Jackson Pollock: Black and White.
Jackson Pollock: Black and White.
by Jackson (Cody, 1912 - Springs, 1956) POLLOCK
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars A nice sized gallery catalogue, when still many of these works were still available on the open market, 6 Aug. 2016
This is very much a catalogue of a gallery exhibition - New York 1969. This was an exhibition containing many of the Black and 'White' works from 1951 and 1952, including many paintings as well as works on paper. There is an opening Q&A between Friedman and Lee Krasner covering Pollocks working methods during this period, as a way of introduction. Then each of the exhibition paintings is presented as a poured ( stuck in Seperate mini print, A5 - maybe) reproduction on a page with accompanying text. Then in a more now traditional style there are smaller grouped photos of the drawing / works on paper. One pleAsing aspect of the catalogue is the page size which is circa A4. If you are looking for a comprehensive survey of the Black works - the catalogue / book accompanying the Blind Spots exhibition at Tate-Liverpool and Dalles MA is the thing to get. This is really only essential for the ardent Pollock enthusiast.

Kandinsky (Masterpieces Collection)
Kandinsky (Masterpieces Collection)

2.0 out of 5 stars Many better Kandinsly books which do a similar simple job than this one, 15 July 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is page size wise a small book - A5 size perhaps. Though this book is mostly colour plates - they are not the best works in general and the text with details of each work looks like it was done on a typewriter and someone needed todo a final pass on the books layout/design.

Giorgio De Chirico: Myth and Mystery
Giorgio De Chirico: Myth and Mystery
by Various
Edition: Paperback
Price: £14.00

2.0 out of 5 stars This is on De Chircos sculpture - not his wonderful paintings, 15 July 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I don't think its clear but his concentrates on De Chircos sculpture rather than his wonderful early career paintings.

Kandinsky in Paris, 1934-1944
Kandinsky in Paris, 1934-1944
by Wassily Kandinsky
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars A deep survey intp this period but let down by majority of work being in B&W, 15 July 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very deep and thorough coverage of Kandinskys final phase, which mostly consisted of watercolours and works on paper. I love this period as the great man finally releases his own constraints and produces a massive volume of just very nice pictures. Regards the book and the works reproduced are very large in number, but most are in black and white with maybe only 20% in colour. Which is a real shame as this never does any colourful vibrant work justice.

Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars An unpretensious overview of Pollocks works - lots of good quality plates, 15 July 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Jackson Pollock (Hardcover)
This is the catalogue for the 1999 exhibition of Pollocks work in Dusseldorf. The concept is a simple one of bringing most of the Pollocks residing in German Museums and showing this with many of MOMAslarge collection of JPs works.(Note the book was published some years later).
All the works are presented with clear colour reproductions and fully in colour. The text is very easy to read and is presented more as a book than a catalogue with essays. many of the works are shown as double page.
Highlights include - The Deep, Unformed Figurestuuning double page spread of Number 14 1951, 25,6 from 1951, double page for both One;Number31 and Number 32 1950, One of the best reproductions of Out of the Web I have seen in a book, Numbedr 1A 1948, maybe the best version of Comet 1947 in a book. As unique content goes I would direct you towards the plates of the 1944 silkscreens and a double page spread of engravings I have not seen before. The works mentioned are maybe half of the total, which span JPs career.

Ad Reinhardt und die Tradition der Moderne
by Heribert Heere
Edition: Paperback

2.0 out of 5 stars All words and german words at that, 15 July 2016

This is essentially someones University thesis in a book. There are no pictures of work-just text. The text could be wonderful but its in German.
Is there books in the UK on Reinhardt with lots of pretty pictures?

de Kooning: A Retrospective
de Kooning: A Retrospective
by John Elderfield
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £48.00

5.0 out of 5 stars A monstor of a book. This is just about all you need to see and learn about this amazing artist, 15 July 2016
The shear coverage of the great mans work is so impressive. It may not be quite as pretty as the Phaidon bookbut its half the price and contains more works. This cover is whole career including sculpture and the essays are really interesting. This is the must but de Kooning book - unless you have £60 - then the phaidon book is a thing of beauty.

In fact 23, as one is not an actual pollock. Intermittent use of dates and Number 32 is dated as 1935!!!!!! No text just little pictures. I just waisted a pound. 🙈😢

Jackson Pollock : Paintings, Drawings and Watercolours from the Collection of Lee Krasner Pollock
Jackson Pollock : Paintings, Drawings and Watercolours from the Collection of Lee Krasner Pollock
by Lawrence Alloway Jackson Pollock
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Ok it's in B&W but once you get over that you will want to hug it., 17 Jun. 2016

I am so pleased this was one of my first pollock catalogues I picked up as it's probably the best, certainly pictorally than even the 1967 MOMA catalogue.

The catalogues jacket is a kind of soft cardboard with some lovely detail with the printing. There are 62 works each with a photo. Four of which are in full colour including, and whisper it, No.9 1950😉. These are mostly works In Lee Krasner Pollocks possession after Jackos 'accident'. Meaning that no or few drip paintings as these were essentially all owned by Peggy Guggenheim in exchange for half a house 🤔!!!! But what is shown is some really rare works from Pollocks very early years and latter Black pourings or Blindspot era.

Highlights are Black and White Triptych,The child Proceeds, The Debutante!!!! Search for a Symbol (in colour) No 4 1952 and No9 1950.

For some context this is for an exhibition in June 1961 so the main reference of the brilliantly informed notes by Lawerance Alloway - I don't think he wrote much else on Pollock, which is a real sadness - is Bryan Robertsons 1960 mega tomb 'Jackson Pollock'. So this long before O'Connor and even the CR. One nice note on the inside cover states that "some works in the exhibition are available for sale. Prices on applications" - a bit different now one suspects.

Ok maybe one for the hardcore rather than an introductory text. But if you fancy going deeper done the rabbit hole or just want a taste of nostalgia then this is my recommendation.
