3.0 out of 5 stars Ostalgie, 16 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Fridolin lands a position as a teacher in a kindergarten, which raises some eyebrows, especially when he showers naked with the children and goes on to bathe naked with their mothers in a river. Starts off well enough but too quickly moves away from the kindergarten to focus on the adults and their relationships. The twins are delightful but disappear from the story after the first few episodes. 'Ostalgie' for those growing up in East Germany at the time.

In German with no English (or German) subtitles.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant adaptation, 16 April 2014

Pleasant enough version of the classic story of a little girl who brings life back to a moribund father and son, expressed symbolically in the form of the neglected garden. 'Jane Eyre' provided author Burnett with the template for her story, with Colin taking the place of the mad wife locked in the attic and so on.

There are two main changes: A clumsy bit of exposition tries to account for why Mary is staying with a family friend rather than a relative (her uncle in the original story), so that Mary and Colin can marry at the end of the film in a completely unnecessary attempt at infusing the story with an adult romance, and Mary is evidently from Texas, judging from her accent, a detail I don't recall from the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars sweet tale, simply told, 16 April 2014

This review is from: Ms. Bear [IMPORT] (DVD)
Briefly a little girl finds a bear-cub separated from its mother and looks after it, her family becoming closer as a consequence, while a dishonest wildlife ranger tries to steal it to sell to poachers. It is more or less believable, though the mother (German actress Natja Jamaan, cast as part of the deal with the German co-financiers), with her super-model looks, seems very out-of-place in this humdrum suburban family. The film is Dutch-released, with Dutch subtitles that can be turned off, and is suitable for all ages.
