4.0 out of 5 stars Quality story, 6 Sept. 2014
I'm mostly very selective when it comes to any literature. The worst problem of the majority of books is that they often are not very well researched or obvious solutions aren't taken to account in the story. Realism is a difficult word in the fantasy genre, but the word is here used to describe when the already set rules are followed. Too many trained assassins are afraid to kill, and street-wise orphans which have second thoughts when it comes to survival. Moon's artifice isn't like that. The setup and story are somehow predictable at large, but the details makes everything work wonders. Not every innocent survives through all odds, and unfavorable coincidence do happen (but not too often). I really love how to author let the protagonist and his allies be smart about how to solve different problems, and not just "go straight at them" and win because of pure luck. My few problems with the story are: 1) Too much supernatural (it's the little thing that makes a great story, the rest is just "background"), and i'm afraid he has to add more in the next book. 2) Too many "secrets" (like the "secret stash place" which they happened to "stumble upon" after a chase ), since these kind of "solutions" tend to devalue the others (since when everything is special, nothing is).

But the books was great and I look forward to the sequel (which I hope focus more on different alliances and their interactions, and less supernatural inflation of the story). I did love how the "bad guys" during the story really didn't know if their cover was blown or not.

2.0 out of 5 stars These guys have never played Last of Us, 2 Jun. 2014
This review is from: Watch Dogs (PS4) (Video Game)
The missions are mostly the same. The characters are horrible. And the protagonist is horribly bland. I had so high hopes, and mostly they are now crushed. I wish they could have created a believable story, and not a story where the writers push the characters all around so the protagonist could finish his personal bucket list.

And for the gameplay: The police are cowboys who shoots at everything that moves every time. They are nowhere to be seen when they are passive, but when they are pursuing you you have 5 cars at your tail within 10 sec. Its almost impossible to escape on foot without becoming a cop-killer and a mass-murderer. The driving system is horrible, most cars have no grip at all on the road. The NPC cars drive very slowly everywhere.

Stealth gameplay is very one sided. Everyone can see you all the time in the open, even when you move through a crowd. There is no way to infiltrate without moving from cover to cover (except blackout, which is cool but last very short).

This game should have:
1) Fewer enemies
2) Better driving system
3) More quality encounters (less shoot everything that moves)®
4) Better stealth
5) More diversed missions
And most importantly: 5) A much better story

If you like to solve your games mostly with shooting everyone, you can consider buying this. If not: DON'T!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 2 Feb. 2013

When I first read the first pages I thought that I had the plot figured out. There was an obvious bad guy and a typical "fight for independence" story. But J. Stroud is luckily smarter than to just write the obvious. It's nice to see that reality trumps fiction, that main characters can develop during the story. At first I hated this book because I thought I was reading a cliché story, but the ending saved the book. AND by the way: The book is really funny.

3.0 out of 5 stars I didn't finish this book, 21 May 2012
I didn't finish this book. The way the journey turned out was just too unplausibel to be fun to read. You just can't put a twist on every part of the hereos journey without ruining the spell. The Merrick caracter was a catastrophy. He knows things that he couldn't possible know without knowing magic (in a storywise very unbalanced way). Both the episode with the wizard (how could he have known when that was really, really old and nearly forgotten knowledge, and how could the church have known?) and the episode in the fortress (way too much could have gone wrong that Merrick could have relied on the heroes whereabouts and that they weren't killed). The whole situation with the witch in caught when trying to free the prisoner is also plain stupid ("of course" she can't use magic, "of course" a water boy alarms the supreme power of the church straight away). And the list really goes on and on...

A good story tries to balance coincidence and chance. A brilliant story shows that chance affects each side of a conflict, and that you can't really rely on it. You plan for both the best and worst outcome. This book (and the previous one) is about how the writer pushes the characters around the most unplausibel way and then shows us that the bad guys had foreseen that. But the previous book was much better.

I don't know how this book ends since I stopped after the hereos were caught (this really happends WAY too often!) and the goblins attacked. Though, it was much I loved in these two first books (Example: How the elves and dwarfs were described and treated by the writer.) But the way the writer pushed the characters ruined the whole story.

1.0 out of 5 stars Really, REALLY bad ending, 7 April 2012
This review is from: Mass Effect 3 (PS3) (Video Game)
This is a game that should have been a masterpiece. It had all the elements it needed, but somehow Bioware didn't know what to do with them. The combat is excellent, and the beginning is brilliant. And then comes EDI (also called HAL). The new companions are not good at all. The choices in the game are limited. And the ending is really, REALLY terrible. I wonder how someone can be so blind and not see it. It's quite obvious! The games Metacritic score from the users reflects this.
So, conclusion: The combat is good, the story is BAD, and EDI is really ugly.

2.0 out of 5 stars Terrible ending!, 30 April 2011
This review is from: Civil War (Paperback)
I really, really loved this comic, but the final pages ruined the whole story. It looks like the writer had to make a story in which the one of the sides in the conflict was totally right. In addition, the solution is terrible. But I won't spoil it for future readers.

Most of the story (apart from the ending) is brilliant, the story really shows how violence can escalate when both sides in a conflict mistrusts the other. But then the writer picks a side when neither of the parties in the conflict is right. One side wants total freedom and no control, the other wants full control and tries to subdue the other. If the writer only could find some kind of middleground for the parties. But instead he ruins the whole story. And the epiloge is even worse. It doesn't even show any understanding of how the ending affect the superhereos lives, and the consequence of their freedom. And the consequence for democracy.

I read this comic once. I will never read this again, or any sequels. But I'm curious about the previous civil war stories and will probably read some of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant game, 21 July 2010

A long and very fun game (or rather 2 games that feels like one). Some frustrating encounters with enemies you don't know how to beat, and I had find the information on the Internet. But overall it's brilliant with the best spells for mages ever made.

4.0 out of 5 stars A ton of quality and good dialogue, 24 July 2009

I love Firefly, but it lacks some realism. The conversations are excvellent, and the twists and turns makes the stories very funny and interesting. I just wish the serie had continued for several additional seasons.
