5.0 out of 5 stars Nice bit of electro clash, 20 Oct. 2009
This review is from: Voodoo (MP3 Download)
Love the big sloppy bass and eerie synths on this. Shame the rest of the album wasn't as synthy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your usual Science Fiction, 20 Oct. 2009
I'd been meaning to read this for a couple of years and as it was one of the books in Surrey Libraries 'Big Science Read' promotion I thought I'd go for it. It was great and I'll read it again some time. The premise is that the main character, Charlie, has severe learning difficulties and is helped(?) to overcome them by scientists. As he becomes a genius he's able to see his old life from a new perspective. There are some very sad moments as he realises that not everything in his old/new life is as he first thought. It reminded me of the 'The curious incident of the dog in the night time'. It gives an interesting perspective on someone with severe learning difficulties and the prejudices (positive and negative) other people have. It's much more too. This review doesn't do it justice. I just think it's the best book I've read for ages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Traditional Christmas prog fayre, 4 Feb. 2009
This review is from: Christmas Album (Audio CD)
If you're looking for something Christmassy and different, have a listen to this album. It gives the feel of a nostalgic Christmas, even though it was released in the early 2000s. It includes both original tracks and cover versions of traditional songs/tunes. The cover versions generally aren't as you'd expect them - different tunes. It's similar to Songs from the Wood, but not as good. There are a couple of duff tracks, but on the whole, it's enjoyable and makes you want to sit in front of an open log fire with a pint of mulled cider.

5.0 out of 5 stars Goldfrapp in saucy synthesizer shock, 1 Feb. 2009
This review is from: Black Cherry (Audio CD)
This is Goldfrapp's top CD for me. Great combination of their original dreamy trip-hop style and some harsh upbeat electropop. I prefer the electropop side of their music though. Sleazy, dirty tracks in there too, like Twist and Strict Machine. Even though the emotions on the CD seem to veer towards the darker and melancholic side of life, the irony is it still puts me in a positive mood.

2.0 out of 5 stars Some good and bad, 18 Dec. 2008
This review is from: Cradle Of Fear [2001] [DVD] (DVD)
The 'Sick room' segment is really good, but the other stories are nowhere near up to it's standard. Acting is iffy in most places. If it hadn't been for 'Sick room' it would have got 1 star from me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Christmas shivers, 7 Dec. 2008
This review is from: Black Christmas [DVD] (DVD)
This is a remake of horror film Black Christmas [1974]. I just got this on a whim last Christmas - the media reviews (from decent sources) weren't fantastic, but I thought I'd give it a go. I was pleasantly surprised. It's a slasher film, but has enough that's different in it to make it more appealing than other current slasher films! It's well done and the story makes more sense than most, which is always a nice bonus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Merry Christmas Gizmo, 7 Dec. 2008
This review is from: Gremlins [DVD] [1984] (DVD)
One of my top alternative Christmas films. If you're tired of watching White Christmas [2001] or It's A Wonderful Life [1946] try this... it still has a magical Christmas feel to it!!! I never felt this could be classed as a horror film, but I really rate it as a comedy/fantasy film. It's just very daft and spawned a load of puppet based little monster films, which weren't half as good as this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tube travellers beware!, 7 Dec. 2008
My favourite horror film of all time. I never tire of watching it. Great effects and they still put most modern horror films to shame. Plenty of humour in there too, but it doesn't distract from the horror. Still makes me feel uneasy about walking through those lonely London Underground tunnels on my own late at night.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worst of the Dead, 7 Dec. 2008
Good idea, great effects, but script is a bit woolly in places. Prefer 'Land of the Dead (2005)' and 'Dawn of the Dead [2004]'.
