1.0 out of 5 stars The names' Owen.. Grumpy Owen, 18 Jun. 2009
Hopeless boring 'international' thriller with a lead man who never deviates from his unremitting 'i'm really really angry and i'm going to do what it takes so get out of my way NOW' persona.

There a holes a plenty in the plot. The script is ponderous. The direction bitty.

We do get to jet around the world and the shoot out at the Guggenheim is cool... if a little stupid in the sense that it takes hours for the police to arrive.

But.. it's the stupid, portentious 'the world is evil and it's all those greedy bankers' fault' that grinds you down. That and Grumpy Owen's not stop Mr Angry face...

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't turn the tables, 5 May 2009
This review is from: Valkyrie [DVD] (DVD)
It's not a really bad film, but it could have been much better. There's just too many people and too much showboating going on.. not just from an eternally grim Cruise doing his angry stare stuff, but Bill doing his usual 'Oh I'm terribly sorry, seem to have er.. stumbled into a movie.. gosh'.. Izzard looking shifty and puffing on a fag.. and half a dozen other Brit movie stars stamping into the spotlight for their 6 lines of terribly important fame

It's too crowded, pompous and full of 'look at me.. I'm in an serious film... never mind that Tom Cruise is in it.. it's serious.. look I'm sweating and everything' hamminess.. not a patch on Downfall.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well, what would you do ?, 28 April 2009
It's beautiful to watch and a very real artistic treatment of a few soldier's perception (or lack of perception) of chaotic and brutal events over which they had very little control. And that's it. It's the 'little man's' view.. the hapless bystandter's view. It's extremely well done. It's poignant and very very sad. But as with all these things it's only one view. The perpetrator's view, the victim's view and the view of those who planned, sanctioned and excused the atrocity are all absent. It's definitely not a documentary and doesn't really provide any substantial, objective opinions about the Lebanese war. It's just a recollection, hazed by dreams and cultural backwash.. and as such is fabulously well done.. but.. so what? In the end, I didn't find the film all that affecting and after some time to think about it, actually think it's pretty self indulgent.

Dark City: Director's Cut [DVD]

5.0 out of 5 stars forgotten gem, 18 April 2009
I never saw the original so can't comment if this is as much improved as other reviewers report. But as a complete sleeper of a film (geddit?) Dark City is a real treat. The comic/gothic/sci-fi/40s/50s design has been emulated a few times but is done here as well as anywhere else. The plot unravels at a great pace. The acting, script, direction and special effects are all way better than average.
My only gripes.. Rufus Sewell has mad eyes and Jennifer Connelly's main talents aren't nearly on show enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars ignorance is bliss, 17 April 2009
This review is from: Milk [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
I really didn't know much about the real story of Mr Milk.. which meant I was really, really shocked by the ending (I imagined he'd been murdered by some lone nutcase).

But I was even more shocked by how much I enjoyed Milk. It's great fun, Penn does a fantastic job (for once an Oscar worth giving) and manages to get across a charming fella with a few flaws but a lust for life that you can imagine was highly infectious to those around him.

In fact, it's a pretty flawless film all round. Which, given that it's about the life and times of an American gay politician 30 years ago.. is all the more astounding. Great film.

4.0 out of 5 stars monkey see monkey do, 17 April 2009
The only criticism I'd have is that this isn't really a film. It's a Louis Theroux TV special or something.

Otherwise it's pretty spot on.. of course Maher goes for some soft targets. But.. it's all done in a very light hearted manner (except for the preachy ending when he tells humanity what to do.. even though he'd previously told us preaching was wrong).

There are some very funny bits (I loved the wacky American RC priest at the vatican) and a few salient points (Atheists are the biggest unrepresented 'minority' in America). And at the end of the day.. organised religion does an amazing amount of harm to human society (even if personal faith assists some pour souls) and the more that's done to highlight that and help get rid of it.. the better.

2.0 out of 5 stars cul de sac, 17 April 2009
Oh stop it... it's just one of those films you pretend to like. It's big and emotional and dramitical and periodical and.. dull... just dull. It's all grown up and screamy and sad and insightful about .. er.. marriage (hey.. guess what.. a lot of married people are unhappy with the way things worked out). It goes on and on and on and on...

But it's not as realistic as it thinks it is. For one thing.. there's all this super duper acting and feeling and shouting and.. where are the kids ? They're bit parts in mummy and daddy's little drama. And that sucks.

And Winslett is just not that sympathetic.. yet another woman too far into her own self and her own make believe world and her own mistakes (lady.. live with them !) to be just not.. adorable (and yes.. i know.. we're supposed to feel sorry for her.. but her overly artificial lifestyle and trivial issues preclude all pity).

Would have got one star except for the utterly brilliant very last scene.. the old, deaf husband hears his hypocritical, bitchy wife moan, once more, about how bad other people are.. and ... turns down his hearing aid to tune her out... that's the way to do it.. that's the way to get through a marriage

1.0 out of 5 stars Hope they can read a bad review, 24 Mar. 2009
This review is from: Inkheart [DVD] (DVD)
Mark Kermode went bonkers over this film on his radio show.. and he's usually not too far out.. but... boy did he get this one wrong.

Firstly the direction is ridiculously bad.. it jumps and stops and grinds and there's just no flow at all. Secondly the plot makes absolutely no sense.. when a couple of characters have the power to make anything happen anytime by just reading stuff... well.. you're left obviously wondering why they didn't just read 'and they all lived happily ever after' at any given point. Thirdly, Brendan Fraser is god awful. You might just like to watch this ludicrous rubbish to see his amazing range of facial ticks deployed for 5 seconds before every line.

The overall design is awful. (Goths in the Dolomites anyone ?). The acting is hammy (except Golum.. he's destined for better things). The script is leaden (please spare me writers telling me it's a hard lonely live being a writer). And the ending has to be the daftest I've ever seen. Utter rubbish.

2.0 out of 5 stars sadly unrighteous, 6 Mar. 2009
This review is from: Righteous Kill [DVD] (DVD)
A lumpen, obvious, 'guess who the killer is' with the most obvious switch in the world. Any other main actors and it wouldn't have had any attention. But besides being a depressingly ordinary film it is a real shame to see yet another lame vehicle for what a lot of people thing of as two of the great actors. (Although imho neither have made a good film for a decade).

Oh.. and the funniest thing.. there are a couple of scenes where bobby has to do some physical stuff.. play baseball.. run.. jump over a little barrier.. it's not him.. it's a body double.

Maybe they'll both come to their senses and sign out with something decent ... hope so.

2.0 out of 5 stars kids today, 22 Feb. 2009
This review is from: Role Models [DVD] (DVD)
A very odd film. It's mostly about a 35 year old slacker who has a midlife crisis and finds redemption through helping a socially inept nerd. So it's just like a dozen other movies. It is really funny with some very sharp and sardonic lines... but what's really odd is that the language and discussions on sex often take place in front of what appears to be a 10 year old boy. (Who admittedly is a foul mouthed little wanna be gangsta) As funny as it is to be 'shocking and real' it quite often left me squirming. But maybe that's me.
