This is an exceptionally important book by an academic and social activist who has worked tirelessly to safeguard at-risk young women and girls from FGM. I found the review at the foot of the page not only offensive but a perfect exemplification of the warped thinking that helps foster the conditions for FGM to continue.
FGM is everyone's business. It is a human rights problem - one of the worst on the planet. You do not have to 'live in Africa' (as the reviewer suggests) in order to understand how morally abhorrent it is. Further, never forget that the movement to combat FGM originated among strong, fearless African women who refused to allow their daughters to be cut. Hilary Burrage's book is another weapon in their armoury. She deserves the greatest credit and the widest readership.
