5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, Just Stunning ......., 7 May 2017

This review is from: Avatar (Amazon Video)
What on earth do you say about one of the highest grossing film's ever made, its made close on $2Bn profit - and they deserve every Cent of it. Its a phenomenal Tour de Force.

You need to get past the whole fantasy thing, do so quickly, immerse yourself in the Plot and the whole emotional direction of the film. Its Classic Good versus Evil - and we all know how that ends - but its the journey there that's utterly stunning. Its hard - impossible - to adequately describe the superb job the whole Film Crew has done putting together an edge-of-the-seat plot line (even though you know the good guys will win rofl).

Astonishing visuals, brilliant acting, superb film craft - its hard to do true justice to this film. They are actively working on a sequel right now, with a further three in the works. Based on this film alone, I will buy all of them them sight unseen, such is the impact of this Stunning Film. Many Sci-Fi fans of the middle and older Generations will remember the Lensman Series of novels which became the Legend of Sci Fi even today - I put this on that level. This film series will be Epic.

Run - sprint like hell frankly - dont walk - to get the film, and watch a piece of Film Legend.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Car Crash-Movie thats supposed to be about a Plane Crash, 6 April 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Turbulent Skies (Amazon Video)
It kinda works ...... and kinda doesnt. Overall, unless there is a gale outside give it a miss. As in flight air disaster movies go ..... the flight of the Wright Brothers had more tension but at least they made it. This car crash movie doesnt get close to even a failed Disney movie.

Its treatment of disaster movies is for pre-teens, and a deflated rubber balloon has more tension. There is no question it steals ideas from other aviation disaster movies and strings the script together with .... frankly not a lot. The acting is wooden, pretty predictable, and definitely will not make a Hollywood short list. Doubt it would make a long list frankly.

If you got a bad Twister hitting outside, give this a go, otherwise get the paint can out, watching paint dry is more exciting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Clint Eastwood Western, in one of his most famous Iconic Roles, 5 April 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Arguably THE iconic Classic Western role, which also made Clint Eastwood a - really - household star. He was paid $250K, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly described three bums who ambled around the American Civil War looking for money. It was the third of a planned - and very successful - trilogy. Eastwood was paid £250K and 10% of the profits (big money for a film of this nature in the late 1960s). That was more than the entire budget for a previous previous film in the Trilogy, "A Fistful of Dollars". As a final sweetener he was also offered a brand new Ferrari - surprise, he took the job :)

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly describes three guys running around trying to grab a stack of lost gold - creating mayhem along the way; all in the middle of the American Civil War. Eastwood hates smoking, but he had to for this one as the thin cigars theatrically played into the role and character, were part of the job. On more than one re-shoot he was heard to mutter "you better get this Re-Take, else I will throw up before the next one".

This turned out to be one of the iconic Westerns of All Time, and is still viewed as "current" in its look and feel even today, 50 years later. Be terribly non-PC, get yourself a tin of thin cigars, a quality bottle of Bourbon, a box of red tip swan vesta's to light with the finger flick, settle down and watch one of THE Iconic Movies in Cinema History.

Wonderful Stuff ..... :)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Timeless Record of a Remarkable - if Bloody - Uprising, 4 April 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The amazing, enduring thing about this master piece documenting the Arab contribution to WW1 in the Middle East, is that it was made in 1962. Now 55 years old, it still tops the ratings, is still regarded as one of - if not the - best film ever made. An historical and cinemagraphic masterpiece.

Oh .... some folk can get political and silly about it, but thats noise for the dry academics, and the drama queens. This film is for posterity, and a record of amazing - if at times barbarous - moments in history. For all the latter, it was still a remarkable achievement by the Arab irregulars, and its this film, that ensures that does not get forgotten by the revisionists as time marches on.

The film-craft and photography are quite remarkable, even more so after the remastering to match with current 4K technologies. It is a true, if somewhat hackneyed phrase ...... " They don't make 'em like they used to" ...... If you are one of the newer generations who have not yet bought, or even heard of, this masterpiece of historical film-craft .... do so without hesitation. Just make sure you store away some copies - particularly burnt onto CDs - so you have them in your old age.

Its highly likely this masterpiece will still be top of the ratings even then. A remarkable film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable Pilot Skills Saved all 155 on Board ... Hats off to the Pilot !!, 3 April 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Its not everyday an airliner with 155 people on board crash lands on the freezing cold Hudson River; let alone the fact that all lived to tell the tale of a theoretically impossible landing. Its one of the most famous crash landings in aviation history, so a long rattling about the plot line it is hardly needed.

The take off and crash landing did not exactly take long, so the film makers used flash back techniques as they focused on the dilemma of the pilot, concerned that the authorities would not understand, and he would be blamed for a water landing. The film covers that angle well, and its a constant "elephant in the room" as the film progresses.

Real life disaster movies always have issues since the Public knows what happened. This one had a bigger problem as the whole incident was short from bird strike to the rescue, and broadcast the aftermath on just about every TV Channel on the Planet. The whole background issue is well documented, as are the Captain's concerns, together with an over-enthusiastic Official Lynch Mob after Sully's throat. As we all know, that angle ended well for him, but the film makers kept that angle going very realistically.

