7" Douglas Protractor
7" Douglas Protractor

5.0 out of 5 stars A useful instrument., 9 Mar. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: 7" Douglas Protractor (Misc.)
For a small chart table, on a small boat or cruising dinghy, nothing compares, or competes with a Douglas Protractor.
I've owned several; some I've given away; others I've kept safe inside a book (and forgotten which book!).

This one is strong and well-made; I have to take the calibration on trust, but it agrees with my Portland Plotter and with my Capt Fields parallel rules.

The instructions are in 'Chinglish'; if I didn't already know how to use it they wouldn't help much.

6" Full Circle Nautical Protractor
6" Full Circle Nautical Protractor
Offered by Charles Smith & Reddish Ltd
Price: £6.00

2.0 out of 5 stars It's a protractor., 9 Mar. 2017

A protractor is always useful, especially a well-made one like this

As a navigation instrument, I don't understand its value. Yes, it gives angles for bearings and headings, but not straight lines!

Sailing Ships: The Story of Their Development From Earliest Times to the Present Day
Sailing Ships: The Story of Their Development From Earliest Times to the Present Day
by E. Keble (Edward Keble) 187 Chatterton
Edition: Paperback
Price: £16.95

2.0 out of 5 stars I'm confused, 9 Mar. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
E Keble Chatterton was a hugely prolific writer; a verbose, repetitive windbag.
As a Lieutenant Commander, RNVR and an amateur yachtsman he really should not have confused 'knots' with 'nautical miles'; but at least his confusion was consistent throughout his prodigious output.
His research into ships from early Egyptian times to his 'present day' (around the First World War) was extensive and (according to him) thorough. The reproductions of paintings, drawings, carvings and artefacts is very impressive, yet his written descriptions are muddled and confused: did he really not understand that sails are never square? and that 'square', in this context, means 'at right angles to the mast'? He wrote an entire book about the developement of 'fore and aft' sails from 'square sails' without ever convincing me that he understood either term.

If I've been unjust with Chatterton I hope to be forgiven, but I'm not convinced that he understood what he was writing about.

4.0 out of 5 stars OK, 31 Oct. 2016

I wanted a full face, positive pressure vapour filter, but couldn't find one at an acceptable price.
This one leaves my eyes and ears exposed to epoxy vapour.

It fits well, and the valve ensures that exhalations don't contaminate the filters or fog my glasses.
Inhalations are more difficult than normal; I'd be very worried if they weren't! It suggests that the filters are working.

Thames Estuary (Admiralty Tidal Stream Atlas)
Thames Estuary (Admiralty Tidal Stream Atlas)
Price: £9.00

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful on a broad scale, 31 Oct. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A tidal atlas is essential for sailing the Thames Estuary, especially in a dinghy.
This is set out in hours before and after HW: a simple calculation gives the times which I then write on bits of sticky paper on each page.

It's publication date is irrelevant; tidal atlases last a long time.

It gives no local detail for the estuaries.
You'll need local harbour websites for that.

Draper Expert 13501 Respirator Combi Refills (Pack of 2)
Draper Expert 13501 Respirator Combi Refills (Pack of 2)
Price: £16.70

4.0 out of 5 stars Hopeful, 31 Oct. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I sometimes work with epoxy resin.

I take great care to cover my skin,
and I needed something to protect my lungs.

I couldn't smell epoxy (or, indeed, anything) through these filters,
so I hope they are working.

4.0 out of 5 stars It worked, 31 Oct. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
We took two iPads, two iPhones and a Kindle with us on holiday.
The boat has few sockets, so this device was useful.

It has a blue light when working: this is mildly irritating, but not a show-stopper.
It has two sockets for IOS devices (these worked OK),
and two sockets for Android devices; these worked OK with all our devices.

If it never works again, it was worth it!
We hope it'll continue to work.

Lomo Kayak Bilge Pump With Hose
Lomo Kayak Bilge Pump With Hose

3.0 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointing, 9 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The item had clearly been in transit (from China) or in stock for quite some time.
The outlet hose was pinched and deformed, and had stuck to the packaging.
The valve(s) in the pump had hardened, but eventually softened with water.
The seal between the piston shaft and the cylinder leaks.
But it was cheap and it works. It gets most of the water out of the bilges, leaving only a little to be sponged.

Sadly, it stopped working after a few days and I bought a proper pump.
