5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful tragedy, 29 Mar. 2010
This review is from: This Bleeding City (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This Bleeding City is a heartbreaking tale of greed and how it can simultaneously push one to greater things as well as tear them away. The protagonist Charles is a very average person from a very average family who is exposed to high society during his time at University, people who are bright and sophisticated and interesting and entirely free from the money worries mere mortals experience. From then on his vision of the world is forever tainted with the idea that wealth and material gain will ultimately bring him happiness, and so he sets out on a career in the financial sector working alongside the rich and morally bankrupt. Set against the backdrop of the "credit crunch" which devastated many financial organisations this novel is in many places a very sad read as Charles struggles to live something approaching a normal life.

This book paints such an eloquent picture of everything that is wrong with capitalist society through the microcosm of Charles. He consistently comes so close to happiness, only to suddenly loose it as he becomes obsessed with finding something better than what he already has. At the heart of the book is both a story of romance and a moral tale of the hollowness of material gain. I was certainly not expecting a book that I would enjoy this much nor a book that would leave me feeling so haunted at the end. The way in which this very difficult story is written is absolutely beautiful, the writing style flows like silk across the page and this is certainly a novelist that I will want to see more from. A wonderful, tragic story.

Lottery: The Fortunes and Misfortunes of Perry L. Crandall
Lottery: The Fortunes and Misfortunes of Perry L. Crandall

Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars The man beneath the preconception, 25 Mar. 2010
Like Forrest Gump, Lottery tells the story of a man with below average intelligence who through the course of the book shows that what would be a defining moment for most people is really unimportant to him. The story is really quite beautiful as you see the world through the childlike and kind eyes of Perry who can only see the best in people and to whom the money really does not mean anything. As a normally slow reader I ran through this book in just a handful of days and I honestly could not stop reading. The story is in essence a moral tale, as Perry remains unchanged by the money yet everyone sees him differently and because of that they see the person underneath the preconception. Though the ending may not be what you expect or hope for, it is a happy ending and I did feel uplifted when I put the book down. A charming story to say the least.

3.0 out of 5 stars Embroiled with love and tragedy, 21 Feb. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Dear John (Paperback)
This is the first of Sparks's novels and I can see why he is such a popular author. In spite of his work often being very sickly sweet and following a sentimentalism that seems to have been born out of watching too much Disney, there is a real thoughtfulness to his work that I have found to be touching and moving.

Dear John is not at all a story of a perfect romance but more a story of what love really is. The story is at times ridiculously kitsch and made me giggle with the sentiments of how much they love each other, though when you peel away that first initial layer you find something rather powerful indeed. Worth a read if you are looking for an uncomplicated romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for a workout, 20 Feb. 2010

This is a very good top, I originally purchased it for working out in whilst the weather has been cold and it has done very well. The material is very soft so it is not at all abrasive on your skin and is very comfortable.

My original cable that came with my iPhone was pretty much ruined when I decided to get this. Though it isn't identical to the one in the box, it does the exact same job and I have not experienced any problems with it at all.

Best of Lonely Planet Travel Writing (Lonely Planet Travel Literature)
Best of Lonely Planet Travel Writing (Lonely Planet Travel Literature)

Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars Through the keyhole..., 20 Feb. 2010
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
What this book offers is a glimpse into the world of travelling. This is not a book filled with stories of young sun-seekers looking for some beach to settle on to work on their tan, but people who want to really experience what a country has to offer. Each story is like peering through the keyhole at the experience and it completely filled me with wonder. The only down side I found was that each story was so short that it seemed to take only five minutes to read them, I was disappointed that none of them went into any greater detail than to just provide a taste of their journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soup as a main meal? Of course it can be..., 5 Jan. 2010
This book is a real treasure chest full of wonderful soup recipes that can be made very easily and tend not to take more than around thirty minutes to get together. Often soup has its place with your sandwiches for a lunch, however this book is filled with substantial recipes that have done wonderfully on many occasions for a main meal at the end of the day with a piece of crusty bread.

There is often a myth that cooking soup is meant to be tricky and something you generally only do to use up leftovers. This book does extremely well to shatter that illusion by grouping together soups that can be used in a variety of situations, from rather easy and everyday soups to things that you would serve as part of a dinner party. Whilst I often find it a shame when cook books lack any pictures of the finished products, in this case the directions were very easy to follow and have produced many wonderful meals.

At a time when people are trying to budget down and spend less on their food, this book is excellent. In the majority of cases the meals involve a lot of vegetables and store-cupboard ingredients which are cheap and easy to store. If you are looking to cut back on your food bills and eat better then this book is an excellent resource to turn to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Certainly a collectors item, 12 Dec. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Lord of the Rings (Hardcover)
I could write about the story of Lord of the Rings, though there seems to be little point. There are many other versions out there that are much cheaper than this, as such if you have come this far you either already know the story well or are looking to get an item of outstanding quality. This version is a collectors item, the sheer beauty of the book stunned me when I received it. The book itself is hard-backed with a red covering, though it has a black sleeve that had embossed onto the cover gold writing and images. The book itself is littered with small points where sections fold out to reveal maps or pictures that add great weight to the story. If you are looking to buy something for somebody who is already a big fan, or somebody who is looking for something of high quality then you need not look any further. The only way that this book could be any better is if it was signed by the author.

1.0 out of 5 stars Did not work, 28 Nov. 2009

This game would not work on a home-built PC as well as a brand new PC from Dell. The problem was identical on each computer and I was completely unable to resolve the issue. I contacted the manufacturer who offered some limited assistance before giving up. I was thoroughly dissapointed and instead purchased the version for the PS2 which works wonderfully. Be very careful when buying this as it seems that it is very difficult to operate with high-spec machines.

4.0 out of 5 stars Retro platform gaming at it's best, 28 Nov. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have been going through a bit of a nostalgia trip recently and remembering the games of my youth is perhaps one of the most fun things to do. I have tried the PC version of this game which did not work, however this version runs brilliantly on the PS2. The three most obvious games anyone will be going for is Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic and Knuckles. A fabulous addition is the ability to save the level that you have reached which was something that previously couldn't be done on the Megadrive version.

However, I was dissapointed that a certain version of Sonic and Knuckles wasn't included. There did used to be the option to play an extended version of Sonic The Hedgehog 3 when you combined Sonic & Knuckles with Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which also included the option to play the levels as Knuckles. It is a pity this was not included and is my single reason for not giving the game a full five stars. Otherwise though, fabulous gaming.
