5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and informative, 29 Oct. 2014

This is a great introduction to the unfolding interface between Buddhism, neuroscience and the Western philosophical tradition. As Buddhism begins to inform contemporary culture in new and exciting ways - introducing practices like mindfulness and the compassion-based meditations, thinkers like Flanagan pave the way for an ever deeper engagement between these three spheres. I enjoyed it immensely.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really valuable addition to their previous works, 29 Mar. 2014

I teach Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in London and elsewhere and I've often referred those course participants who suffer from depression to the authors' previous title: The Mindful Way Through Depression. This new book now takes that one very valuable step further: laying out a step-by-step practical self-guided course. The authors' Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression, now in its second edition, was a ground-breaking development in the field, enabling the mindfulness-based approaches to enter the mainstream of psychological therapies. But that was written for clinicians. This new practical guide is very definitely devised for a readership who personally suffer from depression. Clearly written, simple and systematic, it has the capacity to be immensely helpful to anyone who follows the the guidance it lays out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better..., 22 Feb. 2013
Reading the first edition of this book was like having your eyes opened to a fresh world of human potential. The authors blazed a trail, bringing up to the minute science and an insight into the operation of psychological mechanisms to bear on the ancient arts of mindfulness and meditation. Now it's even better. The new chapter on the inquiry process is especially helpful, casting clear light on what might otherwise be arcane. It's good to have audio at last and to have the science reprised to see where things have got to after ten years. And it's great to have opened up the discussion around compassion. It's all altogether really welcome.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully written, user-friendly guide to this effective therapy, 8 Dec. 2007
Having taught the methods these authors recommend to groups and individuals over the past three years I know that they work. But it's not always easy and one can find oneself caught up all sorts of dead-ends. The authors are well aware of that and take pains to make their points with clarity and a deep sensitivity to the issues involved. The result is a work that is highly effective and very approachable. I can't recommend it too highly.
