1.0 out of 5 stars Rubbish!, 4 April 2011
This review is from: Stone [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Being the huge Bobby DeNiro and Ed Norton fan that I am, it pains me to say that this is one of the most depressing, boring and just plain rubbish films i've ever seen - and i've seen a hell of a lot of films!

It's not that any of the actors are particularly bad, it just doesn't go anywhere. It's start with DeNiro and Norton sitting across the table talking to each other and continues this for virtually the entire film - except for the parts where Deniro inexplicably shoots off to bang Milla Jovovich?!

And by talking I don't mean Tarantino-style scriptwriting that keeps you gripped throughout, I mean just very boring talking.

There have only been about 20 films in my lifetime that I have turned off halfway through having given up all interest of ever seeing what happens at the end and sadly this is one of them. I did fast-forward about another 20 mins just to see if anything livened up but it just showed more scenes of these (in my opinion) legends sitting across a table talking to each other - and after an hour of this already I could cope no more, so off it went!

It's a sad reflection that two of the other films on my 'abandoned mid-way through watching' list are 'Righteous Kill' and 'Meet The Fockers' - both starring my idol DeNiro!

Such a sad, sad shame.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Arrived yesterday!!!, 30 Mar. 2011
Mine arrived yesterday and can I just say "WOW!"

The picture is absolutely stunning, the extras are quite frankly the best ever released and the sound is fantastic!

But the best thing??........the walk to the Blu Ray player midway through each film to change the disk over!

What a thoroughly exhilarating experience this was! My family and I made a bit of a day of it actually - got our walking boots out, packed our rucksacks with emergency provisions in case we got trapped in severe weather along the way, took a picnic......it was great!

During the disc change for The Two Towers, we even used the opportunity to help with our fitness by jogging to and from the TV.

And by the time we got to The Return Of The King, we'd invited all our friends and neighbours around so we could all participate in the enjoyable walk and absorb the delightful views along this most lengthy of journeys.

It even comes with a warning sticker on the front stating 'Anyone with a weight problem or of a lazy disposition should refrain from purchasing this title as the makers hold no responsiblity for any Heart Attacks or respiratory failures caused whilst changing from Disc 1 to Disc 2'.

Phew - good job they added that because judging by some of the 1-star reviews on here, the ambulance service would've been working overtime that night, let me tell you!

I for one would like to congratulate Peter Jackson and the makers of this boxset for bringing something new to the Blu Ray experience and helping fat, bone-idle, home entertainment viewers all around the world to bond with their families, get fit and build relationships with their neighbours!

What a truly remarkable achievement this boxset is!

Sony MDR-J10L Over Ear Clip Style Headphones
Sony MDR-J10L Over Ear Clip Style Headphones

2.0 out of 5 stars Fell out of my ears for 6 months then died!, 1 Mar. 2011
Went with these for two reasons:

1) They're Sony.

2) They looked like the kind of style that have been specifically designed to stay on your ears when exercising.

Unfortunately they failed me for two reasons:

1) They broke

2) They kept falling off my ears when exercising.

So i'm finding it very hard to give a decent recommendation to these headphones considering they failed me on both points. The two stars are because the sound wasn't too bad on them, but when you spend half your time shoving them back in and frustratingly trying to bend them into a shape that will actually keep them there, the sound quality is pretty irrelevant.

Terrible design and a waste of money.

2.0 out of 5 stars An Iron Man film..., 17 Feb. 2011
....with hardly any Iron Man in it!

I like Jon Favreau but lets face it, he got a little carried away with his funny roots on this one and made it more into a comedy about Tony Stark.

I'm a fan of all the actors in this film - Downey, Rockwell, Rourke, Johnansson - but there is nowhere near enough action in it for a superhero movie.

Great effects but sadly disappointing in all other areas. Would be a drag to have to sit through this one again unlike the first one which is totally rewatchable.

The funniest series i've seen from America in years!

The cast are all brilliant and the language and insults from McBride come so quickly, instant rewatches are required.

So glad they've done a second series cos this is an absolute gem!

The fact that it's still relatively unknown is bizarre because once word of mouth gets around, this will become a must-watch series between your mates guaranteed!

Brilliant!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great listen..., 12 Jan. 2011
A brilliant set of discs that will have you chuckling all day long.

The star is Karl Pilkinton though and strangely, the biggest disappointment is Ricky Gervais. Pilkinton is a genuine pleasure to listen to, with his crazy yet so simple solutions and suggestions on everyday life, as is Stephen Merchant who just casually keeps feeding Karl the topics and lines with which he can then let his mind wander in all manner of directions.

Sadly then you've got Gervais and his over-the-top high-pitched squealing and laughing which after a while becomes as grating as Janice from 'Friends'.

Don't get me wrong, I like Ricky 'The Actor' (Extras, The Office) but Ricky 'The Person' can be extremely annoying - none more so than on these discs. His constant interrupting of Karl when he's in full flow, just so he can repeat what Karl has just said only now in a high pitched voice, therefore reiterating to the listener just how funny it was (as if we're too stupid to hear it when it comes from Karl's mouth) get very frustrating after a while.

