who doesn't know) culminates with the death of Marissa Cooper (played by Mischa Barton). There seemed to be too little lead up and it felt very rushed. I understand they wanted a dramatic ending and a lead into season four but it just felt a little wrong wit the way they took it. She could just have easily left to join her dad.

Again, highly recommended viewing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tiring of New Ideas?, 1 Sept. 2009
This review is from: Transporter 3 [DVD] (DVD)
The first two Transporter films were great action films with big set pieces, plenty of storyline and fun to watch. Now we come to Transporter 3; most of the action is gone, there is little storyline and Frank's rules seem to have slipped by the wayside as they try to introduce love into his life.

If you have watched and enjoyed the first two films then you will certainly want to see this film too but otherwise it is very missable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Second Season, 1 Sept. 2009

After the tear jerking finale to season one, season two wastes no time at getting started with even more angst and trouble for the characters. This season the grown ups get more of the storylines with affairs, business worries, alchoholism, divorce, attemtped murder and death.

Not wanting to be out done, the kids get love triangles, a love child, drug dealing to name but a few.

This season also introduces the Bait Shop, a bar that holds band nights which allows the show to bring in up and coming bands to try to widen the audience.

The series finale is even better than the first.

5.0 out of 5 stars California, 31 Aug. 2009
This review is from: California (MP3 Download)
This EP contains two mixes of the theme tune to The OC (neither of which are the actual one used). The demo version being the closer of the two. The second track, Always on My Mind, is also very good in a similar catchy vein to the titular track. The other two tracks, while still pretty good were more for filling from my point of view.

If you are coming to this because you have enjoyed California, this EP provides a good introduction to the band's other works before heading into their albums.

Highly recommended.

It's A Boy Girl Thing [DVD] [2006]
It's A Boy Girl Thing [DVD] [2006]
Dvd ~ Samaire Armstrong

3.0 out of 5 stars Well Acted But Weak Storyline, 31 Aug. 2009
This is the story of a boy and girl who are next door neighbours but don't get along because of her mother's view of social status. Then one day on a school trip they argue next to a statue of an Aztec god and are body swapped. The rest of the story is them being forced to get to know each other in order to turn it back around again. The story is pretty shallow and weak and has all been seen before in many other movies which have done it a lot better. Having said that the pace is quick, the story fun and it leaves you happy at the end which I guess is the aim of it.

The acting by Samaire Armstrong (of OC fame) and Kevin Zegers is very good and they make the best of the story they are given to play with which saves the movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Unexpected Joy, 29 Aug. 2009
Watching through the box sets of The OC, it quickly became evident that the creators had paid a great deal of attention to the music that was accompanying the episodes, so the mixes that they have produced to go with it soon caught my attention. They have done just as good a job with this, the first of 6 albums that were put out.

It contains the theme tune, California by Phantom Planet along with eleven other very good tracks by various indie bands with highlights (for me at least) of Just A Ride and Dice.

The album works very well on its own and as an introduction to the various artists if you haven't heard of them before. Highly recommended.
