The Northern Star Trilogy: Omnibus Edition
The Northern Star Trilogy: Omnibus Edition
Price: £3.51

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read, 30 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Surprisingly well written, keeps the attention even tho it's a doorstop, and the 'inhuman' characters are actually engaging. I wish the author would find out what 'decimate' actually means and use it correctly!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story, poor writing, 29 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Hellequin is a great idea, but sometimes the writing is so poor as to almost unreadable. He's particularly bad at conversations, and the language in the 'past' sections is particularly anachronistic. Just cos its fantasy doesn't mean it can't be well written (Tolkien, LaGuin?)

3.0 out of 5 stars ends with a whimper, 27 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having read all six volumes this definitely peters out at the end! Interesting ideas, sometimes loses its way. I think I preferred 'Fade Out'.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful elegy, 17 Sept. 2014

This review is from: Thirteen Moons (Kindle Edition)
Lovely, humorous, fantastic evocation of country and people. I loved it, and it made me sad at the same time.

2.0 out of 5 stars prefer the film version, 6 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Characters somewhat cardboard, dialogue stilted, one or two 'amazing' coincidences. One of the rare cases where the film adaptation is better than the book, cf 'Jaws', 'Bladerunner' and others. For a more interesting version of the alternate history relationship-with-the-dictator story see Summer Isles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Annoying misuse of decimate, 14 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A good and interesting account but a historian should understand what "decimate" means: it does not mean "nearly annihilated" "almost destroyed" or similar; it quite simply refers to a loss rate of 1 in 10 or 10 per cent. A simple thing to get right.

3.0 out of 5 stars Spoiled by minor things, 23 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you want brilliantly written characterisation and absolutely authentic maritime terminology, you need Patrick O'Brien. This is good enough rollicking stuff, and I'm sure most people don't care but it has spoiled for me by a number of irritating anachronisms, like 'have you got issues with me?'

1.0 out of 5 stars Story what story?, 17 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There is no story here - Apollo 11 goes to the moon and the crew see a red light on the surface. That's it. Not worth the £1.91.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not up to Ferguson's usual standards, 10 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A little disappointing; I am a 'man of the left', but I like Ferguson's work usually, finding him willing to make points which are difficult to counter from a leftist perspective, without his
falling into right wing dogma. Here however his hero worship of Thatcher has led to hagiography rather than analysis, and he does end up arguing she was right about everything. Disappointing.

1.0 out of 5 stars parallel evolution?, 29 Sept. 2013
This review is from: Damocles (Kindle Edition)
Please! We all know the "all galactic races descended from common seed" angle - but as another review says, this race has internet and under achieving love stuck geeks(that is not good BTW). Apart from physiology the big, really alien thing about ETs will be their social organisation & psychology - and that is what will be interesting. See "Left Hand of Darkness" (Ursula K LeGuin) for aliens whose way of life challenges our own earthbound concepts, such as gender. By contrast, this book could be about 2 different sixth form colleges in the same town, so little is the difference. First contact? Hardly!
