1.0 out of 5 stars Coogan's dream life story, 2 Sept. 2013
Honestly, it pains me to write this because everything Winterbottom and Coogan have done to date has been monumental. This, sadly, is a load of cock and bull.

It's horribly boring. Basically, a not very nice man makes a load of money by being the UK's H.Hefner. But just like the big H, Paul Raymond must have had a dark side.. nobody gets from zero to multimillionaire without hurting a few people and bending a few rules. But Coogan plays Raymond with more than a touch of Partridge aiming for the charming, slightly egocentric fella with an eye for the ladies. Most of the film is just Paul Raymond bragging and shagging. A bit of the film is the sad, sad story of how his self absorbed daughter ruined her own life.. but really, neither character is anyway sympathetic.

It's total codswallop. A Coogan wish fulfillment production.

3.0 out of 5 stars very two thousand and eight, 29 Sept. 2012
This review is from: Capital (Hardcover)
It's nearly great. Very, very nearly. The characters are, mostly, well put together. There are plenty of laughs along the way...but..but.. there are a few things which just dont work well. For example the parking attendant has nothing to do with the street.. she could very well have been a completely different short story.(And yes.. I understand she's there for 'contrast' but without a link to the other characters she seems totally incidental).

Or the Pakistani family.. I get the dad and his mum.. but his wife and one of his brothers are just not fleshed out at all. Most annoying is the idea that the Polish builder gets himself into a lather when he finds a hidden suitcase full of old tenners.. totalling half a million quid. They're very old notes and effectively worthless as they've been taken out of circulation. However, despite being depicted as a thoughtful and inventive chap.. he never bothers to look up the notes on the internet but worries himself into a moral quandary about handing it over or doing a bunk.

Still.. a very good read and Mr Lanchester should seriously consider a follow up novel based entirely on the Younts.

5.0 out of 5 stars too big for his boots, 10 Jan. 2010
It's simply a proper Eddie show. It's loads better than his past 3 tours. It's just like his stuff from 10 years ago .... which simply means if you (like me) you used to really like him and then became a bit worried about some recent lame stuff then you'll be delighted.. if you're a relatively recent fan you'll just be a sheep that goes Moo

1.0 out of 5 stars shazam, 9 Nov. 2009
This review is from: The Magicians (Paperback)
this was a very odd book for me.. firstly i don't get the whole potter thing, then through odd circumstances I've recently read American Gods and Norrell and Strange. So I've totally overloaded on 'wow, what would it be like if magic was real'

but this was definitely the worst of the bunch. for a start it's really two separate books. the first two thirds is a pretty boring story of how a geeky outsider finds out that he's one of the chosen few who can command magic and no longer has to console himself within the escapism of a sub Narnia set of novels. he then proceeds to 'find himself' and gets to bonk some hot chick and swan around with other dandies like he was in a boring donna tart story. the second book, in true post modernist style, is his adventures in the mystical fairy kingdom from the books he was always lost in.. who would have thought they were real all the time... there he fights some monsters, gets injured but makes it back safely.. having discovered the meaning of love

it's rubbish. the biggest issue, as always, is if these kids have so much power why dont they use it ? when they're in danger why dont they turn into flies, or atoms, or teleport away or.. blah blah... the other issue is that for page after page.. nothing happens..except... a few kids learn magic.. it's a ridiculously thin plot.. and finally.. the whole 'novel' in a 'novel' is so tediously dull that it's amazing it's not obvious from the start that the descriptions of Narnia will have some consequence.. oh.. they do... zzzzz

Reviewed as if you have seen the TV Show:

Of course the plot is massively simplified, but that just means you spend the film thinking.. 'oh they cut that bit.. oh they cut that character.. etc. etc.' In the end, the best you can say is that it's pretty slick but way too upbeat compared to the show

Reviewed as if you have not seen the TV Show:

Better than average politico thriller, good acting, smartly scripted.. a bit like a lot of other stuff.. but better than most.. didn't that bloke say that it wasn't as good as the TV Show ?

1.0 out of 5 stars very very funny, 23 Sept. 2009

What a brilliantly funny film. I'm way too dumb to ever read any of Mr Brown's books but I hope they're as hysterical as this film adaptation. Couldn't stop laughing the whole way through. A satirical masterpiece.

2.0 out of 5 stars not a patch on the book, 14 Sept. 2009
If you haven't read the book and you only have a passing interest in English fooball from 30 years ago.. it's not a bad film. But the book is a brilliant, dark story about a man with an obsession. It is a novel based on some facts. It's not a biography. So it takes you into an unusual man's head with an extraordinary power and viciousness. The film doesn't deal with anything so complex. In fact, it really has nothing to do with the book. It's presented as a straightforward 'rags to riches' story. The relationship between Clough and Taylor provides the main dramatic theme and the hatred Clough had for Revie is presented as the only motivator. But, of course, Clough's life, in reality and in the book, was far more interesting. So the film ignores the gloomy, alcoholic, bitter side of a brilliant but ultimately odd man and paints a too simplistic picture. Should have been much, much, much more 'depressing'.

It's not a bad film, but it's all been done before. Sexy couple fight the backstabbing friction between them to land one big con.. but, look out, they're up against all kinds of kooky nutjobs and can they really trust each other ??????

Like a nice pie that your auntie makes, that's just like the nice pie your mum makes, which was just like the nice pie your gran made. lol

The only issue with ITL is, do you judge it against the TV series or against other political comedy films.

Set against most other 'sardonic', 'aren't politicians a bunch of self serving bufoons/tyrants' type of films, ITL is a masterpiece. It's like a runaway train. The pace, the characters, the acting, the script. It's all brilliant. It's horribly funny, it's deeply sarcastic (a much underated form of comedy) and it's spot on with the WMD fiasco.

You could also measure it against the TV show.. but there's not much point. They were made for the UK home market, they were more episodic, more focussed on the horrors of Whitehall.

So for me, ITL is a spin off.. but it's in its own orbit and all the better for that.

... and to think I often used to see Mr Iannucci having a coffee in the Bar Rouge in High Wycombe when he was virtually unknown.. I always wished I'd said hello at the time.. now I really regret it..

After the past few absolute stinkers from Woody Allen, VCB is a straight up, funny, comedy of manners. And it doesn't matter that it's set in Barcelona, it could have been any 'artsy' community in the US, it's just a dramatic device to set up the contrast in the characters.