He also tries to make Karl look more stupid than he actually is by trying to outsmart him with stuff he's read in a book somewhere, when it's actually Karl's outlook on things that (some of the time) actually make a lot more sense and is by far the more entertaining to listen too.

Merchant comes across as a genuinely intelligent guy who counteracts Karl's stories perfectly, whereas Gervais simply comes across as a smartarse trying to make the stupid kid in the playfround feel a moron purely to make his mates laugh.

Overall a great set of discs but loses a star for me due to the annoying Ricky Gervais. If it was just Merchant and Pilkinton, this would be Comedy Gold!

This review is from: Piranha 3D (Blu-ray 3D) (Blu-ray)
I wasn't expecting much from this film but I have to be fair, it is one of the most entertaining films i've seen in a long time.

It doesn't pretend to be anything more than the premise allows - a huge group of half naked hot birds getting ripped to pieces in some of the most inventive and funny ways you can imagine.

It's got Doc Brown, Marsellus Wallace and Hooper (from Jaws) in it and everyone from Eli Roth to Kelly Brook are in there getting eaten, naked or simply 'medieval on your ass' and it's funny as hell in the process.

Great film!

Probably one of the best Serial Killer movies ever made.

Great cast, great style and the best ending to a movie in the past 20yrs.

Blu Ray looks fantastic and has brought all the special features over from the 2-disc DVD plus a few more bits.

For anyone who loves the film, this Blu Ray is an absolute must own!!

Brilliant!

3.0 out of 5 stars Let's get this straight....., 17 Jun. 2010
....The Pacific is not rubbish - but nor is it brilliant.

The biggest problem with The Pacific is the extreme directions each episode takes us. Just when it gets going, it throws in another boring episode that makes our interest sink like a brick.

The fact is, people want to see action, plain and simple - and there's no denying that the action seen here is outstanding. The battle scenes are brutal, gruesome and really leave your heart pounding. In my view, some of the action is shot slightly better than in Band Of Brothers and genuinely leaves you feeling relieved that it's all over after each scene. They really are some of the best war scenes ever put on film and for the 4/5 episodes including the action you'll be genuinely thrilled.

But then unfortunately you've got the other episodes...

The beauty of BoB was that you really did care about the people you were watching. The viewers wanted to see the lads from Easy Company get through the war and get home to their families. We enjoyed watching their banter and how these boys bonded through such awful years and took heart at watching them slowly lose parts of their souls but still be able to pull it together when their brothers needed them. And even in episodes that were a bit slower, it didn't matter because we had come to know these characters so well, we just enjoyed being in their company.

But herein lies the problem with the Pacific. It's only based around 3 main characters and everybody else are just background characters. One episode will concentrate on one of the men, then it will switch to another in the next episode, then another etc etc... It makes for very disjointed watching.

One of the men - John Basilone - was one of the most highly decorated soldiers to fight in WWII, yet he is shipped home in the 3rd episode??!

And two episodes focus purely on two of the main characters falling in love - with no action at all!!

This is where Hanks and Speilberg have found themselves drifting a little off the mark. The Episode in BoB in Bastogne (personally my favourite episode) where the medic meets the nurse and they share a little chocolate flirting, it was sweet, brief and fitted nicely amongst the action soon to come.

But to dedicate an entire hour to to lovey stuff??!

If they had spread the action/romance equally throughout the episodes it would've been much more bearable. Same goes for each of the 3 main characters. They way they've done it just means you end up feeling pleased/disappointed/pleased/disappointed etc etc.

I would predict the interest in each episode as follows:

Episode 1: Ok
Episode 2: Ok
Episode 3: Boring
Episode 4: Boring
Episode 5: Brilliant
Episode 6: Brilliant
Episode 7: Brilliant
Episode 8: Boring
Episode 9: Brilliant
Episode 10: Rubbish

It's not right that fans of BoB are put off by people rating it 1 star on here because that is not true. Yes it's not as good, but if you prepare yourself for that in advance you may even enjoy it a bit more.

Like I said, it is neither consistantly rubbish nor brilliant but I would definitely suggest you at least give it a go.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great fight scenes but..., 27 Mar. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Although a good film, I wouldn't say it's as brilliant as some of the reviews on here. The fight scenes are good but the rest is distinctly average. Some of the acting is awful and personally I thought the end fight was disappointing in comparison to some of the fights earlier in the film.

Donnie Yen is great but again i've seen him do better (his work in Hero was better) but his martial arts skills are second to none.

It was enjoyable and definitely worth buying for this price, but those of you that are into their Kung Fu films as much as myself shouldn't expect the classic that some people are portraying it to be.

The Blu Ray quality is decent enough but not outstanding. I'd say the DVD of this would probably suffice. Bit grainy in parts.

Overall decent film but no masterpiece.

7/10