A well crafted film of a memorable incident, Tom Hanks as Professional as ever. The passengers were lucky to have such a remarkable professional Pilot that day. They broke the mold when they trained that pilot. To bring in a theoretically impossible landing and still keep the aircraft afloat ..... quite astonishing Pilot skills.....

Excellent film - enjoy :)

4.0 out of 5 stars A Modern Touchy Feely Ben-Hur .... Still Good Though :), 25 Mar. 2017

This review is from: Ben-Hur (Amazon Video)
Is it better than the original - no - definitely, indisputably - No.
All the elements are there - big bad Roman ..... angel like heroic hero battling big bad Romans ..... Sage trainer of Hero pockets lots of dosh. In all that it stays true to the original. The ending however can only be classed as a modern Touchy-Feely nightmare, that pandys horribly to modern concepts of all pals together blah blah ..... will not spoil it by going further here - watch the movie. For all that however, it is a very good film, worth the cash, and definitely worth a watch.
Just dont expect it to be - anywhere - near the quality of the Charlton Heston original, because its way, way, away from that. Charlton Heston remains immortal in one of his most Iconic Roles. Enjoy this remake for what it is. If you have not seen the Charlton Heston original go watch it - easy to find on the Web, after seeing this one, you will not regret it.

.... there is hardly more to be said about this film, other than to reinforce what has been said already with very (VERY) few dissenting voices. Its about as factually correct as you are going to get from a Hollywood movie that's made for profit, not historical reference and accuracy.
Best plan with this film, is sit back and immerse yourself into the plot lines and self evident skills at all levels and types displayed; never mind the interminable beat for best comment blah blah. Just view and enjoy a superbly made film, as factual as you are going to get for a commercial Hollywood movie, that is about one of the Iconic events of the 20th Century.

5.0 out of 5 stars The local Coroner is going to have to work Overtime, 15 Dec. 2016

Dear God :) ..... this is vintage Seagal in his Prime, with wall to wall bad guy's bodies, and that's before he warms up. He plays a hard nosed local detective, who gets real annoyed, as a friend gets taken down by the Bad Guy. From that moment on, its a case of how many bodies he gets through chasing the Bad Guy.

There is no subtly - whatsoever - there is no finesse - whatsoever ...... so those with a sensitive disposition I urge you not to watch it. The film ends with more blood on the floor, than the local Blood Bank has in bottles.

Frankly .... there is not much else to it rofl ..... you get the picture by now, so you'll Love it or Hate it; only you will know which is going to be true :)

5.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Generation Indeed ......., 14 Dec. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A rendition of Operation Frankton Dec 1942, when a small canoe borne force of Marines from Combined Operations, penetrated Bordeaux Harbor, with the task of maximum damage to the German Naval and Merchant shipping there. The sinkings were also intended to block the Harbor, and prevent its use against UK channel and coastal shipping and convoys. Churchill, after the War stated in his memoirs that the Raid shortened the War by 6 months with the denial of Bordeaux Harbor to the German Navy.

It is an amazing account of the Raid, and the mind boggles at the courage and determination of those who carried it out. The film is rather "gung Ho" for the first 60 mins, along the lines of "all the Chaps together having fun before bashing Jerry" ..... classic 1950s stuff for Cinema audiences of the 1950s who still had that kind of mindset about it all, never mind the realities of the Operation. Therefore take that element on the chin as the run up to the Operation in the film is a little over the top with "Gung Ho Chaps" et al lol.

However, do put that latter element to one side as Film Craft, and focus on the realities of that mission. The dangers were mind boggling, and the outcome beyond the planners hopes. The members of the Public who were alive at the time in the UK fighting the War, were not called the "Greatest Generation" for nothing. Putting. the film "glitz" to one side .... the Operation itself was astonishing, even for Commando Forces.

The Greatest Generation indeed .......

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding ....Simply ... Outstanding. Redford at his best, 13 Dec. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Natural (Amazon Video)
This is not a Baseball Film..... Baseball is the backstory ..... yet Redford brings alive the game of Baseball. That alone brings out the quality of this outstanding movie. Dont be mislead by the prominence of Baseball in the film, because the Baseball merely provides the backdrop to a wonderful story of personal relationships, that is as hard hitting as is the backstory. The combination of those two themes provides a wonderful film, extending through to - literally - the very last frame. Its little wonder Redford accepted the role in the Film, his character and temperament fitted his film role perfectly.

If you are not a sports fan, have no concerns, the film is much deeper than a simplistic hack-baseball film, in reality its nothing to do with baseball, despite the game's prominence in the film. Its all about life's lost opportunities, and how, sometimes, despite all the Will in the World, we can all get dealt a short hand. Redford plays all the clever twists and turns with great aplomb as he portrays a man who is wracked by lost opportunities, and bad luck.

Whether or not you are a Baseball fan does not matter, the latter is only the backstory to the extent, that even those not in love with the game, will still be entranced by the Film's journey. Superbly presented and acted by Redford, showing why his is held in such high regard in Hollywood. A not to be missed film, whether or not you are a Baseball fan..... a must see movie.
