4.0 out of 5 stars The complex Kaiser decoded, 13 Nov. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having read Christopher Clark's Iron Kingdom I did not hesitate in reading Kaiser Wilhelm II, Life in Power. I was not disspointed.

History has been brutal to Kaiser Wilhelm portraying him as a warmongering and power hungry figure, vain and foolish causing the destruction of the Hohenzollern Empire his forefathers worked so tirelessly to create.

Clark really uncovers the layers upon layers of the complex personality that is Wilhelm the Second. The book is a breathtaking study in the psyche of leader taking us through his childhood and early years as well as his years in power. His disliking of his father, envy of Bismarck and increasing lack of any authority as the First World War progresses are amongst the intriguing facts that Clark brings to front.

Clark really does a fine job decoding Wilhelm the tragic figure that lost a crown and an empire and paved the way for the horrors that were to descend upon Germany in the years to come, one which he watched in horror from his exile in Holland.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful - Funny and Romantic, 13 Nov. 2011
This review is from: Summer Storm [DVD] (DVD)
As a fan of German films in general I had high hopes for this film and I wasn't disappointed.

It's a lovely coming out story of a young member of a rowing team in rural southern Germany struggling with his feelings and unreturned feelings for his best friend. As the captain of his rowing team he has a role to play but finds it increasingly difficult to hide his crush and attention of the opposite sex.

His homophobic teammates really think they've hit the jackpot when going on a trip to a rowing match in the middle of a forest where they except to find lovely ladies but instead stumble upon a team of young gays. The encounter is hilarious!

The young actors do a brilliant job. This fact along with a good narrative makes this film a thoroughly enjoyable experience for any movie fan, especially of German cinematography.

The Bellini Card (Yashim the Ottoman Detective)
The Bellini Card (Yashim the Ottoman Detective)
by Jason Goodwin
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Thumps up for Goodwin!, 13 Nov. 2011
The Bellini Card is another delightful tale of Yashim the detective eunuch in service of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century.

In this book his friend the Polish friend Palewski plays a very prominent role as he heads out to Venice on a mission for his friend Yashim.

Goodwin manages to bring the decaying Venice to life under Hapsburg rule, full of deceit, murders and plots.

If you are a fan of Yashim it's a must read. If you are new to the series start with the first book, The Janissary Tree and get to know this brilliant creation of Goodwin from the very start.

Thumps up for Goodwin!

Cathedral of the Sea
Cathedral of the Sea
by Ildefonso Falcones
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.98

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning - Emotional - Captivating, 13 Nov. 2011
This review is from: Cathedral of the Sea (Paperback)
Since reading this book it has become one of my all time favorite. What caught my attention at first was the setting, Catalonia in the middle ages, a growing Barcelona. The author really does a good job bringing the historical background to life. Yet, what fascinated me most were the characters and that narrative, how it plays out. It is simple and honest. It is easy to get seriously involved with the main characters to share in their laughter, hardship, joy and tears.

It is, in all honesty, hard to fathom that this is the author's first novel. He has reached a stage beyond promising and I've been looking forward to his next achievement. I hope it will be as captivating as The Cathedral of the Sea is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth watching!, 23 July 2007

This review is from: Machuca [DVD] (DVD)
This isn't a political film although set in the midst of political events which is the 1973 military coup in Chile and the months preceding it. The turmoil in the country reaching a boiling point is clearly visible in protests and shortages of food and in news real showing Marxist president Allende in Moscow greeting his totalitarian friends. The director succeeds in creating a clear image of the situation as it was back in 1973 without propaganda which would have jeopardized the artistic integrity of the movie. Don't brand it as a "leftist" film it isn't.

What stands out is friendship that reaches beyond class barriers, a coming of age saga of three youngsters that eventually become the victims of the situation in their country as it reaches its climax in a bitter hatred of "them" and "us". It is sad and heartbreaking.

The young actors do an outstanding job I might add and cast you in their net with their sincere performances which alone makes the film worth watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best war movie ever made!, 23 July 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Brotherhood [DVD] (DVD)
This is an epic movie about two brothers in the midst of the Korean War, about their love and sacrifice. Their relationship is at the center stage but in the background a story of a nation torn by war.

The battle scenarios are the best one yet and leaves such highly praised movies as Saving Private Ryan in a distant second place when it comes to realism and fighting.

The filming is truly magnificent with a director who knows what he is doing on every front. Without the brilliant performance of the cast the film would not be as complete as it is.

This is a passionate, powerful, heartbreaking film of an epic proportion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving beyond words, 20 July 2007

This review is from: Innocent Voices [DVD] (DVD)
The movie "Salvador" made a lasting impression; it was a movie about the political situation in El Salvador during years of civil war, about death-squads and human suffering."Innocent people" is about humans and humanity itself.

I embraced myself for the horrors to come in "Innocent voices" how can movie portray war without blood and terror done in the latest Hollywood fashion. But then again this isn't a Hollywood movie.

The film captures innocence, beauty, tranquility of forest scenario of rivers, in children's games and laughter. Yet the war is always present in uniformed soldiers, stray bullets in the middle of the night, tears of mothers and the inevitable abduction of young boys ear-marked for a grown up's war at the age of 12, a fact ever present in the film.

Stunning performances by young actors and older ones alike! I was at awe the whole time the film ever surprising me. A powerful story played out perfectly on a grand scale and worth every ones time.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of a kind, 19 July 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This movie is one a kind. It follows a group of raw Soviet army recruits in training and on mission in Afghanistan in 1988-1989. The actors are just stunning in their performances each and everyone. Its action packed and yet in a realistic fashion which makes everything come alive before your eyes. The Scenario is wonderful and captivating. Above all else it's about brotherhood of men cast in the hell hole of war and how their emotions play out in these un-human circumstances. The Russians are true masters of film making and this one proves it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great piece of work about a great man!, 2 Jun. 2007
Ataturk was both an amazing personality and a very complex one. To the Turkish nation he is almost godlike but of course he had both his weaknesses and strengths. Kinross does him great justice in an excellent penmanship which makes the book both interesting and worth reading. It's also a history of the founding of the Turkish Republic which can not be set apart from Ataturk himself. I have read several biographies about Ataturk and really recommend this one. It reads through like a novel, meaning it keeps you fixed for the whole of the book.
