the acting is perfect, but if the book ever had an edge (if you believe the extra features), it has completely disappeared in this film. So it's more like a mushy and vanilla story than a real satire.

a gem of a satire : funny and sad at the same time. When the film ends, you start thinking. And if you like ABBA, you'll have the time of your life.

It's a good idea to connect real landscapes and the artists/writers/musicians who painted them, wrote or composed music about them. We learn a lot, without being bored. But sometimes, the "visits" are too short and superficial. We may feel frustrated.

Simon Schama's The Power Of Art: The Complete BBC Series [DVD] [2006]
Dvd ~ Simon Schama
Price: £11.00

4.0 out of 5 stars the power of art, 7 Jan. 2010

all the parts are informative. But sometimes there is not enough subject matter on the painter/painting for the time imparted, so Schama resorts to repetitive pieces of acting which don't bring anything to his documentary or comments, and bored me to death. I'm thinking in particular of the parts about Caravaggio and Rothko. The best part is the one about Rembrandt.

Perfect if you like references to literature and art in general. The contrast between the chief inspector and his sergent is a treat. Some stories are deliciously twisted, and the views of Oxford are great. I think those series are even better than the old Morse ones, but that's just my opinion.

I particularly disliked the Mansfield Park adaptation : too short, and the actress for Fanny is badly cast. Northanger Abbey is OK, probably because shorter than Mansfield Park and so easier to adapt for a film lasting less than two hours. Emma is perfectly acted, but once again, the adaptation is too short for such a rich novel.

it is good, but some "episodes" don't dwell on architecture that much, and it's a pity. Part 5, "Connections", is excellent

Ah, England just like everybody dreams of it, with murders, wickedness, betrayals and the like to spice it up. The views are beautiful, the acting perfect, and bordering on the caricatural to underline the cliches.

very interesting, but old hat now that the presidential election is finished. The chapter about the building of American indentity and country doesn't even once mention the Native Americans and the genocide.

This review is from: As You Like It [DVD] (DVD)
A bit too short, and frankly the idea of putting the story in 19th century Japan does not bring any good idea. Even with suspension of disbelief, it's hard to imagine a Japenes forest called "Arden", a Japanese wrestler called "Charles". The idea that the bad brother follows Japanese customs (down to the dresscode) as opposed to the good one who is still westernized is simply ridiculous. There's a nice trick in the film with fans, but you don't have to be in Japan for that.
