5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read, 15 July 2010
The opening paragraphs of this book set the scene, and the rest of the book does not disappoint. Ron McMillan has brought to life the landscape of Shetland, but most of all has given the reader a glimpse of Shetland life and the remarkable people who live there. As a result I am convinced that, during our visit, getting to know Shetlanders will be as important as visiting historic sites or bird watching. This book is well worth reading even if you do not intend to travel to Shetland.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Guide Book Souvenir, 15 July 2010
This is a very well-presented book with comprehensive information about each of the areas of Shetland. There are some brilliant pictures: excellent information in the Appendix on birds, plants, historic sites and landscapes: and very useful hints about how to gain local information. However, its hard cover and glossy paper make it too heavy to take on holiday, so it will remain as a very good souvenir. Its information will be used in conjunction with Robin Holmes book 'The Holiday Planning Guide to Shetland'. This gives lots of directions and time requirements and will be very useful both in planning and during our holiday.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Basic Map, 15 July 2010
A clear, compact and uncomplicated map that gives a good overall view of Shetland. As we are yet to travel there I have no idea how useful it will be, but it has been helpful to understand where particular sites are as well as the general topography of the land.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rail Map of Europe, 8 Jun. 2010
This is a must have for the independent traveller in Europe as it covers over 6000 cities and towns. Every passenger railway is featured from high speed routes to local tracks, with scenic routes featuring mountain, river or coastal landscapes highlighted. Ferry routes are also featured. This map allows the traveller to plan journeys in great detail, so that great or small distances can be 'mapped' out in advance. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars the Rough Guide to Europe on a Budget, 8 Jun. 2010
This book has Europe and more - Scandinavia, Turkey and Morocco. There is a general overview of each country, followed by information on the capital city and then a look at the regions. For major cities, such as Venice, there are maps as well as information on the city as a whole and the principal places to visit. Transport to and within the region, accommodation, eating, drinking and entertainment are all set out clearly. For each country there is also a list of some basic words and phrases along with pronounciation. This book is a good basic start to planning a holiday in Europe as it gives the traveller some idea about what to expect.
