3.0 out of 5 stars Unfinished...?, 17 Jun. 2013

Though I have admired some of Wharton's work I found this too overtly, and unsuccessfully, Jamesian. The characters are trivial and their development inconsistent. There is a great deal of repetition and pointless complication arises from her search for subtlety. This edition, which I bought because it was the cheapest, has flaws which in the end made me wonder if the novel itself had been completed or if the final chapters, as reproduced here, were experiments at an ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars What the Illiad is really about, 17 Jun. 2013

This review is from: Memorial (Paperback)
This long poem is a response to Homer's Illiad which makes clear that any war poem is really a death poem. It reveals The Illiad as a poem which memorializes all the fallen in that long war at Troy and demonstrates that The Illiad was never a poem which glorified war, whatever generation of classics teachers have said.

The book discusses important ethical issues around the development of drugs by showing the impact such development can have on the lives of indigenous people and on the lives of research scientists. It offers beautifully written descriptions of the Amazon rain forest and insightful examinations of the characters.

Meetings With Remarkable Asian Women
Meetings With Remarkable Asian Women
Price: £2.98

5.0 out of 5 stars Meetings with Remarkable Asian Women, 18 Sept. 2012
Chris Ashton has interviewed nine Asian women who have survived painful and difficult circumstances to become valuable members of their society. They have overcome extreme suffering at the hands of others and emerged into generous lives without bitterness. Ashton allows the women to speak in their own words and this makes their stories immediate, moving and inspirational. Their stories are also informative about the history and culture of their Southeast Asian countries and especially about the experience of WWII in the Pacific and the transition from colonialism to independence. Their stories demonstrate that women can be educated, successful, independent and influential contributors to society without adopting the harsh, ruthless materialist values of western capitalism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Western, 17 April 2012

This is a perfect example of the western genre. It takes the central idea of the West, that the heroic men who opened the West - in this case the gunfighters - are always moving on, displaced by the people -farmers, settlers - they serve. The gunfighter always tragically knows his day is over, his West is always already past. If you're a fan of Westerns you'll see how influential this beautifully made film has been.
