3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 21 Dec. 2013
The Wolf songs are lovely but the orchestrations don't do them justice. The piano originals are infinitely superior. Beautifully sung though. My problem is Thielemann's Bruckner. The constant tempo changes, unwritten pauses, rallentandos, etc. just make the symphony's structure fall apart. There is another Bruckner 7 by him on dvd which is much better. This one just doesn't gel. No match for Karajan, Wand and Haitink.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Travesty, 12 Nov. 2013
A great and unjustly neglected opera - but this production doesn't do it any favours. Presented like an amateur village pageant it completely undermines the opera's integrity. A hideously inappropriate set, likewise many of the costumes, the dance elements caricatured. The only outstanding singer is Toby Spence, the rest are either miscast or poorly sung - Susan Bullock (admired in other roles) falling into both categories.
If you want to see a great Gloriana superbly sung go for Colin Graham's exemplary ENO production conducted by Mark Elder with Sarah Walker and Anthony Rolfe Johnson leading an outstanding cast.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rare Find, 5 Sept. 2013

An unusually fine performance of a 1953 live recording. It's certainly not 'hi-fi' and the orchestra disappears during the singing, so it would never be a first choice. But if you cherish wonderful singing that's what you get and the voices come over really well. The three principals are all outstanding: Grob-Prandl warm and fearless but the tenor is simply astonishing and sings Calaf with a refinement and impeccable musicianship simply unknown today (at least in this role). Coupled with Capuana's very broad tempi which help clarify even the most complex ensembles this is a must-have for enthusiasts of this opera - and of great singing.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Landmark, 5 Sept. 2013

An amazingly good recording from 1952 of a brilliantly enthusiastic company and highlighting the very first appearance on record of Leontyne Price destined to be one of the world's great operatic sopranos. Well worth investigating.

3.0 out of 5 stars A one-off, 1 Sept. 2013
Spectacular production and dancing but the music is so abysmal and as music is such an important ingredient of ballet it would be sheer purgatory to have to watch it again. With so many other fine ballets available to watch with music from the good to the great this one should be given a miss unless you are desperate to add such an oddity to your collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, 16 Aug. 2013
A thoroughly entertaining, delightful and FUNNY production which all the detractors on here should know it originated at Sadler's Wells by the New Sadler's Wells opera. I saw it there and thought it the best Mikado production I'd ever seen. So very pleased to see its transfer to Sydney with a delightful cast who are obviously enjoying themselves - as, indeed, I was.

4.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, 16 Aug. 2013
A splendid production, well sung and played with Renato Bruson outstanding. A brooding, powerful and dark drama that should be much better known.

The classic recording of Nabucco. Superb. Tito Gobbi at his greatest and Souliotis in her brief glory. Should be in every Verdian's collection.
