I have to say i only got this because the song "Life is a Song" was used the final scenes of The O.C but when i took it home and listened to it properly i realised it was actually really good and Patrick is a really good song-writer; and as i took a chance on buying it without knowing anything else by him i'm glad it turned out well.
I'd catagorise it as a sort-of Country/Folk/Americana mix as the album has elements of Wilco, Son Volt, Neal Casal, Ryan Adams, Whskeytown, Gram Parsons, Matthew Jay, Nick Drake and even a wee touch of Hootie and the Blowfish in it - an amalgamation of them all - every song makes you happy.
Definitley try it out if you like Patrick's earlier cds or any of the artists i mentioned or even singer/songwriters in general - ones who have something to say, i promise you it's worth your while.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing!, 19 April 2008
This review is from: Time (The Revelator) (Audio CD)
I just had to write about the marvel that is "I Dream A Highway" the last song on this cd, if there's one song you hear in your lifetime make it this one! it achingly beautiful, introspective, spine-tingling - simply put Brilliant!! worth the price of the cd alone and it's a song that i have been listening to non-stop all month!!

The cd in general honestly is brilliant! but Gillian really has outdone herself with "I Dream A Highway"!

HIGHLY recomended!

4.0 out of 5 stars darius does well!, 22 Mar. 2008
This review is from: Back to Then (Audio CD)
I have to be honest i only bought this cd because i LOVE Hootie and the Blowfish and i found it in a bargin bin in a small record shop near where i live (only cost me about £3.)
I was very apprehensive about this as i had read a couple of reviews which said this was NuSoul, and that normally isnt my thing (also due to the fact that Snoop Dogg's singing on this cd aswell and he really annoys me), but as i sit and listen to it now i am pleasently suprised.
It is NOTHING at all like Hooties music, but from reading the liner notes i know Darius didnt want it to be. It's nothing terribly mind blowing or completely original but it is good fun. He set out to make an R'N'B record and i think hes done well, and to be fair he has such a good voice that i dont think it matters what he sings 'cause it'll always be good.

I'd say take a listen if (like me) you love Hootie's music and if you like a wide variety of music, that way you should probably be openminded enough to find something you like about it, something that draws you in; or simply if you like soul music in general. Granted this may not be to everyones taste but do give it a try as it is really worthwhile!

5.0 out of 5 stars He Can Do No Wrong, 18 Dec. 2007
This review is from: Up Front & Down Low (Audio CD)
Like everyone else that's reviewed this cd before me i was a bit shocked when Teddy decided to cover mainly old country songs, and only putting one of his own songs on the cd, i had thought it couldn't be as good as his last couple of cds, but man was i wrong!
Actually the exact same has happened with this cd (for me) as the last.
I bought "Separate Ways" not even knowing who Teddy was, and after, at the most 2 days, fell in love with it; I couldn't believe it when it happened again.
I have got to say that Teddy has one hell of an ear for good melodies and songs.
Fair enough every song (bar one) is a cover of old country songs, but the way Teddy has played and arranged the songs themselves has made them completely his own.
I've spent the last, maybe 15 mins, trying to think of a worthy adjective to explain to anyone who reads this review just how good the cd actually is - but you know what? i simply couldn't! Absolutely brilliant will have to do for now.
I was also going to say to stay away if you don't like country songs (and by that i mean old, traditional country songs) but because of the way Teddy has arranged the songs there is something in this cd for everyone - literally.

In my book Teddy can do no wrong and i know now that i will, without a shadow of a doubt follow this guy for as long as he is recording music!!

When you buy this cd i can guarantee you that you will fall in love with it! Definitely one of the best albums of the year!

Yet another brilliant cd by Teddy!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the most original cds of 2004, 14 Dec. 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I originally got into Johns music by listening to the chili peppers, and after a while i just became mesmorised by johns guitar playing and decided to look into his musical history.
I started with this album.
It honestly is the most original and honest sounding cd to come out for years, that original that you cant properly categorize it.
I'd have to recommend it though if you liked his earlier solo cds, as it sounds nothing like anything by the Chili Peppers. The only person i can think of to even remotely compare it to would be bjork in terms of originality and being able to turn their hands to anything and pull it off.
He's also one of the nicest guys you could ever meet!
I'd say it's worth a listen or two if your in anyway interested in the man or his music, be prepared to give it a couple of listens though at the start and you will be rewarded.
"The greatest musician living and working today"!!

2.0 out of 5 stars hmmm, 14 Dec. 2007
I know that John was *rather* high when he was making this - and i think it was his next album (Smile From The Streets You Hold), that he openly admitted he only made so he could get more money to buy drugs with, subsequently removing it from the market - but i just don't see how anyone can rate this album any higher than about 3 stars as it is most definitely not worth anything more, I'm sure even John himself would agree aswell.
I do absolutely love him and his music, i think what he can do with the guitar is mesmorising and completely brilliant (the chili peppers where only ever world class with John, or Hillel playing guitar) but i just can't recommend this album to anyone in any way, it's almost painful to listen to, there is hardly any melody or substance to it, it's pretty much just john strumming some chords and trying to link it with some incomprehensible lyrics.

If you want a good JF album to buy get Shadows Collide With People (the whole album's outstanding!), or To Record Only Water For Ten Days. They are the albums that properly show his musical ability and skills.

It saddens me to say this as John is pretty much my guitar idol but stay away from this album completely - unless you are the worlds for-most JF fan and you have to have absolutely everything he's ever made, even then you probably will only listen to it once.

