An amazing piece of work involving an incredible amount of research. The breadth of the information contained within is unsurpassed and of enormous value to anyone engaged in genealogy. Original copies are now hard to find and very expensive. This reprint is a great source of reference for any Genealogist and a comprehensive overview of English history from Medieval to Victorian.

5.0 out of 5 stars Felling the Ancient Oaks: How England Lost its Great Country Estates, 9 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very well written and produced book with heartbreaking photographs of wonderful country houses and estates that no longer exist.
The causes are numerous, the tragic results are the same.
Makes you really appreciate what we still have. Join the National Trust and help todays special places avoid the fate of those in this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Grand Tour of William Beckford, Compiled and Edited by Elizabeth Mavor, 1 April 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
William Beckford (1760-1844), was the only child of an extremely wealthy family. His father was a sugar tycoon in the West Indies and his mother a granddaughter of the sixth Earl of Abercorn. Beckford inherited and spent one of the greatest fortunes ever made.
He went on the Grand Tour at the age of twenty, with his tutor Mr Lettice and was encouraged to keep notes on his travels. This slim volume compiled and edited by Elizabeth Mavor, is a beautifully observed and well written account of his journey and is taken from one of the five surviving copies from an imprint of 500, published during his lifetime.

Thinking the account too revealing of his inner self, Beckford burned the rest.
It is an extraordinarily honest account by a complex and passionate young man.
I enjoyed it very much.

Published in the Penguin Travel Library Series, 1986,(Paperback).

Marvellous!
As good as I remember it from 40 years ago.
Some of the Plots are a bit creaky, but it remains a well written, well produced and well acted gem, a perfect balance of Comedy and Drama and a fitting tribute to the late Mike Pratt.
Buy it, It's not on television often enough!

I really enjoyed this, as I hadn't seen it for about 40 Years.
The performance that stands out is Mickey Rooney as Puck, all the more impressive when you discover from the commentary that he broke a leg tobogganing during a break in Production and spent the rest of filming in a plaster cast.

Jack Warner allegedly threatened to break his other leg, when he found out!.

A cast of Hollywood Greats, James Cagney, Dick Powell, Olivia de Havilland, Mickey Rooney, an entertaining period piece in every sense.

I had no problem playing it on my multi-region DVD player.

OK - So the plots could be worked out on the back of an envelope, but after a hard day at work there is nothing better to unwind with then a couple of episodes of "Magnum PI".

Stunning Locations beautiful People and a Ferrari, more of the same from
Magnum, Rick, TC and Higgins.

Five star entertainment any day.

Anderson Estate, before I get too decrepit, I'm going to risk the descendants of Zeus and Apollo, for a dip in the turtle pool!.
