The Brightest Star in the Sky
The Brightest Star in the Sky
by Marian Keyes
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

4.0 out of 5 stars put your feet up and enjoy, 22 Jun. 2011
Let me say firstly ..i adore marian keyes' books , and i'm a bloke ..seems most reviewers are women.
picked marian's " the other side of the story " up as an impulse choice when had to pick a third book on waterstones 3 for 2 table .. was going to give it to my wife to read but i got to it first ..i absolutely love her books , especially when written in first person.
marian says she doesnt write from personal experience so much , but i can spot her
i agree she has gone down a bit with recent novels but this one was a " read at the table during dinner " book
yes it's a bit fantasy and there were many characters , and some of the the partner swapping was les than believable , but it is basically a comedic novel
nothing beats watermelon so dont expect that again ..move on and enjoy

4.0 out of 5 stars thought provoking, 28 Feb. 2011
Thought provoking read ..it serves to remind people of my age ( 50 ) and younger than older people are only different to us by age .
It sounds obvious but too many times we are guilty of forgetting that
Indeed a lot of stories in this book are from people more adventurous than many of the people who will read it
I find it hard sometimes to believe the conditions that people who are alive today have lived through and yet seem not to complain.

In only a few cases did people not seem to enjoy their child hood and upbringing.

This is not a " young people of today don't know how lucky they are " book , they do not profess that their lives were better or worse but just tell their lives as they were .It's up to the reader to decide

4.0 out of 5 stars NEW TWIST, 24 Dec. 2010
This review is from: The TV Detective (Paperback)
I enjoyed the slight twist on this , approaching it from out side the police force .Very readable and liked the litte link into his next book
Also enjoyed insight into TV reporting .Some characters a little sterotyped I agree , but arent all police detective novels and films ?
His boss demanding results was a nice replacement for grumpy chief - constables a la Morse , Frost etc
Didnt see need for girl friend involvements, that felt a bit detective - by numbers
Overall , am looking forwrd to next one

5.0 out of 5 stars BUY IT, 1 Nov. 2010
This review is from: Narrow Margins (Paperback)
Absolutely loved this one.. Loved the flow of the prose and humour in adversity and the self deprecation about her control issues.
This must surely be autobiographical because although it easy in these internet days to research facts there's no way you can write with such hatred of surveyors or love of jimmy choos unless you've lived it.
Annoyed my wife by constantly laughing out loud ( i know every paper reviewer say it ,,but i did ) and then making her endure me reading the funny bits to her , even though she'd given me the book to read after her.Like other reviewers I havent finished it yet but wanted to share my thoughts as soon as poss ..will definitely be keeping for a re-read ..sorry charity shop !

4.0 out of 5 stars MIDSUMMER MARPLE, 28 Oct. 2010
Didnt think I was going to enjoy book when I first started .. Updated Marple ( more Magaret Rutherford than Joan Hickson ) but once I found myself reading it in bath , I knew I must be liking it .. An enjoyable enough read though and would read more .Other reviews summarise the plot well enough and the cover should give clue to the content .Overall, " it does what it says on the tin "
