5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book, Fantastic Players & Excellent Artwork, 15 Feb. 2016
An excellent book that covers some of the greatest players ever. The artwork for each player by Josh Clifford is also excellent with all of the players instantly recognisable.

A must-buy as far as I'm concerned!

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful & immense piece of work is a fitting end to Samadhisound, 10 Nov. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
At over 600 pages this is bound to be a weighty tome - it almost justifies Prime Membership on its own. It is beautifully illustrated/curated by long-time collaborator Chris Bigg throughout and features Sylvian's penmanship from 1980 onwards as well as transcripts of conversations with other artists. It's a glorious walk through much of Sylvian's history right up to the end of Samadhisound Records and is illustrated with Bigg's own art as well as images supplied by Sylvian and the odd record cover.

It is surely to become a collectors' item in due course: Hypergraphia is published in a limited edition of 3,000 copies of which 500 were signed and individually numbered copies by Sylvian and Bigg available via Sylvian's own site. However, a further 50 signed copies are randomly include among the remaining 2,500 copies.

If I had one concern, it would be how long the spine would stand up to repeated read-throughs of the book. However, I suspect my copy will end up being kept very securely away from prying eyes.

One last note: the price I paid on Amazon is a steal: £39. The official website was charging £65 plus postage or £85 if you wanted one of the signed copies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Muse - Hometown band sound excellent on vinyl., 17 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A brilliant debut by a band from my home town (Southend, if you're wondering). The songs belie the youthfulness of the band and Conor Mason's voice is, at times, the voice of a pure angel & at other times the voice of a strung out angel craving that long overdue blast of coke.

People have compared NBT to Muse and I think that's fair but please compare them to the Muse that were great (Symmetry to Black Holes) and not the pompous arses they became.

Worth it for 'Itch' alone.

As for the pressing, it's white vinyl (at least as first) and it a nice piece of sonically clear plastic that provides an extremely transparent blast of the album nearly all the way through. Playing through both headphones & speakers the sound is hard & brittle when it needs to be and clear as a bell - typically in the quieter moments when Conor is softly singing.

Unfortunately there are a couple of grindy noises on the final fade out of my copy but that is a minor complaint and is what you put up with for vinyl.

So I feel a kinness(?) with this band & hope they do really well in the future

3.0 out of 5 stars Fine for listening but poor for audiophile recording., 7 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As a DAC outbound from my Macbook it works absolutely fine: it is easy to install (just plug it in and select it as the output channel in Preferences) and presents you with a relatively warm but detailed sound when played through a separates system or even by using it with your headphones plugged in. Just read any of the other reviews & they will tell you that.

However, I bought this to assist with capturing audio from my turntable and I'm a bit of a perfectionist about these things: fine & easy to set up as it was for outbound sound but, critically, the onboard chipset limits the audio recording you are making & significantly reduces the dynamic range as a result. If you know what that means, you'll get the idea and will probably avoid this as a result. If you don't know what it means then consider this: it makes your audio sound as if it was recorded by a monkey with a bit of string & a yoghurt carton. OK that is a little extreme but you get the gist. If I wanted that as a result then I may as well buy CDs rather than vinyl.

However, I didn't want that and so, to all intents & purposes this has become a relatively expensive (but fine) outward only DAC.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vinyl 180 2014 White Vinyl Release Is Worth The Money, 15 Dec. 2014
This review is from: Vienna [VINYL] (Vinyl)
This is a wonderful bit of vinyl. Whilst coloured vinyls are great to look at and are worth collecting for the novelty or rarity value, they often sound poor with distracting levels of noise & rumble that detract from the listening experience.

However, this white vinyl disc from Vinyl 180 & the accompanying 7" single, also on white vinyl, are great.

The vinyl is clean (next to no rumble or clicks), the sounds distinct & full, there is less compression than even the original vinyl release and it's clear they've used a 96khz or 192khz (or even analogue) master. I was fearing that they would just use the 16 bit/44.1khz CD masters from the 2008 release but obviously not from the frequency analysis I did and the evidence of my own ears.

This puts many of the recent coloured/fancy vinyl releases to shame - and I include Ultravox's own "Brilliant" clear vinyl in that!

Great sounding vinyl but - be warned - it is the black vinyl edition rather than the orange vinyl edition as shown in the photos. But that's probably good - the black edition sounds better!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Song/Rubbish Vinyl, 6 April 2014

Great song but this is one of the noisiest bits of vinyl I've ever bought: the amount of rumble is ridiculous so while the yellow vinyl is lovely to look at, I wish they'd just pressed it on good old-fashioned black plastic.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
. . . it was stupid of Amazon to pack two litre bottles of water with two vinyl records. The records are warped but are probably salvageable.

Amazon - pay more due care and attention to what you're packing together: heavy things & delicate things tend to not work well together.

The water itself is fine: tested a few drops to see how much residue was left after evaporation and there was next to nothing - pretty pure then.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't forget it's collapsible, 28 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I thought a portable water bowl was a great idea. However, when I used it with my dogs, I noticed that it didn't hold much water and they didn't really quench their thirst.

After a week or two I then noticed that it was collapsible et voila! It now holds plenty of water for a quick thirst-quenching slurp by both dogs leaving lovely smiles on their faces. At least for one of them - the other one's magnetic collar is still pinning him against the fridge door.

I must admit I felt a little stupid not having noticed that it was collapsible and have used this new-found wisdom in other aspects of my life. Now my telescope actually zooms in on faraway objects and hoovering no longer gives me a bad back - the wonders of modern technology, eh?
