New Mens Nubuck Leather Velcro Strap Sports Walking Open Toe Sandals UK Size 6-12, Nigel Brown UK 8

1.0 out of 5 stars Fine at first, but they didn't last long. The seller was unsympathetic., 9 Oct. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
When this was received I found that one of the straps started from under my foot and, as I have little in the way of an arch, at first it was uncomfortable, but I soon got used to it and the sandals were fine. I expected that the reason why they would eventually wear out would be the Velcro - my previous pair (a different make) lasted three years until the Velcro failed to hold, which is why I bought these new ones. However, after only three months' usage, mainly in the house, there was a problem with the "buckle" or eyelet that the left front strap went through before being doubled back and fastened: the plastic buckle split so that the strap wouldn't stay attached. That made the left one (and hence the right one, too) unwearable, as it flapped around like a swimmer's flipper. I have tried getting in touch with the seller, Impressionz, but so far without success. I don't think that three months is nearly long enough for the life of a pair of sandals.
LATER: Submitted a claim for a refund, but Impressionz' view is that the claim comes more than a month after the sandals' receipt, and so the claim is inadmissible. Seems a bit tough, considering they were mainly worn as slippers for the majority of the time I had them. I certainly shan't be dealing with this firm again.

Treasure Houses Of Britain Chatsworth [DVD] [NTSC]

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the Chatsworth that I know., 19 May 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This was bought as a present for a German friend, because we live on Chatsworth's doorstep, but it was never sent because it is so poor. For a start there is virtually no mention of the superb gardens, and the story inside the house isn't much better. The camera man had evidently forgotten his wide-angle lens as we only get to see parts of some of the state rooms rather than the whole room. Mention is made of the wonderful ceiling in the Painted Hall, but it is seconds later that the camera pans upwards to see it, and even then only shows a little of it. There is - and this I find almost unbelievable - no mention whatever of the utterly fabulous, and very famous, trompe l'oeil painting of a violin hanging behind a "secret" door, which is so amazingly lifelike that it's hard to believe that it's a painting even when standing only a few feet away. It's so famous that Chatsworth sells postcards of it, but evidently it has been deemed unworthy of a mention. Of all the mind-blowing artwork and artefacts available what gets shown? A silver teapot (don't quote me on this, it was some silver knick-knack, but by then I'd almost lost the will to live), simply because the Duke likes it. Where were the researchers before the programme was made?? Why was there no mention of, for instance, the Chinese ceramic tulip vases, each about four feet high, very rare and worth a king's ransom on their own (and which you walked past in previous years with no special mention, within a couple of feet) - and this is just an example. Oh Selina, we expect better from you. 4 out of 10: could do better!

5.0 out of 5 stars Vivid enactment of the story., 12 Mar. 2017

I wanted a new version of this to play to my 3-year old grandson. I already had a version by Ralph Richardson but it was a little "stuffy" (his voice of the bad-tempered Old Grandad, for instance, simply wasn't convincing) and so plumped for this version by the late and much lamented Willie Rushton. Willie adds just a few words here and there to make the traditional translation more understandable, and his reading of the text is very vivid. Suffice it to say that my grandson absolutely loves it, and bored his nursery teachers about it for days.

I'm only just dipping my toe into the waters of opera, so to speak, and so am not qualified to review the musicality of this production: I bought it simply because it was an inexpensive version to try out, and it was conducted by Claudio Abbado. What I was surprised by, because it wasn't mentioned in the product description, is that this is a LIVE version, with applause between the tracks. Some people may like that - I'm not so keen, myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars What to do, and WHY., 31 Dec. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
My EOS 760D came with a disc which contained a manual that was hundreds of pages long, all of which needed to be read from the computer screen. This book, which incidentally has much better illustrations than the manual, is of similar length, but it explains things so much better. Not only does it explain what to do and how to do it, but it explains why and when you might want to consider doing it. In the menus that set up a great variety of possible ways of using the camera, the implications of each decision are explained (if you take photos of THIS, then you need to set THAT, but beware that it might affect the OTHER), much of which is far from obvious. I loved this book!

Purchasers of the 750D note: the illustrations are all of the 760D.

"The Gramophone" magazine reckons that this is the best version. Well, it might have been, if you could only hear half of the cast. This is, apparently, a live recording from Glyndebourne and, like live performances sometimes, you simply can't hear clearly any of the performers at the back of the stage. Obviously the soloists are recorded well, but all the others simply fade into the background. And as the soloists appear separated by interminable periods of crowd chatter (Gershwin cut over 40 minutes from the stage show, all of which are lovingly restored in this version) that makes for a lot of time to wonder what to have for dinner.

1.0 out of 5 stars A very expensive revamp., 31 Dec. 2016
This review is from: The Man And His guitar (Audio CD)
I don't hate the music, just this CD! Because John Williams has been around for so long, and started at such a young age, his earliest recordings are now out of copyright. Anyone can now make and sell CDs of his early work without shelling out royalties. This is just one such CD: check out "The Art of John Williams", for instance, or "John Williams: Guitar Magician", or any number of similar CDs. This version has the same content as most of the others - less than some - so save twenty quid and buy one of the cheaper titles instead.

Barrios: Confesion

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb musicianship., 6 Oct. 2016
This review is from: Barrios: Confesion (Audio CD)
Another reviewer has already listed the contents of this CD. As a classical guitarist myself - unfortunately not to this standard! - I can tell you that the very least you can say about Ramirez is that he is competent. The quality of his playing is actually superb. In particular I would mention the first track, "La Catedral", which represents in three movements the reaction of a poor peasant when he visits a cathedral, by far the biggest building he will ever have entered, for the first time. The first movement is the sound of the cathedral bells heard from afar, while the second is his sense of wonder as he enters. In the third movement he hears the organ being played, and Ramirez adds an effect that I have not heard from anyone else (and I own six different versions besides this one), namely the diminishing sound of the echo of the notes as they reverberate round the building. It's only a small touch, but it is extremely expressive. In my opinion this version is superior to John Williams', and praise doesn't come higher than that.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new slant on familiar material, 12 Jun. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I already had a few different recordings of the Concerto no 1, and another collection of the complete concertos, but this is altogether a different kettle of fish! John Williams' first stab at it is one of my favourite Giuliani pieces, and his second - with a period instrument, and a VERY fluid tempo - took a while to get used to, but ultimately also became one of my favourites. The set by The Romeros is also very pleasing. THIS version, again on period instruments, is a whole new way of interpreting the concertos, and they come up completely fresh, and very satisfying indeed.
