5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Freddie, 26 Sept. 2012

A very pleasent surprise to get something from the Queen stable which is genuinely new and exciting to watch. An awful lot of the footage most people will not have seen before. Okay there are snatches you will recognise but in these cases it will be extended beyond what was previously available. There is a lot also which gives us a great insight to the explosively busy 1980's period of Freddie's life.

The real skill in producing this release has been in avoiding labouring areas of Freddie's life which have been covered in detail before - his early years and his death. Also, quiet rightly, the emotional tears to camera of earlier releases, which at the time I am sure were genuine, are not duplicated here, rather a more reflective and no less respectful appreciation of the man that was both a fallible and normal human being and one of the world's biggest ever entertainers and which shows that almost 21 years have passed since his untimely death.

My only critisism of the content has to be the treatment of Paul Prenter, Freddie's personal assistant/runner of the eighties. He is squarely blamed by all and sundry as a bad influence on Freddie, the cause of many of the divisions in the band and the reason Freddie became so immersed in the gay club scene which ultimately led to Freddie cintracting AIDS.

Freddie's promiscuity is nobody's fault but Freddie's but its almost as if the band and others are saying "If Freddie had not got mixed up with Paul Prenter he would still be with us today". I have no doubt that Paul was bad news but Freddie was an adult who knew what he was doing. AIDS only came to light in the 80's but the rockstar lifestyle that Freddie led was never likely to end well.

I would highly recommend this to any fan and hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.

The Appeal
The Appeal
by John Grisham
Edition: Paperback

1.0 out of 5 stars Dull & Predictable, 6 Jun. 2012
This review is from: The Appeal (Paperback)
Predictably Dull! - Avoid - he has written far better fiction than this. Started counting the pages left after the inital set up of the story and hoping I would be proven wrong in my initial assessment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Battery Guzzling Elephant, 18 Dec. 2011
This review is from: Elefun (Toy)
Not a bad game, though it is a pain having to reload the few butterflies every two to three minutes.

WARNING
The biggest draw back is that it takes "C" batteries while most other games take AA or AAA. This means having to spend a further 60 on a decent charger and a set of 4 rechargeable batteries. The game itself was priced cheaply but add on the recharger and batteries and its very expensive as its unlikely we will use the batteries for other games.

4.0 out of 5 stars John Deacon Throws His Guitar In Anger!!, 8 Dec. 2011

Positives

Insightful commentry throughout the documentary by Brian & Roger in 2011 looking back on their career with Queen not all of which I'd agree with (Roger don't be so hard on the Hot Space album, its not that bad! Brian, The Miricle isn't one of Freddie's best compositions)

Nice selection of bonus material (I never knew John hurled his bass in anger at the end of the Knebworth show - would love to hear his reasons for that. You would think at the end of such a massively successful tour with one of the biggest bands on the planet he would be on top of the world. Just shows, we all have bad days at the office!!)

The documentary is expanded on what was shown origionally on the BBC and its obvious the amount of work the producers put into it.

Very fast loading disc!

Negatives

As another reviewer has correctly stated - while good, this is not as good as it could have been. The VHS "Magic Years" is still a far better historical record of the band's work.

The choice of Blu Ray Format is crazy - a double DVD would have made the material more accessible - The picture quality does not benefit in any way from HD as the source material is historic and not restored in any way. Also the cut down DVD release of this is clearly very unfair to loyal fans who may not own a blu ray player. There should be a triple play pack (blu ray/dvd & digital copy) made availble to give fans the versatility of how they can watch this material.

Sound in basic stereo - ok for what it is but why have blu ray discs and then not have 5.1 surround sound option? - rushed out for the Christmas market is why!

Some of the footage is repetitive and also the edits appear to contradict earlier releases. (Did they wear out the master tapes with the multiple redubs of March of the Black Queen or as previously indicated - Bohemian Rhapsody)

Summary

Very enjoyable for anyone interested in the band or wanting to know more about their work but a missed opportunity to put out a really decent product for die hard fans who will have seen a lot of this stuff already more than once.

2.0 out of 5 stars 5 star album gets 2 star treatment, 13 April 2011

Let me preface my review by saying that Sheer Heart Attack is a fantastic album.

My problem is with the "Remaster". Its lovely but.....Maybe its my ageing ears but to me their is no noticeable improvement on the 1991 Remasters.

Also the bonus tracks, while pristine are flawed in their selection. The first 3 bonus tracks are welcome because they are of the time period covered by the album. The latter recordings are a 2011 remix and a 1986 live recording which is available among queen already available catalogue.

Its a shame the band are milking fans with their new label with the new releases with little care or content control. A full Live Concert recording from either Hammersmith Odeon or The Rainbow or indeed a full BBC sessions double CD release would be far more welcome.

Have this 2 months now and so far no complaints. Has a much better range than my previous Lidl bought equivalent which used to eat lithium batteries and lose its outdoor temperature readings regularily. Looks great too and would double as bedside alarm clock if required.

4.0 out of 5 stars May the Farce Be With You, 4 April 2011

If you like Family Guy or Star Wars you should enjoy this boxset. The jokes get a little predictable by the time you get to the 3rd disc but fun nonetheless.

Shame the digital version of the film does not work on my Creative Zen player - seems to have been angled at the ipod market which I refuse to bow down to.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm in Love With My Car, 4 April 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am a big kid at heart so I loved this when I saw it. I bought this to use with my laptop. Looks great with cool blue headlights and red brake lights. The brake lights intensify when you move the mouse. Slightly smaller than your average mouse and with a shorter cable and certainly not as sensitive as a gamers mouse but perfect for what I wanted.

You'd only really miss the extra cable length if in an office environment where you might have to pass the cable from the back of a tower desktop on the floor.

Nicely priced and, with the exception of number plate sticker which comes off at first touch, a well made, fun, office toy.

My five year old loves this. The books in the series are written in fun rhyming verse and have a great way of imparting familar tales in a new way. Parents will enjoy sharing reading time with their kids with this and other books in the series. Hardback durable reads!
