God Without Passions: A Reader
God Without Passions: A Reader

4.0 out of 5 stars Reformed and Puritan writers on divine impassibility, 21 Feb. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The doctrine of divine impassibility is widely misunderstood, or neglected, even by many people who subscribe to the Reformed confessions of faith in which the teaching is upheld.

This volume contains a wealth of material from Reformers and their early and later Puritan successors supporting and explaining the doctrine; there is a remarkable consistency in the understanding of the many witnesses called to put the case. The labour involved in compiling this reader must have been considerable, and we are in Samuel Renihan's debt for this.

By no means are all the writers included here well-known names (at least, not to me) and I should have liked to see brief biographical details; also bibliographical guidance on where to find modern editions of the works referenced, where applicable. In addition, some suggestions for further reading would have been helpful.

God without Passions: A Primer

Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A book which has been needed for a long time, 21 Feb. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The doctrine of divine impassibility (that God who is unchanging is without affections or passions) is nowadays neglected by people who say they believe it and misunderstood by those who say they don't. Samuel Renihan gives us here a concise and wonderfully clear account of the Biblical foundations of the doctrine and goes on to consider the being of God as he reveals himself, and the nature of men as creatures. There is a valuable chapter on the incarnation of Christ and finally a summary of the pastoral and practical application of the doctrine.

The supporting quotations (apart from the Scripture references) are also to be found, more extensively, among the material in the companion volume God without Passions: A Reader which I also recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good enough for the purpose, 26 Jan. 2016

These containers are far better than the type with translucent lids or panels (they let the light in, and the lids on former type are prone to fall apart). They are a good size, too, for most spice storage needs. They are not, however, made to very close tolerances and the lids can in some cases be rather loose. All in all, a good buy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor value, 15 July 2015
The contents are fine, but the extra cost of the tin is wasted. The tin is too small for a full pack of lozenges once they have been loosened from the packet; the hinges are poor quality and come apart at the least provocation. The very light gauge metal dents easily. Very poor value for money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Genuinely heavy duty, 13 July 2015
These are good: genuinely strong (made from 5mm thick steel) and the galvanising has been done after manufacture, so it is complete. They are easy to fix, though it's best to use an angled cordless driver as the access to the second fixing hole from the top is restricted. Once fixed to the wall, the triangular space below the horizontal bar provides extra storage capacity, for example for light lengths of timber which can be threaded through.
My only reservation is that I had to bend two of the four brackets I ordered into shape before fixing, using a vice. Perhaps quality control needs to be improved. All in all, though, a good buy.

Worshipping with Calvin
Worshipping with Calvin
by Terry Johnson
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly important book, 12 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The book's title may be misleading. This is not a book about John Calvin, or mainly about the forms of worship which Calvin promoted in Geneva during his ministry there. Rather, it is a call to Christians living in the present day to understand the need to participate in worship which embraces the understanding of historic Reformed Protestantism, that stretches back to the ancient church and forward through the post-Reformation centuries, that is truly catholic and thoroughly Biblical.
While the book is in a sense polemical, Johnson seeks to persuade Christians who are following other traditions, rather than setting out to confront or to attack them. Especially, he wants to invite those of his own generation who profess to be Reformed in doctrine but who have not yet adopted Reformed practice in worship, to understand and appreciate the richness, depth and Biblical coherence that comes from worshipping with Calvin.
Johnson’s arguments are plentifully supported by a wealth of Scriptural exposition and reference to many writers of different times. There is a very satisfactory classified bibliography of nearly fifty pages.
The written style is always pleasant; however some of the chapters feel a little too long, that the point has already been made. (Occasionally, too, the proofreader has nodded.) Some of the references to church life and practice in the USA I found hard to relate to; at times the examples of bizarre behaviour made me thankful that I lead a relatively sheltered life in the UK. But all that Johnson has to say is highly relevant to Christians in every part of the world: his arguments to show that Biblical worship is and should be supra-cultural are especially valuable.
Altogether, this is a must-read book, one of the most important of recent times both for its subject matter and for its persuasive power. I wish I had had it to read years ago. I look forward to the promised sequel, Serving with Calvin, in which the author plans to show how the principles for which he argues may be put into practice.

This review is from: Mens Thornproof Pruning Gloves
On the plus side, they are comfortably soft. However, they are far from being thornproof as claimed. Mine developed a hole in one finger on the third outing, and I won't be buying these gloves again.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good buy, 16 Mar. 2015

These are well-made, functional bags each with a good zip and a handy lightweight carabiner for attaching the bag to something else when required. They lack a transparent panel through which to view the contents, though, and there is no space for a label. Curiously, the black bag has a smooth texture and the other two a woven finish. It's a pity these are not available in single sizes, and perhaps in a wider choice of colours. Prices can fluctuate, so buy them when the price drops as they're very useful to have.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, 16 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was disappointed with these. They contain no menthol (so are less effective than other brands) and, being quite brittle, tend to break up in the tin when carried around, with messy results when the lid is opened. On the plus side, the tin itself is robust (though difficult to open).
