2.0 out of 5 stars Not suitable for audio in, 16 Jun. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I had hoped this would work as an audio line-in USB adapter. It has the right look and fits, but doesn't work. On a MacBook Pro it just gives an error that the USB was drawing too much power and all USB devices would be shut down -- not ideal! To be fair, the product description doesn't specifically state it is suitable for input, but just in case you were thinking it might work... it doesn't.

Anathem

5.0 out of 5 stars One of his best books, 5 Dec. 2013

This review is from: Anathem (Hardcover)
Neal Stephenson is a variable writer. At his best, brilliant and un-put-downable. At his worst, verbose and badly edited. This is definitely one of the best. Monks in space, what more do you need to know?

1.0 out of 5 stars Worked for a bit then blew up, 5 Dec. 2013

It overheated and failed with a bang and a bad smell after a few weeks. Next time I'm going to buy a proper Apple charger.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, traditional and much better than a pinger, 5 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've bought several new bikes over the years for family members and they always come with "pinger" style bells that never work. This bell is cheap and does exactly what is required -- a decent bell sound. Great value.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and fiddly to maintain; good froth though, 29 Oct. 2009
First, the good news: if you like cappuccinos and lattes, this machine does great steam-frothing. There is ample space for a large mug under the frothing spout, and there is a good long supply of steam.

But the bad news:

I have owned this machine for three months now, and I use it every day. I find the strength of the espresso liquor it produces is just weak compared to my previous machine (a Gaggia, which sadly broke). I have read everyone's comments about fresh-ground coffee and preheating, and it may well be that if I fly to Bolivia and roast and grind my own beans I will get better flavour. All I can say is that for normal people who use shop-bought pre-ground coffee (I use Lavazza; a reputable brand) it will not give good results.

Apart from the weakness of the brew, the worst thing is that the coffee filter holder gets clogged with fine grounds and cannot be cleaned. The holder is a bonded two-part item such that there is an internal gap between the filter base and a single, tiny water exit hole, and you can't get to both sides of either to clear away debris. This is a big problem. I spend hours soaking, poking, descaling, bashing it to get water to flow through it again.

Until they have a new filter holder suitable for home cleaning, avoid this. It will block up every week.

Advanced Mac OS X Programming
Advanced Mac OS X Programming
by Mark Dalrymple
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to the system tools and internals, 29 Oct. 2009
I learned an amazing amount of useful information from this book on how to monitor and peek into existing applications, as well as debug my own.

This is the second edition of a book called "Core Mac OS X and Unix Programming", and that original title was much more apt. It is strong on the Unix underpinnings of OS X and the tools to manipulate it. There is almost nothing about Cocoa development or Mac UI application development. If you are looking for a guide on advanced Cocoa frameworks and how to write the next iTunes, this isn't your book.

Could do with a 3rd edition soon though: This book is based on OS X 10.4 (Tiger). Now we are at 10.6 we need more info on dtrace, the 64-bit world, etc.

2.0 out of 5 stars Overrated and overwritten "masterpiece", 29 Oct. 2009
I suspect this book is the Citizen Kane of modern literature -- everyone says it is so good that no-one dares disagree, and it will always be up there at the top of the list.

For me, it was an interesting plot and setup, but my goodness it read like the output of a creative writing course. Annoying narrator talking to the reader expositions; annoying narrator's future self looking back knowingly on events... it destroyed any continuity and made it very hard to read.

All in all, it's grossly overrated.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fuzzy focus, 16 April 2008
Attaching this converter to the HandyCam seems to really mess up the long distance focussing. Landscapes become very fuzzy, though close-ups aren't too bad.

It's a shame because the compact size makes it perfect for slipping into your pocket, and it clips on and off the camera very easily. But poor quality optical performance really make it unusable.
