2.0 out of 5 stars Great for a week, 6 Aug. 2015

Worked great for the first week then lost its mojo. I repositioned the blade and it was amazing, better than before- for a few hours- then back to endless turning and it being difficult to get a point and when I added more pressure... Snap.

3.0 out of 5 stars Christmas cracker clutch pencil, 18 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
KOH-I-NOOR has a great heritage. If you see one of their clutch pencils from the past 100 years, you will not fail to be impressed by the quality and design of these. Just like most other modern versions of everything- now we only have the choice to buy their cost-cut cheaptastic efforts. It is light, not plastic thankfully, but feels cheap none the less. The clutch mechanism does work, but again- it looks like they made it from the 'most affordable' material possible and use a weedy spring in there. There's nothing satisfying about using it. It holds up and writes though. The Staedtler Mars clutch pencil of similar price range (also a lightweight plasicy modern counterpart) whilst I don't like the downgrade in materials, it does have a firm and sturdy clutch mechanism. KOH-I-NOOR need to up their game. Their pencil feels like a Christmas cracker toy in comparison. And this is in comparison to what feels like a no-name brand copy of the original.

Not all customers want cheap. Cheap is not best. Have some respect for your brand.

3.0 out of 5 stars Improved design needed, 18 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I wish KOH-I-NOOR would charge a few pounds more and use better materials for a more luxurious feel. It could be amazing, instead it's average. The head unscrews so I have to keep tightening it as I write. Sometimes the lead moves in slightly when writing also and so it can have a loose feel when you want it to be sturdy and tight- oh- let me screw the head back again.

Great looking pencil. The clip can be removed. Nice small size. Then there's the sharpening downfall. You unscrew the end cap sharpener and insert the lead into into the claws. Then as you turn, then lead turns with it- so it may appear the sharpener is not working. This is poor design. You have to cap your thumb over the end where you removed the sharpener and apply pressure to stop the internal cylinder holding the lead from spinning with every turn. Or extract enough lead from the writing end to hold onto while you turn the sharpener (but risk snapping the lead if you're a little heavy handed). You can buy a separate lead 'pointer', and to use it you will have to hold your little finger on the end cap of the pencil to stop everything spinning with your turn. It's fine when you get the knack- but all this hassle to sharpen?

Paper is smooth and thick. Well bound. Just a little on the thin side with regards to amount of sheets..

3.0 out of 5 stars So shiny- ow my eyes!, 16 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Ok for scribbling notes. Only an executive of the bargain basement store would have this. The cover is so shiny! Do they think shiny makes it look expensive? Imagine the material on a Vegas 'dancers' pvc bra- with a lizard print embossed. A matt finish would be a lot better. Paper is of reasonable thickness. One step up from the type you get in a cheap pad but nowhere near luxurious.

Standard Mead. Thinnish paper. Note the cover is different now, it's no longer red and rather dull in comparison.

3.0 out of 5 stars I wouldn't buy another, 16 July 2015

Not terribly impressed. Paper is of excellent quality but the book is cheaply made. The pencil holder was sewn on crooked and the linen is coarse. It looks like it was rushed through production with little regard to finish.

3.0 out of 5 stars Didn't live up to the hype. Well, pencil world hype, 9 Jun. 2015

It just didn't do it for me. Not quite dark enough compared to other B's. Nicely finished but the design is a bit boring. A bit uninspiring all in all. And difficult to get hold of. Buying singles like this is no way to go either.

3.0 out of 5 stars HB masquerading as a B?, 9 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Nicely finished and of a good quality however for a B this is particularly light and more akin to your average HB. It lasts well between sharpens likely due to it being a harder graphite- like an HB. I might try the 2B to see if it is any darker.

The hunt for the perfect pencil has ended here (for the time being). I came from using the super expensive Blackwing 602. I enjoyed its smoothness and dark lines. The Tombow 8900 B can be thought of as the poor mans BW 602. The graphite is very similar, just as smooth and dark (and needs sharpening just as often which is a downside for both), just with no frills- and a fraction of the cost. I'm on my 2nd box.
