1.0 out of 5 stars Too clever by half., 21 Dec. 2016

Apart from the essay by Varoufakis, which is excellent as one might expect, most of the rest of this book is written in academic jargon which I find mostly unintelligble and so just gave up,Just as well it cost nothing. If Yanis Varoufakis can write in language most literate people can understand, then why can't everyone else?

Koestler recounts the fascinating story of an almost forgotten ancient history of a tribe, the Khazaars, who lived in the 8thcent in an area which extended between the Caucasus and the Volga and who adopted Judaism as their religion in opposition toChristianity and Islam. This commitment has by various routes persisted to this day and Koestler sites this as evidence of the Jewish people's presence in later centuries throuout the world.During the Middle Ages the majority of those who professed the Jewish faith were Khazaars, and a substantial number of these went to Poland,Lithuania and Hungary, where the Eastern Jews were founded, and this in turn became the dominant majority of world Jewry for which there is strong evidence for Khazaar/Turkish derivation. In a chapter 'Race and Myth',it is explained that the Jews of today fall into two main categories:Sephardim and Ashkenazim. In the 1960s the number of Sephardic Jews was estimated at 500,000,whereas the Ashenazic was around eleven million, and so in common parlance 'jew' is almost synonymous with the Ashkenazic Jew.The question as to whether the Jews are a pure race or rather a religious sect is examined, historians whether Austrian,Israeli or Polish, have argued independently that the bulk of modern Jewry is not Palestinian but Caucasian in origin, and the findings of anthropology, contrary to popular view, show that there is no Jewish race, and this is the accepted view today. In summing up,Koestler recognises that there are unavoidable implications inherent in this account, but notes this may be misinterpreted. The State of Israel's right to exist is based on international law.It may be noted that this book, published American edition 1976,and given present history re the Israeli/Palestine conflict, seems to have increasing pertinence today.

''For amost 500 years the jews of Europe were kept apart, confined to ghettos or tiny villages in the countryside. Then in one extraordinary moment in the French Revolution, the jews of France were emancipated. The era of emancipation had begun.''I came across this book by way of a BBC World Service item in which Michael Goldfarb explained his motivation for writing it,and I am glad I did as I found it most engrossing and quite a learning experience. The book is remarkable for the amount of detailedhistory it contains, covering an era around the French Revolution to the beginning of the 20th century.During the French Revolution, jews in France were emancipated and their freedoms were expanded under Napoleon who by both treaty and conquest,in the heartland of Ashkenazic jewry, jews in Prussia, northern Germany,Poland, were set free. But with the demise of Napoleon, jewish rights were systematically withdrawn and it was left to others to press for emancipation of the jews and this is the heart of the story he has to tell.Long passages are given to Moses Hess,Heinrich Heinne,Moses Mendelssohn,Gabriel Riesser,Ferdinand Lassaille, and others who gave up their lives for the cause, and by 1846 Theodor Herzel had published his pamphlet,The Jewish State:An Attempt at a Modern Solution of the Jewish problem. Also discussed is the role of Karl Marx who saw jewish liberation as part of the socialist process and the liberation of workers internationally. The Dreyfus affair is dealt with and the book moves on to introduce the role of jews in more recent times:Freud.Bergson,Mahler,Einstein,Wittgenstein,Kafka, are amongst those who have, with their modern methods of thought, changed the world. What makes this book so impressive and convincing is that it is by writer whos family is a product of the very subject of which he writes,so that every passage is of relevance and full of meaning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dangerous Powers, 15 Jun. 2009
"Hassan Abbassa,a senior Revolutionary Guard intelligance officer said in a secret meeting...'We have identified twenty-nine sensitive sites in the West...with the aim of bombing them in mind. Our intention is that 6,000 nuclear war-heads in America explode in America...We have also set up a department in Britain, and the debate over topling it is on the agenda...'Fortunately Abbassa found himself in American custody."One of the many intriguing nuggets of information contained in this book which I found both illuminating and engrossing,as it reads like a thriller throughout its 385 pages whilst being a mine of information regarding Iran's murky relations and influence with the West and the middle east.Iran's interventions in Lebanon, the creation of Hezbollah, and Iran's combat with Israel are extensively discussed.Since Bergman is an investigative Israeli journalist, one might have expected a slant in the discourse in that direction, but Bergman deals only with facts which have been gathered across ten years of research, providing an amazing insight into the shenanegans and political manoeuvring that have been going on between dangerous powers in the middle east.

3.0 out of 5 stars Why?, 21 April 2009
I bought this in order to replace my original copy bought many years ago but since lost. What I did not know however was that this is an exact copy of the original publication[copyright presumably expired]but in a reduced paperback format with print size correspondently smaller and therefore of little use for teaching purposes and for reading directly off the page. This surely should be made clear to prospective buyers.A pity since this is still one of the best tutors to be had in spite of its age and I would highly recommend the original publication.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where has all the money gone?, 1 Feb. 2009
Robert Peston writes excellent understandable and uncluttered english, dealing with what could be a complicated subject in a straightforward way [just like his television appearances].His detailed background knowledge of his subject, and the players in it,is impressive, and his explanations as to how and where the billions of all our money has gone, whilst not surprising,is most revealing.A must read.
