The end of the world in painful detail., 17 Jan. 2013
As other reviews have mentioned this book has a certain style that can put some people off. I didn't mind it at all. But the story really goes nowhere and with only two characters the depth of personality and insight has to be top draw. However the two very different characters never create enough friction to be really captivating.
What dog stars does do well, however, is create a huge void, much like The Road, and it's the protagonists exploration of the void at the end of the world, the emptiness of it all that really works. Very haunting and moving in places to.
The book cuts opinion down the middle and it's easy to see why. If you like slow sad stories about a winding spiral of depression at the end of the world then this book is for you.
