James Robertson Justice: What's the Bleeding-Time?: A Biography
James Robertson Justice: What's the Bleeding-Time?: A Biography
by James Hogg

1.0 out of 5 stars JRJ - the biography, 24 Dec. 2009
A disappointingly poorly written book.

It really required the services of a good, or even decent subeditor. To take one example, but there are many others - a reference to the actress Brenda de Banzi (incorrect) is immediately followed by a reference to Brenda de Banzie (correct) on the very next page! It has the feel, if not the appearance of a scissors-and-paste job. JRJ deserves better than this. Not recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars French fancy, 28 July 2009
This review is from: Ravel (Hardcover)
This is a short book, nominated for a major book prize. It did not win, so ones must conclude that the winning book was something out of the ordinary indeed. This is a fascinating "faction", a building of a plausible narrative about various seminal points in the composer's life. The need to do this comes from the fact that there is little information about Ravel's life, bar the bare bones. He left only his music, no diary, nor any life partner male or female. Those whom he knew declined to share their memories. For any one interested in Ravel, the person, this is an indispensable book. It must have been very special in French, as the author is well served by the translator. Cannot recommend this too highly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Memories of childhood, 28 July 2009
Having grown up in North Belfast, I found the book fascinating, revisiting as it does areas I can recognise and identify with. My only reservation is that at three times the length, and ten times the number of photographs it would still be too short.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don McLean, 4 Jun. 2009

Well crafted songs, fine memorable music lines and a pleasing voice filling a complete album. What more could anyone want? Good to have these songs collected together in one place. Most enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Neil Diamond - the hits, 4 Jun. 2009
Most of the big hits are here. However, I am at a loss as to why "Done Too Soon" is not one of them. As a gathering together of all the great songs, it is fine, but I would have preferred fewer live tracks - release the live tracks by all means, but as a live album. This is the main reason for four, rather than five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Duke and Swee'Pea, 4 Jun. 2009
Beautiful disk - especially Lotus Blossom - illustrating the depth of the link between Ellington and his closest collaborator. Never can a single piano have sounded so full and so complete and in the hands of a maestro.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bonzo sampling, 23 April 2009
This review is from: Gorilla (Audio CD)
Another eclectic outing for the Bonzos. I really only bought it for one track - "My Brother Makes the Noises for the Talkies", which I now enjoy as I want. But the other tracks highlight the eclectic nature of the Bonzos' music - e.g. "By a Waterfall" - making them, in their pomp, a modern day Spike Jones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mozart Horn Concertos, 4 Mar. 2009
This review is from: Mozart: Horn Concertos (Audio CD)
This recording is an early one with von Karajan and the Philharmonie. Denis Brain is arguably the finest exponent of these works even given the age of the recordings. They stand up well, as do von Karajan's interpretations. A good addition to any Mozart library.
