3.0 out of 5 stars Men would have died but for Crean, 28 April 2015

Having studied the subject for many decades and spent 10 winters north of the Arctic Circle I was keen to fill in some gaps. The book certainly did that and I had no hesitation of reading it from cover to cover as one never knows what gem will appear. However I cannot on improve on CSP reader's review in that the author needs to find a good editor: repetitions on the same page are inexcusable. There is in fact very little that is new in this book. I was glad to read about his final years and his, by today's standard, unnecessarily early death in Ireland.

He was an amazingly tough and loyal man. Hero is a much abused word these days but this man was one of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark years ahead, 1 Oct. 2014

There are so many revelations in these well written essays. It should be read by everyone purporting to be English. We live in very dangerous times thanks largely to Labour allowing muslims to settle in UK in their masses and they out breed us. Then once the muslim is in a place of authority he or she abuses his position raping the system to make more money. Where will it end? I fear both David Abbott and I know. I am old and grey but I fear for my grandchildren's well being.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flying the flag, 25 July 2014

I am rising 70 and grew up and spent much of my life outside the UK. This delightful book covers an era generally omitted from the history books and an era I can remember my grandparents talking about. Many of the places I have been to, some I have lived in thus making it all the more pertinent. The tales of these hard working and dedicated men, and some women, are graphically related combatting the climate, the European traders (who did not want interference), and the locals. Some became arrogant autocrats but most were hard working with little support from the embryonic Colonial Office which appeared to care little.

Those interested in personal histories in the late 19C should read this. Anyone studying the colonial era should read this well written book. I could hardly put it down.

I bought this well known story for the pictures which imaginatively illustrate life in a girls school and the devil in the little devils! Oh to be able to draw like that!

A good read for the non technically minded. It certainly puts life into perspective. However it pushes the biggest scam of the decade:: climate change.

4.0 out of 5 stars Headtorch, 5 Dec. 2013

This review is from: Silverpoint Ranger X122 Headtorch
For more than 20 years I have bought headtorches as they have got smaller and more powerful with longer lasting batteries. This torch is OK but the switch is not as positive as I would like. I so like the fact that it light goes:: red, red, white with a good beam.A long press on the switch (if you can find it) switches it off.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fine soldier, 5 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
NO MAPS, NO MAPS, NO MAPS. How can someone write a history/biography and not include Maps? But for that it deserves 5 stars. This is an excellent account of a fine unassuming soldier. If you have read Defeat into Victory and think you know all about Slim, think again. This book covers his life before and after Burma. His name rather than Montgomery's should be known by all Brits as the most capable general of WWII.

2.0 out of 5 stars BBC hype and myths perpetuated, 7 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: A History of the World (Paperback)
I have not read the book but decided to ask it a few questions about things and eras I know about due to my age and background. The book failed on all accounts. It is well written and easy to read but on the subjects I selected it was economical with the truth missing the points. Then it goes on about the so called climate change - not history, but fails to mention the Islamic invasion of Europe in the late 20th and early 21st centuries - just like the BBC.

How can I trust the rest of the book, which was recommended by a fellow historian, if these flaws are evident in Part eight?
