Praktica CN 12x32 Monocular - 12x Magnification
Praktica CN 12x32 Monocular - 12x Magnification

5.0 out of 5 stars See more stuff at a distance with magnification that slips into a pocket., 25 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a really usable monocular ideal for spotting boats at the seaside, or slipping into a pocket when going out at night for some surreptitious astronomy or birdwatching. I think the 12x magnification is practical: you can definitely see more than with the naked eye with practice, and the 32mm aperture keeps the image bright without making the instrument bulky or unwieldy. Much more magnification and you would want a support of some sort. I love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wholesome adventure for the whole family, 25 Oct. 2015

This review is from: Dinotopia [DVD] (DVD)
I really enjoyed this family-friendly adventure miniseries. Full of mystery, talking dinosaurs(!), strange power gems of unknown origin and many little touches of wisdom that might keep adults interested ("every raindrop raises the ocean"). Basically it's a really heart-warming story with only a few scary bits where younger children might want a reassuring cuddle. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars An anime like no other, 25 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the most astonishing anime I think I've ever seen. With a deliberate downbeat setting in rural Japan, Ginko the Mushishi (bugmaster) can see strange spirit creatures that few others can see, solving the bizarre problems they (sometimes inadvertently) cause. If you liked the shinto elements of Spirited Away, but are looking for something slightly deeper and longer, this series might just have you spellbound. The look and sound of the anime are consistently entrancing and the problems complex and thought-provoking. Japanese people sometimes express surprise that a westerner would like this, as it is very particularly Japanese, but if you love Japanese culture too please give this a try! Just don't expect the usual sugar-rush J-pop or giant robot showdown - this is a much quieter affair.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nearly perfect practice amp for bedroom rockstars., 25 Oct. 2015
I am delighted with mine. The only reason it dropped a star was because the battery cover on mine broke rather quickly. Maybe you will be more careful than me (and in any case a mains power supply might be more practical for you than running it off batteries), and otherwise it is a perfect little amplifier for practicing bedroom rockstars. The built-in tuner works well, and the overdrive and headphone socket make it very usable. This would make a perfect Christmas present for someone!

4.0 out of 5 stars The rise of scientific astronomy, 17 May 2015
A historical account of the rise of astronomy, written from a very human perspective. You will probably enjoy hearing about what some of the characters well-known from textbooks, like Galileo Gallilei, were actually like. For example the full story is told about how his run-in with the Catholic Church was largely avoidable and not as sometimes presented an inevitable conflict between science and religion, but more a result of him getting into scraps with old-guard Aristotlian academics! Very readable.

Celestron Star Pointer Telescope 5x Magnification Finderscope Replacement

2.0 out of 5 stars Avoid if at all possible!, 31 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Under normal circumstances I would say avoid this at all costs, the only sensible exception being, as has been noted elsewhere, when you are actually replacing something worse. I am working on getting a typical "department store" type telescope (which actually has half-decent main optics) into a usable instrument for a friend, and by cannibalising this with what was already present I have just about managed to cobble together something that is just barely better than lining up the main tube by eye. So unless you are doing something similar, save your money and don't be disappointed. Not Celestron's finest moment!

1.0 out of 5 stars don your tinfoil hat or avoid, 15 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Hunt For Zero Point (Paperback)
Conspiracy theory nonsense: riddled with factual errors, hearsay, and ignores dead ends to instead conflate them with some other part of "the story" to keep the narrative going. Easier to face facts that there really is no conspiracy, mostly it was just vapourware and wishful thinking!