5.0 out of 5 stars best album of 2004??, 21 Nov. 2007
This review is from: Bubblegum (Audio CD)
I know i'm a bit late in writing this review but it's better late than never.
I'm going to keep this relativley short and sweet.
Mark Lanegan has one of those voices where it sounds as if he's been smoking all his life and has probably drank too much whiskey - but as it turns out he's all the better for it..
It is a very dark album though as all the songs are quite brooding and slow moving, to some they might even be depressing, but once you give a good listen the full way through as a whole (it might take you a couple of listens even, but you will definatley not regret it) you will/should realise that it is brilliant and completley original that way and quite honestly if anything were to be changed it wouldn't have anywhere near the same feeling it does in the first place.
The best way to describe the sound of the album would be sorta modern day blues music (modern day meaning full band, electronic and synthed-up - there's even a punk-sounding song on there "sideways in reverse", but believe me that's far better than it sounds) combined with a bit of rock here-and-there. I think it's more of a winter sounding cd myself, but that hasn't stopped me playing it through the summer aswell (you'll understand that better when you listen to it). It is really hard to explain it properly but i would definatley recomend it if you heard and liked Mark's earlier cds, Screaming Trees, the new Soulsavers record, his work with Isobel Campbell, or even if you do like blues music itself...
As i said before though it is a dark album which some may find depressing so you might need to prepare yourself for it, but us enlightend folk who can appreciate it fully can understand its brilliance and how no other cd can/could ever match up to it.
With this cd i think Mark has definatley made the best album of 2004 in terms of musicality, song-writing and general feeling you get when you listen to it.

It's one of those cds that you will be reaching for in years to come - i'm still playing it regularly since i bought it just after it came out 3 years ago.
The only thing i regret is not going to see him when he was supporting this album, a mistake that i will not be making again!

Definatley click the Buy It Now button A.S.A.P!!
With this one you will definatley not regret it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars really good!, 18 Oct. 2007
I had to leave a review of this movie just because its soo good!
It's a really intelligent(sp?) movie and to be honest it is really kinda disturbingly graphic and gory but to be fair you are watching a horror movie so it should be expected.
Theres no point going on and on and about this, so i would recomend you watch it if you do like a good storyline, a good horror movie and if you dont mind some gore (which, as i said you should be expecting if you want to watch a good horror movie)
The acting is perfect in the movie and as i said the storyline and everything is top notch.
A brilliant phsycological thriller/horror.

i definatley recomend you check this one out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Something Extraordinary, 10 Jun. 2007
I actually got this cd by accident. i headed up to the tills to pay for an offspring cd in "Sanity" years ago. i got home opened the box and this cd was there, i thought id give it a try anyways before i took it back to exchange it for the offspring cd and to be honest i wasnt all that impressed, i put that down to the fact that i was far to young to know truely kick ass music when i heard it.
In the end anyways i took this one back and got the offspring one and 'went back to reality' but it was when i got into the Foos first album (which i think is probably the best cd they'll ever make) that i thought i would invest in this, as i had heard lots of good things about it. As soon as i put it on 'Stacked Actors' hit me hard making me think "where the hell have i been?" and to be honest the whole album is like that, simply put... it makes you happy no matter what mood you're in!
Listening through the album as a whole leads you to a song that i think is the second best song (only just behind Everlong!) the Foos have ever recorded - M.I.A.
The album is very summery sounding as its all sorta light and breezy and jammed full with some excellent songs. Make sure though that if you do listen to the album as a whole you dont miss out on M.I.A as it truely is kick ass and caps off the album perfectly!
It doesnt really sound like the rest of the Foos records when you compare them but dont let that put you off, if you appreciate all kinds of music you're sure to be open-minded enough to like this cd, just take it as it is - a brilliant cd, a cd that any other band can only dream of making!

5.0 out of 5 stars An "old-fashioned" great album, 17 April 2007
This review is from: Nevermind (Audio CD)
I've just recently come back across this CD as i was absent mindedly looking for something to listen to earlier, and even in all these years it still sounds as fresh and exciting as it did when it was first released.

I admit though, that i did get a bit bored of it a few years ago and i shoved it to the back of a pile of my CDs (with other Nirvana CDs too) and eventually it just ended up gathering dust, but when i put it on my Hi-Fi (for the first time in a good 2/3 years) and turned up the volume - it was like i had just discovered it for the first time and i was reminded just how good this was, and how all the fuss that it generated at the time was justified.

It definitely injected a sort of realist aspect into music of the time, as Kurt, Krist and Dave proved that you didn't need to have stupidly long guitar solos and stupid hairstyles to play good songs. It brought music back to the basics. This band, and album, showed people that writing about sex, drugs, women, cars etc. wasn't always a prerequisite for rock songs - nor that having a preened appearance, make-up and tight clothes would make you popular or somehow influence the popularity of the music itself.

Nirvana made a kick ass album with a diverse mixture of songs that appealed to everyone and anyone, that is why i think it has lasted this long and people still reference it when listing all the great albums of the last 10/20 years, or even just their most favourite CDs, because it truly is one of the best CDs released in years. Nevermind's impact and reach since its release has ensured that it certainly wont be forgotten by anyone that's had the pleasure of listening.

Surely what every band wants to do with their music/CDs is to have created some songs that people will still be listening to years down the line, and with this album i know for sure that i will.

Buy this CD if either you want to see what all the fuss was about 15 odd years ago, or just simply if you want to hear some good music get this CD. It's better late than never.

It is one of the few CDs in existence today that really does merit the "classic" tag.
