1.0 out of 5 stars A Which? Best buy - but not recommended!, 10 Jun. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this product as it was the top choice in Which? Magazine (Oct 2010 issue), however I'm not sure of the test conditions it was put under as I found it very poor.

As others have noted in their reviews, I suspect that a lot of issues had to do with the plethora of pirate radio stations in and around London interfering with the signal & causing the device to suddenly stop working.
I would continually have to unplug & replug it back into the cigarette socket in order to get it to work again - up to 4 or 5 times every hour or so. I ordered a replacement & obtained the same results.

When it WAS working I found the sound wasn't great, especially high frequencies which tended to sound distorted, this despite Which? stating that the sound quality for this item was 'very good'!
The volume levels were also rather low which with quieter music (e.g.: classical) made it very difficult to hear, however this is probably down to the iPhone playing out at a set volume when connected to an audio system via thunderbolt - the standard jack version might have produced louder results.

Overall, I could probably live with the product if it didn't keep cutting out, but as it stands I can't really recommend it.

Strauss: Vier Letzte Lieder (Vivyl) [VINYL]
Strauss: Vier Letzte Lieder (Vivyl) [VINYL]
Price: £13.78

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic recording of 'Vier Letzte Lieder' on vinyl, 4 Jun. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A classic recording of Strauss's swan song, which has won many plaudits over the years since it was issued back in the 1960s by EMI - now re-issued on vinyl by Warner Classics who have obtained the EMI back catalogue & probably intended as something of a taster for Elisabeth Schwarzkopf - The Complete Recitals 1952-1974 (2015 Remasters)

As to the product itself, my copy of the LP had a number of pops & crackles upon 1st playing, but these thankfully went with subsequent listening. The re-issue unfortunately doesn't come with any programme notes, texts or translations which might be something of a minus point for some collectors. However at its current price (around £10 at time of writing), it is still worth considering & will give many hours of listening pleasure.

Finally just to note there is no download card with this purchase for those also after a digital copy.

Glass Piano [VINYL]
Glass Piano [VINYL]
Price: £24.16

5.0 out of 5 stars Glass Piano - Vinyl edition, 4 Jun. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Glass Piano [VINYL] (Vinyl)
I was after a recording Glass's piano music on vinyl, the two main choices were between Glass's own recording Solo Piano [Vinyl] or this one.
I went with this version as it not only included all the pieces played on 'Solo Piano', but also included 'Knee Play 4' (Brubaker's own arrangement taken from 'Einstein on the Beach'), 'Opening' (from 'Glassworks') & 'Evening Song (from 'Satyagraha') - the latter two pieces only available on the vinyl version.
The NY times stated: "Few pianists approach Philip Glass's music with the level of devotion and insight that Bruce Brubaker brings to it, precisely the reason he gets so much expressivity out of it." and certainly anyone purchasing this record who is familiar with this repertoire is unlikely to be disappointed. The piano sound is perhaps a shade dry, but not uncomfortably so.

Also worth mentioning that the LP also comes with a download card - for those who would also like a digital copy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended - leaves marks and a strong static charge, 16 Mar. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I purchased this cleaner after reading about it on the web & seeing the glowing reviews it had received, but its difficult to believe that the product that I have is the same one as described in the other reviews.

I initially found it worked very well at removing dust and dirt from record surfaces, but noted my LPs developed a strong static charge after cleaning them which obviously attracts any dust back onto the playing surface.
I also noted that it leaves a faint mark where the roller has been on the record surface, which can be clearly seen under a strong light - I don't know whether this causes any detriment to the playback, but it is obviously leaving some sort of residue (see photo) on the surface which I can't imagine is a good thing.

Thinking that the product might be faulty, I returned it for a new one, but obtained exactly the same result. For the price asked (currently around £80) I expected much better performance and would recommend you spend your money elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great performances, but last movement of Oranges suite is missing, 26 Mar. 2014
I can only reiterate what others have already stated about this recording & performance, unbelievably now over 50 years old. The only slight niggle is that the final part of the Love of Three Oranges suite, 'Flight' is missing. This was the same for the earlier issue of this disc, so presumably it was never recorded. Don't let this put you off though, unless you're specifically after a recording of the suite.

3.0 out of 5 stars Maille Hollandaise Sauce, 14 Mar. 2014
It might be fine for other dishes, but for eggs benedict the 'touch of lemon' is rather prominent & made it far too sour for my taste.

4.0 out of 5 stars Days are gone - Vinyl review, 15 Feb. 2014
This review is from: Days Are Gone [VINYL] (Vinyl)
I really like this album, but I thought I better point out to those buying the vinyl that it doesn't come with a free download or CD copy of the album. Not a problem with Autorip, but if you bought a copy on the high street (like I did), then you will then need to fork out again for a digital copy, which is a bit frustrating!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great recording, but what have Decca done to the cover?!, 3 Mar. 2012
This review is from: Verdi: Requiem (Audio CD)
Whilst I can only agree with previous reviewers as to the quality of this performance & recording, this review is about what Universal Classics has done to the packaging!

Firstly, the item isn't as shown in the image & description, as it is a re-release on Decca. As you might be aware, Philips, Decca & DG now come under the Universal Classics umbrella. It seems that Philips as a label is being discontinued, so many of their recordings are now being reissued on Decca.
Unfortunately with this reissue, they have produced what almost resembles a cheap counterfeit copy. The cover image has been cropped in order (I suppose) to hide the original Philips banner, thus zooming it in & making it look like it was printed on an average home colour printer. The font on the back cover spelling out Verdi's name & dates is 'lopped off' at the top, as if the print cartridge was running out of ink!
Whilst you certainly shouldn't judge a book (or CD for that matter) by it's cover, its a shame that Universal have been so lazy in the re-design as it arguably makes the contents look 2nd rate, when it most certainly is not!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good performances, let down by very dry sound., 13 July 2009
These performances were recorded at Teldec Studio Berlin & whilst I have no grumbles about the playing itself (which is excellent), I find the dryness & lack of bloom around the string sound makes it very hard for me to want to come back to these recordings.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not groundbreaking., 23 July 2005
This review is from: X&Y (Audio CD)
Anyone who has enjoyed Coldplay's previous opuses is not going to be disappointed with this album. It is guaranteed to not offend anyone, but whether it actually deserves the accolades put upon it (as mentioned in the other reviews) is another matter. To my ears it simply sounds like more of the same, whilst taking the tune for Kraftwerk's "Computer Love" the track "Talk" seems a bit odd. To sum up, whilst certainly pleasant to listen to, this album doesn't bring anything new to write home about. It's just nice.
